View Full Version : Acquiring runes

Hello all,
I would like to purchase runes, I own tarot decks but find that lately they have been confusing me, although I did a decent reading for myself the other night (remember I'm a beginner to reading tarot).
I would like to purchase runes, would I go about acquiring them like I did my tarot cards, just going to a shop and getting a vibe as well as purchasing the one that suits my needs? I have also been considering purchasing a new tarot deck, is the Rider-Waite the simplest to interpret, or should I just go by my intuition and purchase what I am drawn to?
Thanks in advance!

Ummm... for runes I would suggest makeing your own.
Were you considering getting rune stones? Or rune cards? You can make either.
For rune cards, check out Ralph Blum's book "The Book of Rune Cards".
For rune stones, I would simply suggest finding yourself 24 stones which call to you, and painting the runes in red upon them. You could also make wooden rune stones, and carve each rune into each piece of wood. I would suggest the yew tree for that, or some other tree which calls to you.
Keep your runes in a drawstring pack, or sack.
Meditate on each rune, learn what it has in store for you...
Good luck... :)

Those are great ideas that UnSolon had. I like using both tarot & runes together. There's a thread with some great ideas on making your own runes. I'll see if I can find it. I have 2 sets that I use that I made myself. One is carved from a cherry tree branch and the other is from hazel. I've made sets out of clay that you air dry. You can get that at craft stores.

http://www.pyramidcollection.com has a few for sale, but they're kinda pricey. I've seen some cheaper generic ones at a few book stores.

Great you found the thread Wild! :)
I agree, its so nice and really connects you to your runes if you make them yourself! You can use wood, stones, crystals, glass nugets, anything that you think would fit and suits you!
I also agree that runes and the tarot work really well together so you may find that they open you up more to the tarot as you learn the runes!
(on a tarot side note ~ and same for runes ~ go with your intuition hun (like you already know ;))

If you want to make yourself a wood set, go to your nearest Home Depot-type store & ask for flat furniture plugs (be sure you ask for flat, 'cuz some of them are rounded on one side). They generally come 6 pieces to a package, depending on size (you'll need 24 pieces), & cost $1.50-$3.00/pack. They usually come in birch or oak (both traditional Rune woods). Sculpy (a clay-like material) works really well. It is available at most hobby & craft stores (or Wal-Mart), & costs $1.50-$2.00/pack (you'll need 2 packs; I like to swirl two different colors together, like red & black, etc).

Ya know, I almost forgot the oldest form of Runes. All you need is 9 sticks of approximate equal length. You cast them, & look for the Rune shapes. I use small dowel rods, but soda straws work just as well.

Isnt that called casting the bones? Or am I thinking of something else?

Anything I've ever seen about casting bones was pretty literal in meaning bones... well, except for somewhat more modern reference to throwing dice... tossing certain pig & sheep bones was used for both gaming & divination, as was the use of human finger bones...
