I was doing a reading tonight about a relationship between myself and a member of the opposite sex (lol) and as I looked at the cards, I realized that there are some cards that come up in spreads that you really really wished WEREN'T there! And in opposition to that, there are some spreads that you hope and pray that certain cards DO come up...And so my question to everyone is...

1. What cards would you NOT want to appear in a _________ spread/reading?
a. Relationship
b. Career
c. Inner Self/Personal
d. Financial
e. Any other spread I missed!

2. What cards WOULD you want to appear in a _______ spread/reading?
a. Relationship
b. Career
c. Inner Self/Personal
d. Financial
e. Any other spread I missed!

This is what I think...
...Pretty much I wouldn't mind the 9 OF CUPS or 10 OF CUPS to appear in any reading! The HANGED MAN comes up quite frequently for me, no matter what the spread, and I just get a bad vibe from that card. I got it twice tonight in two seperate readings on two seperate topics... If I was doing a reading about starting a new relationship, Death or the Fool might be good ones to get...but asking how a current relationship is going...those 2 may not be my first choice! For Pregnancy I would like to see the EMPEROR & EMPRESS. I would NOT want to find the ACE OF CUPS paired with a 3, 4, or 5 OF SWORDS. If I was looking to start a new relationship, the ACE of CUPS may be a good choice too...

Anyways, that is just some of what I think...what do you guys think?

Well, I will answer your more specific reading questions later, but once...in one day in I got the Devil, Death and the Tower in two separate readings.....I literally thought about hiding under the bed for a week! Those three cards combined was perhaps the scariest combo i could think of ! Not surprisingly, really, this was right about the time that my house was destroyed by a hurricane and i lost everything I owned except what I evacuated town with.....and had to rebuild my entire life....but, actually, it worked out for the best!

1. What cards would you NOT want to appear in a _________ spread/reading?
a. Relationship i think the one i'm thinking of is 2 of swords... the one where the person is blindfolded, walking a tightrope, with an armful of swords...
b. Career 5 of wands. i never want to feel like i'm all alone at work, or that nobody gets along with me...
c. Inner Self/Personal 9 of swords. its just a card that i don't want to deal with...
d. Financial 4 of pentacles... it has this stingy, miser-like feel... i don't like it...
e. Any other spread I missed! i'm too lazy to think of anything else....

2. What cards WOULD you want to appear in a _______ spread/reading?
a. Relationship 6 of cups. it has this warm nostalgic feeling that i think would be great applied to a relationship.
b. Career 8 of pentacles. the whole "practice makes perfect" thing...
c. Inner Self/Personal strength. in every situation, people will need inner strength to get through, i think its really important.
d. Financial 2 of pentacles, especially if interpreted as money coming from multiple sources... even if it does mean something else, it just seems very positive.
e. Any other spread I missed! again, i'm too lazy to think...

You know, halfway... this was very interesting for me to read. It is so cool to see how others interpret a card and that, even though the card might mean the same thing to everyone, the context of the card can change the meaning entirely. I'm not picking on your interpretations, but these are mine, for the same cards and contexts as some of the ones you used:
1. What cards would you NOT want to appear in a _________ spread/reading?
d. Financial 4 of pentacles... it has this stingy, miser-like feel... i don't like it...
Now, when I see this card I think "investment" instead of "miser". I think this has been a very misunderstood card. Saving your money is NOT a bad thing. So, if I got this card in a financial type reading I would say "Ok, time to invest more in yourself and be careful of your spending."

2. What cards WOULD you want to appear in a _______ spread/reading?
a. Relationship 6 of cups. it has this warm nostalgic feeling that i think would be great applied to a relationship.
Now this is pretty interesting that you get a warm-fuzzy from this card in relationship questions. Often when I've done relationship reading for people, this card means that they are spending too much time thinking about past heartaches or comparing their current loves to their past ones, and they aren't paying enough attention to what the person they are with NOW has to offer.

I love these types of discussions. They just broaden my horizons so much! Thanks for sharing. :)

1. What cards would you NOT want to appear in a _________ spread/reading?
a. Relationship 4 of cups. The card of ennui and anhedonia! No good!
b. Career 8 of wands. Normally a positive card, but in a career-related reading it just screams "overextension."
c. Inner Self/Personal 9 of swords. To be so overwhelmed by your problems that you can't see there may be a way out right in front of you...how depressing.
d. Financial 5 of discs; the ultimate in dejection and hardship. The worst part is, help might be right behind you, and you're just not looking.

