ok, I searched MW for this and I would think it's already been answered somewhere (maybe I used the wrong keywords  )
ok:
When doing rituals and such do you need magickal tools or is that a more Wiccan approach?
I am not Wiccan and I never had ritual tools.
I admit I have not done that many rituals, but I never felt that I had to have an athame or cauldron, etc. to do one. I usually use whatever works and is around. If I need a chalice-like cup I use one of my colbat blue ones from a wine glass set I got-- things like that. I might also get things from nature-- dirt, grass, sticks, flowers, etc. to use as well. I also rarely cast circles and things like that. From what I've read, it seem to have more to a Witchcraft approach to these things.
So I guess I was wondering who else does not use ritual tools and what path you follow...or you're feelings on using and not using ritual tools.

ritual tools are great, and they are lots of fun, but they are not necessary. All that is necessary is your belief & the intention in your heart & mind.

No matter how elaborate and involved the ritual is, you can do the entire thing completely in your head if you wanted to. Tools are not needed for ritual. However, they are very helpful as focus objects for your concentration or as vessels to contain energy to work with, etc. For example, I can play a sacred drum beat in my head all day, but it's a lot easier if I just use the drum itself.

I'm also not Wiccan. To my own private practice, tools are tools, not crutches! I didn't even aquire my first tool until after three years of practicing Paganism. Now that I'm going on ten years practicing, I have accumulated quite a few tools, and am familiar and comfortable with their use. But I wouldn't freak out if I misplaced them all right before most rituals!

Ritual tools aren't a Wiccan thing. I am Wiccan, and I don't use any tool at all other than myself and the occasionaly candle flame or small crystal for focus. Lots of traditions use ritual tools - Christians have a nice variety (and ooh they're so pretty and ornate), Egyptians used tools in their rituals, as did lots of other ancient cultures.
Tools are certainly not nessesary for ritual, however I have found them to be very useful for setting the right mood, and help me focus and get in the perfect state of mind to effectively preform in Ritual. I have no tools at the momment (lack of space to keep them safe is the main reason), but even with the help of a crystal or candle flame, my mind shifts easier into a higher state, and my focus comes together much more easily.
Personally I feel when I get to a point where I can focus intently without the tools, I probably won't use them nearly as much as I will when I get the space to keep them. But as someone who isn't very good at keeping focus or raising energy with just me and me alone, I think they're quite helpful - and prevent me from getting upset from staying stagnant too long lol.

I think although they are not compulsory that they play a very big part. (by tools i mean specifically things like the athame, chalice, pentacle, quarter cups or cauldron) They store your energy and give your magick more "backbone" if your under the weather but still need to practice. The chalice and athame i find esspecially important because there are a few religious style rituals that are not the same without them. I might only do a half-assed job of something if it's only for me but when it comes to the gods i give the absolute best that i can. I have a special afinity for quarter cups, but i can't exactly pin point why.
Having said that, People who can not work without their tools are at a great disadvantage, imo.

P.S. I'm not wiccan either. I'm a religous witch (ie, I believe witchcraft is a religion/way of life on it's own and not a just practice).

Thanks for clearning that up everyone!
It was something I've been wondering about for a while now.

You're right. By ritual tools I was just thinking the more Wiccan associated ones (altar tools--athame, boline, pentacle, chalice...)
Thanks for answering everyone :)

Just my view on tools, I use simply things that I can use for a... I can't think of the right word, physical? purpose. By that I simply mean using a knife for carving, a chalice if I'm giving up an offering, etc. Just something if I'm using it right then, it doesn't necessarily have any sort of metaphysical purpose.
Anything I use that's ornate or doesn't have a direct physical purpose are items from nature. Rocks, leaves, shells, etc.

Christians also use athame (well ritual knives, and it is uncommon I believe), chalices, etc. Ancient civilizations also did, there are some amazing looking chalices, athames and symbols out there we can still see in museums. :)

something my high priestess taught me that I find very valuable is that you don't need expensive 'tools' you can always use things in nature or just simple items
find a feather for air, a candle for south, a goblet of water or a shell for west, rocks or even just a pile of dirt for north
one year during an earth day cleanup we found something for every direction while picking up garbage... i was even blessed with a full turtle shell that year! and we used all of our items found for the ritual after

Yep, ritual tools are definitely not needed. Mind you I do have a cauldron, and athame, chalice and so on ... but they do serve a purpose when I carry out rituals.
Ofcourse my cauldron is only a small one, and is used to hold larger candles, I don't cook it in.
Also, I didn't aquire them all at once either. It took some time and money to get everything I have now.

I don't think they're needed. They can certainly help, by giving your mind something concrete to work with, but they're not necessary.

I wouldn't agree with that. Some people find that physical items help them achieve another state of consciousness. Never underestimate how powerful items can be. They can be deeply symbolic.
