I don't know the term at all, but plugged it into the search engine at BeliefNet and got the following, which doesn't answer your question, but at least recognizes the word. Maybe you could find more there? Maybe someone else is familiar with it.

Without looking at anything or researching-I'd say it's any religious or non-religious person/group who believes in a sprit as their higher power.
Just throwing things out there. I don't even know if that makes sense.

;) I believe that spiritism is that of the spirits - entities. Not to be confused with spiritualism - which is a faith. When I can think up a better explanation, I'll post it. I once took a class on this a loooooonnngg time ago!