2. What cards WOULD you want to appear in a _______ spread/reading?
a. Relationship King of cups. To me, it's tied to emotional maturity and being able to love from a very deep place within
b. Career Believe it or not, the Fool. That sort of exuberant adventure-seeking is what I'm all about in my work life. What new adventure can I find? What new skill can I master? Too bad my job isn't actually like that!
c. Inner Self/Personal Chariot. Balance, forward motion, and - in my deck, anyway - a wee bit of hell-raising.
d. Financial 9 of discs. The "you've worked hard; take a break!" card.

When discussing the meanings of the cards it can be a difficult task. We have so many different decks and definitions and, of course, many perspectives but here is mine:

I feel the Hanged Man is a great card. It's an indication it is time to "view circumstances or situations" from another perspective. I see the leg position in most traditional decks as being in the glyph of Jupiter, which to me indicates an opportunity for expansion. This card also indicates it is time to give up, release, or let go of old patterns or view points that no long serve us in an way, shape, or form.

Ultimately, I don't feel there is any "bad" card that can be turned over or drawn.
Traditionally, the intuitive and learned meanings of the cards are "read" (in other words intuition mixed with the stated meaning of the card). Readings reveal to us opportunities for growth, transformation, expansion and most importantly, what choices are present for us to make. The "astral" is where all of these "thought choices" exist and we draw them down to us at any given "reading" when we use the cards. They evoke response because they bring with them the momentum from the past.

Blessings,
Stephanie

Hmmm. Off the top of my head without thinking about it much...

In a relationship reading I hate to see the Devil...even more than a more obvious card like the 3 of Swords. To me, the 3 of Swords means heartache, but a necessary ending or cutting-off from something that will, in the end, bring clarity. The Devil in a relationship almost always means, to me, that there are addictive tendencies in the relationship or that it's just plain dysfunctional. There's no real up-side to that other than being able to recognize the dysfunction helps a person to concentrate on recovery or moving on.

I haven't given much thought to what cards I wouldn't like to see in a career reading. The 10 of Swords is unwelcome just about anywhere, though. (But I always see an up-side to that card, as well. I see it as a "The worst has happened and now the healing can begin" sort of thing.) For a personal reading I would have to see the 10 of Swords because I think of it as a depression card. I hate the 9 of Swords in that regard, too, because it denotes anxiety, and the 5 of Cups often makes me think of despair and giving up. Financially the 5 of Pentacles is a bad omen, obviously.

My "happy" cards for relationships include the Ace of Cups (stirrings of romance, what fun!) and the 2 of Cups. The 10 of Cups is welcome in a mature relationship, particularly where family is involved. I'm not as keen on The Lovers coming up in a relationship reading because I often see it as a card of temptation and choices. Sometimes it's promising, though. Occasionally I see it as a soul-mate card. For career Ace of Pents and King of Pents bode well. For my inner self/personal I like The Hermit, because I always welcome periods of introspection. There are a lot of others--I can find a positive slant in most of the cards. The Queen of Wands is my significator of sorts, so she always reminds me to use my energy to take charge and make things happen. Financially I like the 9 of Pents and the 9 of Cups--material comforts and satisfaction.

Overall, as long as the Ten of Swords stays away, I'm happy with anything that turns up.

Yep, that's pretty much my take on it, too. I can learn a lot from any reading, and as long as I'm learning and making forward progress, I'm okay. :)

Overall, as long as the Ten of Swords stays away, I'm happy with anything that turns up. :)Hey! What do you have against the 10??? LOL I mean, think about it.... once you've hit rock bottom, the only way to go is up right? So, when I get this one I think, "OK, the worst has happened, now let's climb back up out of the sewer, shall we?"

This is a really hard question to answer for me, I read the cards in those instances normally because I have a question I am struggling to answer myself. I asked the cards the questions knowing full well if negative things are happening so nine times out of ten when 'negative' cvards come up they are a help to me more than a real bad thing. I now know a bit of what is coming, how to prepare for it and in some cases how to avert it.

I see it as a gift, good, bad or otherwise. So I guess in answer to the question there is no card I'd not want to see.

True. But for me, personally, the card usually indicates a period of depression. And since I suffer from chronic depression (just like Dad, and his dad before him), it's something I dread. I guess because, in my case, the climb out of the sewer is extremely difficult and takes a long time. I'm not sure how to find a way to look forward to that. But still, I tell my customers, "Okay, the worst has happened, so it's time to let the healing begin." I don't want to inflict my own negative view of the card onto them.
