View Full Version : Un-useable Runestones

I just bought a book on runes that came with a set of runes. My problem is that the stone's texture is rather rough, somewhat like terracotta, which is a texture I find EXTREMELY disagreeable and I cant hold the stones for more than a few second without having to drop them and hearing the stones scrape together sends convulsions up and down my spine.

Can I get rid of the texture but still keep the stones?

I don't think you can change those stones to a smoother consistancy. Is that what you meant?

Yeah, I just...CANNOT touch things like terracotta or frosted glass, my mind just wont let it happen

then yeah you're going to need a new set. Have you thought of making your own?

Yeah, but I dont have any materials suitable or any money to get them. The thing I bought was on a giftcard I got for graduation

A rune set is very easy to make. I went to Michaels (but any craft store - not the witchcraft kind - will do) and bought a couple packages of little wood rounds. I think it was 7 rounds for a dollar or something. Got myself a couple of those and a fancy silver permenent pen for three dollars or so. The whole thing musta only cost me 6 or 7 dollars and *I* made them. I instilled my own energy into them. And they're smooth, so that's a plus ^__^

mine are terracotta/clay, but they are quite smooth.

I hope to buy a nice quartz or lapis set one day, but that going to be hheavy on the wallet! My current runes work fine, but I just really love the feel of cold stone in my hands.

How about selling the set you have and either making or buying a new one?

You could try coating them with a type of sealant--polyurethane might do the trick?

you could also tumble the runes in a rock tumbler to make them smoother. not too long like a day. The problem is if the runes are painted on it will be removed. if the runes were carved in there ,there shouldn`t be a problem. Also ever think of trading them wth someone else.

Clear nail polish makes a good varnish and is extremely cheap.

Have you got an old broom stick or shovel stick or alike and a sow ? If so, just sow the stick apart in x number of small round wooden circles, and than craft your runes from it.

If you have nothing you could use, go to a hardware store, and ask the buy a cheap wooden broom stick or something and ask the people there if they could sow it apart (cut) in same pieces and the number you need. if they look funny at you, tell them you need them to craft buttons for a folkloristic piece of clothing.

what do you need a store for if you're going to make them out of wood?

eta: by the way, i completely understand your terracotta/frosted glass phobia. :shaker:

I made myself a set out of wood. I went to Walmart and bought a very thick wooden dowel rod, and a cheap wood burning kit. Brought it home cut the dowel rod into pieces. Drew the runes on each piece, first with a pencil, then burned the runes into the wood with the wood burner. Lightly stained, and sealed the wood peices with stain/sealant I already had at home... and TaDa!

I hope to make my own out of tumbled clear quartz someday.

The only broomsticks that Ive been able to find are plastic and hollow

i wouldn't use a broomstick anyway. it's much nicer to use a branch. well, can't you make a little excursion to a nearby wood or rural area at least? in the woods you'll usually find something lying on the ground. i mean, people have dogs where you live, right? where do they take them for walks?

that depends on whether he can drive. people in the endless american suburban sprawl take their dogs for walks on the sidewalk, and carry plastic bags with which to clean up after said dogs. if i recall correctly, he lives in just such a place.

this is a bit of a pickle then, isn't it. well, antoninus, if you're willing to pay the postage, i'll send you a stick. but if you can get someone in the states to send you one, it would be a lot easier and cheaper.

Plastic hollow broomsticks? Try looking for toilet plunger handles. I bought my plunger at WalMart and it came seperated- I had to buy the rubber part seperate from the handle and assemble it when I got home.

I got that same set way back when, and the first thing I did was make my own set out of tumbled beach rocks and blue nail polish. *shrug* Dad had a rock-tumbler, and I already had the nail polish, so...

But you can make them out of all kinds of things. There's the flattened glass marble-y things you can buy at the pet store to put in a goldfish bowl. You could paint the runes on those. There's sculpey clay, that you can make them out of yourself in any color and shape you like and bake to harden.

If it's the Ralph Blum set, though, I'd check up on the runes used before making my own set. I can't say I've ever heard good things about that set...

i didn't know he made a whole new set, i thought he just wrote a book... are they different from the normal runes, then?

banondraig

he includes a highly controversial blank piece, not as an extra, but to be used in readings.

oh, that... yeah. i was just curious cause it sounded like he made up whole new characters. (letters)

my idea of the broomstick derrives from the thought that, thus all pieces would feel/look tzhe same, so one could not draw them by the subcncious wanting a result

i do feel thouhgh that natural branches would be better, less industrial

i am very bad at runes readings, but i have tried reading runes with matches, and it works too. costs like 10 cents

I have it covered :) Luciane was kind enough to exchange a set of runes she had for the ones I cant touch. A beautiful set of wooden runes

okie doke. :woot:

on the topic of squeamy-touchy-weirdness... here's an old post of mine that i just found in a thread that muggy bumped up:

pastels... *goes into uncontrolable spasms of grossed-outness*
no, seriously, i love them, but i hate them. they are really good to work with, and pastel pics can look oh so cool, but i ... can't... touch... them. . they make my toes curl. i know this is weird. i can't help it. my shrink is very intrigued by this. i get this with certain types of bed linen, certain types of drinking glasses, styrofoam and chalk. and pastels.
ah, ye think i'm a right loon now, dontcha?
i had forgotton to mention terracotta, but it's right there on my ickyness list with all the others. :hehehehe:

I wonder why certain people have such an aversion to that type of texture

I made mine out of river stones from Wal-Mart, and painted them on, since I'm not good at carving yet, also you can get a large dowel and cut, carve and paiit them if your good at that sort of thing it only cost a maybe four or five bucks, and you are in cali so you know what i am talking about. Good luck.

I got a set of the clear quartz runestones for $15.00 at Morgan's Cauldron/Hand of Ares II in Philadelphia.

I find that I prefer wood, though. Got a set off ebay for $10.
