I'm planning on smudging my room in the townhouse I'm moving too in a week or so. We're allowed to burn candles and incense so that's no biggie, but there's an evil smoke detector on the ceiling that I'm afraid of setting it off. I can't turn it off or take out the batteries because it beeps like crazy if I do that.
One idea I've come up with is to cover the smoke alarm with something, like cloth or tape a box over it or something along those lines. Do you think that would work? Any other suggestions?

Wouldn't it die after a bit if you took the batteries out?

Anywho, a fan pointing away from it, maybe....

Nope. Unfortunently all of the smoke detectors are connected in the entire house so if one gets it's batteries taken out they alllll beep, and there's one in every single room. :bangyourh

OMG, I know what you're talking about! My brother sprayed "a little bit" (his words :hmmmmm: ) of that Ax(e) body spay in his room one night and BAM the smoke detector went off. My house has about 11-15 detectors (its a 1 story, 3 bedroom with garage-- we got it covered, lol) each of our rooms has 2 detectors: one battery operated and one that sucks the house energy (the battery one is a backup if the power goes out). Anyway my brother triggered the electric one...and man that thing would NOT shut up! It was maddening...and then it started the one in my room :eyez: ...my mother had to kill it by undoing the wires...so I totally understand your worry.

The only thing I can think of it taking a fan- the larger the better- and use that to keep the smoke away from it. It might also depend on how touchy your's is...mine is fine with incense, I've never smugged tho.
You could try, like you said, putting tape (a kind that can come off easily but still cover) over any holes of it.

Good luck!

cover it with a plastic bag until you're done smudging.

There is a smoke detector just above my altar and a bit to the left of it. It's never gone off unless i'm burning something on the stove in the next room ;) , but I use my smudge stick, incense and candles all the time on my altar and have never set it off. Again, it may depend on the sensitivity of your smoke detector.

I agree with the fan or plastic bag idea if you're worried though.

I had that problem in an apartment. What worked for me is controlling the smoke by burning loose sage on charcoal (instead of a smudge stick) in a mini cauldron I carried from room to room, plus opening the windows.

I also found that sage on charcoal doesn't smoke as much as sage in a bundle. And having all the fans on in the house, and the windows and doors open. Besides, all the ickies are going to run out of the house if you have the windows and doors open! They won't try to hide under beds and behind bookcases that way.

That said, can you toss off the breaker for the duration of your smudging? If the house isn't getting any electric, there shouldn't be a problem with setting off the dector. Of course, there might be a problem with navigation in the dark ;)
