I've just seen a tarot deck (The Greenwood Tarot) currently selling on eBay @ £117 :imout: & it got me to thinking. :hmmmmm: How much have people paid for a tarot deck? How much would they be perpared to pay? Is there a limit?

I guess it depends on my finances at the time and how badly I want the deck. I desperately want Ciro Marchetti's Tarot of Dreams, which is reasonably priced at $83 US considering it's a self-published deck (and self-published decks of this quality usually sell for more). At the moment, I can't afford it, though.
I do consider my tarot investments worth it. Each deck I have gives me a new perspective and increases my abilities as a reader. Or maybe that's just my rationale for being a tarotholic.

I'm more likely to pay more money for something that is a collectable, or has historical value. I'm currently on the lookout for antique tarot decks. I'm not as willing to pay lots of money for a brand new deck....I think the most I'd be willing to pay would be $50 canadian.

The Greenwood deck is out of print and VERY hard to find. I was willing to pay over $200, but sanity prevailed. I ended up getting mine from an individual who had two of the deck on hand and only paid $50 and considered myself extremely lucky to get it at that price.

when it comes down to it, it depends on:
1. how long i've wanted it for (i always become 'interested', and wait a while to see if i still want it)
2. do i have the money now?
3. will i need the money later?
I actually went broke about 6 months ago buying a deck for a friend, mostly because I didn't realize that I'd need that money a few days later, but I don't regret buying her the deck, I love her to bits. If it's for me though, I can wait ;)

The most I've ever paid for a deck was somewhere around $30. The deck I use most often, though, was free.

I've seen the Greenwood go as high as $600 (U.S.)
I was lucky, I bought Greenwood while it was still in print. Unfortunately, I never saved the packaging on my new decks at that time, nor the intorductory and credit cards (not that I'd resell it, but I have in more recent years decided it's important for me to have the complete package, etc, since my collecting is academic as much as anything else...
The most I've paid for a deck is $45, that was for a couple of impored decks--my Margerete Petersen and an an Egyptian themed deck fom Bulgaria...thank you TarotGarden.com.
If I had more money available to me...but in terms of books and Tarot I want I want I want, and short of winning the lottery....well...the more expensive ones just don't fall within a student budget (for that matter neither do the less expensive, but oh well....).

These are my favorite decks and when I found out it was out-of-print, I was sad. When I found out the price they were going for surprized, but not shocked, how could this awesome deck go out-of-print so quickly? The artist also has a supplimental handbook for Greenwood on the web which to me is more valuable to the book it was sold with. I have a printed copy of the guide she sent me soon after the deck was published. It's at the Chesca Potter GReenwood Tarot Handbook:http://www.herebedragons.co.uk/chesca/cp/green.htm And if you want a reading on-line: http://www.greenwood-tarot.com/tarot2/ Another Chedsca Deck is also going out-of-print 'The Celtic Sahman's Pack' with Johm Matthews! It's still not too hard to find and it's special in it's own way. the edition will have a different artist. You can see it at aeclectic tarot.

Well, I still haven't sprung for the Tarot of Dreams, lol. I guess if money was a little less tight, I might be willing to go as high as $100 for an OOP deck that I REALLY wanted (maybe the Servants of Light???) :) I know myself though and I'm fickle.
I bought the Norse tarot (oop) and after I got it, didn't care for it. I'd been obsesssing for over a year and then it just wasn't right for me. It's a very pretty deck, but there was no connection.
So, I think I'd need to see ALL the cards in the deck before I can decide if I want to pay an exorbitant amount for it. That way I'll have an idea of whether or not I'll like it before I buy. I'd hate to buy it and then not want it anymore. What a let down!
edited to add: I no longer have the Norse tarot, I sold it a while back. Sorry! :)

I think it would depend how much I wanted it, if I could afford it and whether the money would be better spent on something else. I very recently got the Fey Tarot (they demanded I buy them ). I wanted to buy it but at £24 it was out of my price range :( I know the lady who owns the shop (she buys my jewellery to sell) and she offered a trade :)
Whenever I buy something expensive (we have very limited finances) I try to decide its value to me as well. For example I had to buy new shoes a few weeks ago and bought a pair of £75 doc martin boots. That more money than I pay for a weeks rent! and I really fretted over buying them or not. But as my bf said I am so soft wearing on shoes they will last me years and years and so are worth paying that much for and if you divide the cost over those years it may well even be cheaper to buy the one expensive pair than many cheaper pairs of shoes over that time

It would depend on how long and how much I want the deck. If it's something I have been looking for. And I haven't found it at the price I would like to pay after a year or so (depends on the deck) then I might go for it. Others I am willing to wait for the right price.

I would pay up to 20$ US for a deck, but upwards of that I probably wouldn't. The deck I bought yesterday was around 13$ normally, and with my Borders card (yay for discounts!) I only had to pay around 14$. And yet, I still ended up with only ten dollars at the end of the day because I bought paper stars and a 9-dollar necklace (the sign said it was German-etched crystal; the German part I rather doubt) from the Sanrio store, and chicken fries from Burger King.
What I'm willing to pay for Tarot decks would really depend on if I feel okay with the deck, and if I think I'll actually USE it in the first place.

The most I ever paid was $40 US for the Visconti-Sforsa deck, and that was years ago. I'd go higher if the deck was important to me and I could afford it. My decks are the tools with which I make my living so it's not cost effective to worry too much about the price.
