I've only been into Wicca/Witchcraft for about 2 or 3 years. I've only looked at the Tarot a few times. About a week ago I was looking through some old drawings that I did when I was about 10 or 11, which is when I wasn't really interested in anything like Witchcraft. Well one drawing looked exactly like the Three of Swords. I just found it kind of odd because I had no use for Tarot back then. I don't know why I would have drawn it. Does anyone know why I might have done so? Can you give me some information on what the card means?
Thanks.

In one word: Heartbreak.

The Three of Swords indicates emotional pain due to a break-up or falling out with a loved one. Not a card I like very much at all.

It's usually represented by a heart pierced by three swords or knives. Is that what you drew?

Yes that is what I drew. The only thing I can think of that was going on at the time was my mom and step dad divorcing. However, that made me pretty happy....
I used to draw tattoos a lot and my friend wanted me to draw a tattoo with her name. I thought I just came up with it and I put a ribbon over the heart that said Courtney, which was her name. Maybe she had bad things going on that I didn't know about....

I personally think of the 3 of swords as the melodrama card. But that may be linked to the way the card looks in the deck I use (http://www.thefool.com/vr/index.asp?viewcard=3s). It seems applicable to those times when you're so overwhelmed by your pain that you can't step back from the situation and evaluate it rationally. The message of the card, for me, is not to make any decisions regarding the situation right now, because when I finally get to a place where I can view it with more emotional distance, it might turn out not to be as bad as I feared (of course, it might turn out to be worse, but then I'd have to deal with that in a different way, too).

When I was doing drawings like that I'm sure I drew TONS of images that were similar to what I'd seen other tattoos looking like. I wouldn't read too much into it. :)

I think we sometimes forget that this is the SWORDS suit and not the CUPS suit. Many of us see this as only an emotional card and do not even try to apply logic to the idea of heartbreak. Thanks for sharing this point of view and giving me a new one! :yourock:

I agree with Lisa, i think a heart with swords through it would make a nifty tattoo, so i guess it works...

depends who you ask, a million ideas about the card and if the meaning works for that person then its fine. my ideas of the 3 of swords is this, 3 = saturn = binah/understanding, swords = air = the mind. when doing readings I see this card as a learning process of dealing with mental trama from a loss of a loved one. the 3 relates to saturn and boundries, limited time with a loved one and learning to get passed the pain.

Something just told me it was strange that as a kid I'd draw that and have it look exactly the way the card looked. At the time I drew it I might have been depressed and not realized it because not too long after I was so depressed I starting cutting myself....

Well I remember drawing a lot of hearts and ribbons and things back then....I just find it odd that the swords were placed exactly like the card and stuff...

Well I suffered a lot of losses in my life...at the time it was the loss of a family...my mom divorced...I was happy about that but then she worked a lot and I didn't see her much...I guess that could be it....

I don't think it likely you had some connection to the tarot, but what you were feeling tapped into the same 'unconscious' imagery that Pamela Coleman Smoth lifted from the Sola Busca.

The heart with three swords is a pretty dramatic depiction of the heart-break, loneliness, loss, and even heart atack and heart surgery. I think it is an image that a child could have produced while expressing innner feelings. Don't waste too much time thinking it is specifically tarot, but more that you tapped into a symbol.

Wow...thanks...that makes a lot of sense...

In the Waite/Rider/Smith deck you notice that the heart is not dripping with blood after having been pierced. Maybe the heart break is only a temporary sitution. Also the storm is also a temporary thing.. the rain storm in the background of the 3 of swords.

I agree with Estelle that you may have tapped into "something"...

All the best,

Rick
