Here we have a man, obviously upside down, but his clothing isn't askew like it truly would be if he were hanging. There's the T he's tied to, the halo around his head and the relaxed way he's hanging.

I think this card means new ideas, looking at things from a different point of view, changing your mind. I'm sure if he had change in his pockets, it'd be falling out....he'd be letting it fall, just letting go. His demeanor is too relaxed to worry about such trivial matters. I think it also means enlightenment through meditation. He's also sacrificing something of himself also.

Well, that's all I can get from this card for the time being.

On my deck the man is only wearing a small garment over his netherregends. He has a patch over his eye and has his left leg crossed behind his right knee. His hair is falling downward. This card I think makes you think of looking at things differently. From a different point of view. There are also runes at the bottom of the card and an orange sphere at the bottom and a red sphere at the top. He is Odin and he sacrificed his eye for further knowledge. So he is also looking for more knowledge. He put himself there to learn the runes I think. So he could stand for learning in different ways also.

Jazzmine....what a great thought!! Through the Rider Waite, I wouldn't have picked up on that!

Great takes :)

I also get transformation ~ he is prepared to loose everything and let it all hang out and be free to move on.
When this card comes up: a sacrifice has to be made or has been made ~ materially (coins - that are sometimes depicted with this card) or spiritually (his halo).
This sacrifice isnt hard to do, it can be done willingly like him, and once its been made all will be free and transformed!

His crossed legs are in the shape of a figure 4 (the Emperor does the same in some decks (he's the Emperor upside down!)) ~ this stands for Jupiter! king of the Gods who represents luck and opportunities!

I have up till recently been reading reversed and upright but now I'm reading upright only.. but looking to see which ones were originally upright to begin with before I turn them round... confused?
Anyway this card reversed suggests a refusal to sacfirce and learn from lifes wheel. So if I had to turn this upright I would keep it in mind when doing the whole reading...

Hi all!
I see sacrifice.I also see suspension.Things put on hold, until we learn more or decide which way to go with what we know.I see a lack of movement, but not lack of learning more.

I think the fact that he is so comfortable in this awkward position is a triumph over some difficult task. He has been through hell and prevailed over it. I would say it is being happy with where you are and what you are doing in life even if it seems backwards or upside down to others. If you know your path and are in control it doesn't matter about appearances to the outside.

Key words:
ACTIONS

letting go
having an emotional release
accepting what is
surrendering to experience
ending the struggle
being vulnerable and open
giving up control
accepting God's will

reversing
turning the world around
changing your mind
overturning old priorities
seeing from a new angle
upending the old order
doing an about-face

suspending action
pausing to reflect
feeling outside of time
taking time to just be
giving up urgency
living in the moment
waiting for the best opportunity

sacrificing
being a martyr
renouncing a claim
putting self-interest aside
going one step back to go two steps forward
giving up for a higher cause
putting others first

DESCRIPTION

The Hanged Man is one of the most mysterious cards in the tarot deck. It is simple, but complex. It attracts, but also disturbs. It contradicts itself in countless ways. The Hanged Man is unsettling because it symbolizes the action of paradox in our lives. A paradox is something that appears contradictory, and yet is true. The Hanged Man presents to us certain truths, but they are hidden in their opposites.

The main lesson of the Hanged Man is that we "control" by letting go - we "win" by surrendering. The figure on Card 12 has made the ultimate surrender - to die on the cross of his own travails - yet he shines with the glory of divine understanding. He has sacrificed himself, but he emerges the victor. The Hanged Man also tells us that we can "move forward" by standing still. By suspending time, we can have all the time in the world.

In readings, the Hanged Man reminds us that the best approach to a problem is not always the most obvious. When we most want to force our will on someone, that is when we should release. When we most want to have our own way, that is when we should sacrifice. When we most want to act, that is when we should wait. The irony is that by making these contradictory moves, we find what we are looking for.

On my deck's version we have a man in a white tunic and red hose suspended by his left leg which is hooked over a branch. His right leg crosses the left behind the branch securing him. the brach has grown to form and 'H' between 2 tree trunks.

I see the tree trunks as the balance of oppostite forces, equally powerful, and he hangs between them. He is also forming the '4' (albeit backwards and upsidedown on my card) often associated as the symbol of the planet Jupiter.

I'm not real strong in astrological associations yet but as for the rest of the symbology I see: suspension, relying on or having faith in something/one divine, allowing oneself to be vulnerable, looking at or seeing things differently, giving up control, release....

To me it seems this person is sacrificing something to gain understanding or higher insights. Removing what is unneccessary, like trinkets and the trivial objects in his pockets that Dagda mentioned. People tend to stress the trivial and not concentrate on what are really the priorities in life. He hangs upside down in order to find some clarity, letting the junk fall out of his pockets and out of his life.

Just my opinion....but I seem to enjoy seeing this card. It is a reminder of what I need to seek or that maybe I should be seeking a different viewpoint. That my life could be better and that I need to make sure I am still looking to achieve my goals, but maybe there is a better way to accomplish this. Kind of a "Wake Up!" card, it tends to catch me napping once in awhile. ;)

Exactly! Without change, we become dull and stagnant. Sometimes, just investigating a different point of view is change enough! Other times, more drastic tactics must be taken!

I am not studying Tarot, really, but my daughter was given a set (Hanson-Roberts, very sweet and childlike images) and I am letting her study. Today I was thinking about the Hanged Man and seeing it clearly in my mind. There are a lot of things to look at in this card. In the deck I was looking at, he is hanging by his toes- imagine the strength and willpower you'd need to support yourself that way, even for a moment! The numeral four created by his legs- the other thing his crossed legs create is a foursquare cross, the Solar cross. One use of the foursquare cross is to pin something down in its place. I have always seen this card as enlightenment, but today I was seeing it in a new sense- as though, having obtained this magnificent insight, this person is complacently hanging there- and refusing to move on. many books talk about this card in terms of equilibrium- the downside of equilibrium could be stasis. I see that Semele's text talks about this very aspect, and I am glad I dropped in to share my little insight!

I feel that the Hanged Man is trying to let us know that self-sacrifice is not all that difficult and necessary for our personal and community growth.

To me this is the intellect card. It shows man (especially in my right card, the Haindl deck) uniting sky and earth--intellect and pragmatism.

The card on the left, shows man as the mediating force between the dicomities of the world. this is a very strong card for me.

Cheers

Welcome to our tarot lessons Lisa! The cards that we are currently working on are Moon, Sun and Star! You might want to go back through the previous pages and just read the other cards up through the current ones! Jump into any conversations you feel comfortable with!

Xois

I agree! That is why I post mine! Maybe you can see something in another deck that you don't see in your own and you can add that to your interpretation of the card!

Thank You Dagda-

I'll go back to the other cards and combine what I feel about the Sun, Stara, and Moon.

It's so good to be here!

The Sun to me represents the coming together of opposites, where there is no hate, no fear, no anger. Just pure joy! Things are so much better under the influence of the sun.

The Stars is one of my favs. To me she is a represenative from the Pleadies, who brings emotional and physical balance to us.

The is awesome. It calls us to seek our own path by following our intuition. But take care!
