The Life Line
The life line has more to do with a persons sense of self, their personality, and their vitality than it does with the length of life. It is the largest and most powerful line on the hand, and represents the foundation, the energy, and the structure out of which this person is made.
The life line is also known as the Vitality Line. In Chinese symbolism it is the major Earth line.
A strong, wide line indicates a person who is able to deal with the troubles that life throws their way, a person who is decisive and full of energy.
A weak line represents a more conservative person, who may not handle conflict, troubles, and illnesses as well as the next person.
This lesson is an in depth study of the life line, some of its meanings, and some of the things you may come across when reading palms.
The life line begins approximately half way between the base of the index finger and the base of the thumb. It travels out and downward towards the wrist, encircling the ball of the thumb.
A "perfect" life line would be long, well defined, and free of any markings.
If the life line is faint and there are no sister lines to support it, this is a sign of weakness, either in energy levels or lifestyles.
You will need to take into account all factors when reading the life line, such as length, quality, and how the person is using their energies, in order to give an accurate reading.
The ability to accurately read palms comes from practice. The more hands you see, the more you will learn.
Three areas of the life line
Determining where in the line a break or other mark is located, may be able to tell you what part of the body will be affected by a particular stressor or change.
Top third represents the head, neck and chest.
Middle third represents the chest, lungs, and heart.
Lower third indicates the intestines and reproductive organs.
The formative years - Birth - Teens
Extends from the beginning of the linfe line to a point directly beneath the Jupiter finger.
Often attaches to the head line in this section, so that they appear as one. This represents the growing mind of a child, and the authoritative influence of a parent or guardian.
A "chain" effect to the line signifies physical or emotional difficulties in childhood.
An island or a cross in this area is indicative of some mystery surrounding the identity of the parents.
Placement of the lifeline
A life line that clings closely to the base of the thumb indicates a person who prefers to stay in a familiar environment, or close to "home base". Also indicates a cautious, sensitive personality who lacks energy and drive.
When the life line reasches out, around the Mount of Venus, it is generally associated with a person who embraces the energy and adventures in life.
If the life line starts high on the hand, closer to the first finger, this represents a person with high levels of ambition. Physically very active, expansive, and not limited in expression.
If the line starts low on the hand, closer to the base of the thumb, this is a person who is less able to easily express themselves. More physical still, they are less artistic and emotional.
"Weak" vs. "Strong"
A weak start effects the whole line. Whether the line grows stronger or stays weak is indicative of the persons ability to recover from setbacks in their life.
Length of the Life Line
The length of the lifeline only partially indicates the length of life. A short life line does not necessarily indicate a short life, just as a long life line does not necessarily indicate a long life.
The strength of the line is a more accurate indicator of the length of the life.
A long, strong line indicates a person who is filled with energy and vitality. A person who is able to overcome obstacles and learn from them.
A short, strong line indicates a person who is physically powerful, and who displays very strong physical characteristics.
A short, weak line indicates a lack of physical energy, and may indicate a shorter life span -especially if there is a lot of furring on the line, and a lot of lines running off of the life line.
The length of life also depends upon how a person uses their energy. A person with a short, weak, life line may live a "normal" length life if they are conservative with their use of energy.
Lines in addition to the Life Line
When a line or lines appear to cross from the life line into the middle/lower part of the palm (Mount of the Moon), this usually indicates that this person will enjoy the thrill of travel. This is also indicative of a restless personality.
A line drooping down from the inside of the lifeline tends to indicate a loss, such as a divorce or death in the family. A traumatic experience.
Very strong lines branching off the life line, towards the palm of the hand, indicates someone who may make big changes in their life, becoming something greater than that from which they came.
Fine lines running off of the Life line show a dispersement of physical energies in a lot of different areas or directions. Idicates a person who has a lack of concentration in their endeavors. A person who is scattered in all directions, and usually results in a nervous or anxious personality.
Striations on the Life Line indicate a lack of energy flow. This symbolizes a constant stopping and starting of energies, and may also indicate difficulties in communitcating and someone who does not feel at ease physcially. Also a possible inidcator of poor resistance to illness, or a person who is slow to recover from illness.
Rising lines from the Life line represent positive and constructive changes, as well as the ability to overcome a current situation. Source of the line in this case is actually the life line itself, and these lines are rising up from the life line.
Often indicates excess energy leaving the life line. May indicate that a person takes up a secondary career or gets involved in schooling or a new field of study. This often indicates a desire to extend life by conscious endeavor - the person is expending a great amount of energy into this new creative drive.
Lines that run parallel to the life line (AKA "Sister Lines") indicate a backup or secondary source of energy is present during this period. Breaks in the life line are often covered by a sister line - this shows inner strength during a time of change or trial. When a sister line is present without a break in the life line, this indicates a time of powerful energy that can be used very constructively.
Lines radiating from within the lifeline, that run from the base of the thumb towards the lifeline are carrying energy to the lifeline. Excessive amounts of lines indicate excessive strain on both physical and mental resources.
Plaiting/Crisscrossing/Braiding - this is often seen at the beginning of the lifeline, and indicates delicacy and vulnerability.
Breaks in the Life Line
A break in the life line does not necessarily indicate death. Other factors in other lines of the hand should be considered when viewing a significant break in the life line. This will be covered further in additional lessons.
Breaks dosignify a significant change in the persons life. A sudden, dramatic change in the quality and/or standard of life.
If the line is weak or broken at the start, this is indicative of a weakness or illness in early childhood.
Breaks where the life line stops and then continues beside or below it strongly, shows major changes in the persons life - the old part ends and the new begins. Such breaks usually indicate a very fundamental change in the persons life, such as a marriage.
If the end of one line and the beginning of the other run parallel to each other, this indicates that good energy resources were or will be available during the change, and that the period of change may occur over a person of several years. This change is fundamental, but does not necessarily represent a terminal condition.
If the life line continues strongly after the break, this signals a positive conclusion to the major change.
If the life line is weak after the break, this indicates that the energy loss from the change are lasting losses. If this is the case, look for strength in other areas that the person can utilize, such as strong mental abilities or emotional energies.
Marks on the Life Line
Islands, dots, stars, bars and crosses in general indicate setbacks to the natural flow of the life force.
Bars are lines that run directly across the life line, and are considered an interruption of the energy of the lifeline. These indicate times of stress and upheaval in the persons life. The degress of stress and upheaval is indicated by the strength of the bar. These lines show that the person is drawing on resources from within the life line, and taking these resources to wherever the bar terminates (such as the Head or Heart line).
A bar that terminates on the Head line shows that the time of stress resulted in a lack of concentration and the resources needed in the mental area.
A bar the runs across the Heart line indicates emotional stress, a lack of emotional support, which results or resulted in emotional upheaval.
Islands represent a division of physical energies. Duality or dual expression, which results in a weakening of the line.
An island is considered a weaking of the line because the energies are split instead of directed into one area.
Islands indicate a period of weakening, but also show that the person gets back on track instead of branching off of their original path.
Islands often indicate a period of nervousness, but may also indicate strong external pressures.
Where an island is located (See 3 areas of the life line) may be able to indicate where in the body the weakness will occur.
Dots are small, often indented marks, that may indicate a temporary illness that is a result of trapped or contained physical energies.
Crosses mark usdden events caused by external forces.
Stars show a complete disruption of energyies, which may be caused by a sudden event or a sudden explosion of energies. The end result is a significan impact on a persons flow and direction.
Absence of a life line
This is a rare, but possible, occurance. Usually present in a person with catatonia, but may represent someone who lives mostly in their mind - cases of extreme introversion.
