How does one recieve their "magickal name"? Does a high priestess/priest give it? Do you decide it yourself? is it jsut something you discover one day at random?

it really depends on you... i was given my name, but most of the people that i've met have named themselves. it just depends on what you feel is right for you.

It depends.
I assume if you were to be part of a Wiccan coven there might be a {High} Priestess/Priest that would bestow a name upon you after some time.
In the Kemetic Orthodoxy the Nisut (AUS) does the a naming right and you are given a Kemetic name.
So it all depends if you are working in a group/coven setting or on your own.
If you are on your own, like I am, than it can be up to you.
I've changed my magical name many times, it changes as I change, learn and grow.
Some have come in dreams or popped into my head.
Some people pray to their Patrons, meditate etc.
Some simply chose a name that they like.
And of couse there are some that have no magical name at all.

As they've all said, it really depends. IbDjehuty (Djehuty's heart) I would consider as close to a 'true' name as I get, as it was given to me by Djehuty in a dream. The others I chose myself, so I only consider them as more -- it's hard to describe. They're more descriptive names, as they describe my relationship to the Gods, rather than being given to me. Hope that's clear. But, yeah, it all depends.

Mine was one that just came into my head unexpectedly (I was actually in the shower at the time!)
But I'm much happier with it that way than if I'd consciously tried to pick something myself and ended up sounding pretentious.

As others have said, it depends heavily on your path and group's practices.
Some paths, the group leadership gives you one, or one is determined through divination, or something like that.
More commonly, if one is required, it's up to your choice. (In my group, the HPS and HP don't learn it until we show up for initiation.) For us, names are partly about what we want to become: they may change over time, but we're expected to take that seriously (i.e. a change or addition every couple of years as circumstances in our lives shift is one thing, wanting to change every few months is probably a sign to slow down and take time and reflect more before choosing one.)
People use divination, meditation, paying attention to signs and things around them (does a certain color, bird, or animal keep showing up in your life? Are there elements or qualities you particularly want to include? etc.)

My real first name is Morgan and so when I began reading about the preistesses of Avalon, and I studied the character Morgan LeFey, I couldn't imagine choosing anything else! I'd like to think that I am very comparable to her character. And my patron Goddess is the Morrigan. Anyway, I love my magickal name and will probably never change it.

As has been said -- some traditions allow you to pick one, and in others you are given one. In the tradition I follow, we pick ours. My magickal name came to me through much meditation and journaling and research and even some pendulum work.
There are also some traditions where you have a public magickal name and an "inner court" magickal name. Sometimes you pick your public name, but the inner court name is given to you...
Again, totally depends on what you follow.
Look for signs around you. If you're like me, your magickal name will be on the tip of your tongue for the longest time until you find that one thing that just makes everything "click".
Good luck!!

craft names are not random and they are given to you by the gods. unfortunetly I see in modern wicca this idea of just taking a craft name for the sake of having one. too many people forget that a craft name is symbolic of your birth into this path so the name itself should be symbolic and meaningful to you. the best way to get your name is just lots of meditation and let it come to you. when the gods know its time for you to have it then it will come. hell, im sure someone here will make some kind of remark but I never had a craft name for the first few years of practicing wicca. when I did find my craft name i knew it was perfect and that was after years of practicing and meditation.

Hi there (and good question!!!)
(long, but a good post, I think :smileroll )
I, myself, have three names.
1.) my given/birth name from my parents
2.) the name that I use among Pagan friends and in cirlce like this one.
"Star CorLeonis Tigerlily"
That name I gave myself based on a few things.
A.) "Star" was a name that I chose because of a connection between my mother and I. I have a necklace to symbolize that connection that is a star and I never take the thing off.
I know this sounds a bit "out there", but I kinda view my necklace as hercules (was it hercules?) viewed his hair. If you cut it, your power is lost. Well, when I don't wear my necklace, I feel naked and vulnerable, and I realize that its all in my head, but it does affect me.
I chose "Star" when I was just starting out and I still use it today (some 5 or 6 years later).
B.) "CorLeonis" (which should actually be two words: "Cor Leonis") is the brightest star in the Leo Constellation. I'm a leo. It also translates to "Heart of the Lion".
When I hear "Heart of the Lion" I feel that that intells "bravery and courage", "Loyalty", "strength" and so on. All of things which I can see in myself.
I'm very into stars and such (as you can probably already tell), so its fitting.
C.) TigerLily (again, should be 2 words, but I smooshed it together) is my favorite flower.
I love the color, I love its hardyness, I love its ability to just grown almost anywhere. It feels tropical. The color is amazing. And its Earth's gift to us. Its earthly beauty without special effects or make up.
3.) My Third name is one that I share with no one. I use it when I'm doing spell work, I use it during meditation, I use it when I "pray".
The story about how this name came to me though is a good one!
I dreamt it.
It was during a meditation a while back that I was questioning whether or not this was the right path for me. My answer in that meditation was "unequivocally yes", but after that meditation when I went to bed for the night is when the name came to me. There was a gorgeous (naturally...not made up like the cover of vogue) woman that came to me and covered me in white light that was like a blanket right out of the dryer-very comforting and natural, and she kept calling me "a name" as she spoke to me. That name is the name that I took as "my name" and I love it and find it totally fitting.

Actually any search on say Yahoo or Google will come up with ideas, rituals, advice, methods etc of finding Magical names.
Try something like "Magickal name(s)" and add things like: Magickal name --meditation/exercises/rituals/lists
