I'm in my local bookstore browsing the "new age" section (a title I have come to resent, btw) when a teenage girl came along and started browsing beside me. She kept looking over at me, so I asked if I could help her with something (trying my hardest not to use a sarcastic tone). She was startled when I spoke and looked away. She then turned to me and said "Well I noticed the books you were looking at...and I just thought it was weird" "What's weird?" I said. The girl replied "Well...you don't look like a witch...you look like a mom...and I thought witches were supposed to look more Goth, ya know!!!" I couldn't even respond with words...I could not believe what I had just heard...then I just started to laugh...I'm still laughing! :D As I started to get into a conversation with the girl along came my hubby and we had to leave...so I had no time to enlighten the young girl:rolleyes: ;). Have any of you had similar experiences with strangers?

Maybe you should try going back to that book store and clearing up her information about sterotypes, I'm a mom, teen, wife and witch and proud to be all of them!

Yup! Been there, done that, got about a dozen t-shirts to prove it! :D

My usual reply is "I was too lazy to do the full green make up & warts today."

ROFLMAO!! Yep, I hear ya, Wildchild!! And yes I had quite a similar experience about three months ago...oddly enough, in Chapters, a bookstore!! I had asked one of the ladies that worked there about pagan books, and she looked at me, and looked down at my celtic pentacle and sort of shuddered and said "yes, I believe you should look in the New Age and Astrology department"...I thanked her and turned to leave when she cleared her throat and opened her mouth as if to ask me a question. I stood there, and when she did finally speak, the oddest question escaped her lips.

"If you're interested in witchcraft, why aren't you wearing black?"

I thought I was going to pee my pants from trying NOT to laugh. Of course, I set her straight on why witches wear every colour of the rainbow, not just black, and why witches DO wear black on some occasions. She looked a little dubious but I assume she took my little lesson for what it was worth.

sort of. A newbie at Nirvana asked me after buying sunshine incense, "Run out of makeup?"

I was pracitcally bald at the time, with a half inch of hair, and quite odviously NOT a girl, so I guess it was something like her.

I said : "No, i have ....." (edited for the younger veiwers) "so i choose not to wear makeup"

Hehe. People think some strange things ... people seem to think we're all ugly. Well, I'm hot, so there!

Hey Laiste! What book store. I'll come up there & we'll freak 'em all out! Not surprised, since, if anyone cares, I live near where Laiste lives and I know the folk that live around there. Some of them are kind of silly, i'm even related to a few! :p

A couple of weeks back, I went to B&N looking for a book on Pagan parenting. When I asked about it, the gentelmen behind the counter said he could order it. He did & the other clown working with him, said, "Oh Man, that should be an interesting book!" So I looked at him, and said, Of course it is, why else would I be buying the book." DUH!!!!

Okay, Laiste, got the car all set, just tell me what store. I'll grab Chryssi1 on the way & then freak 'em out. heh heh heh.

How do you "look" like a witch?

LOL, I've not had anyone ask me why I wasn't wearing a bunch of make up and black clothes yet.

Anywho, doesn't it make you happy when someone understands? Or at least, when they have a "yay" attitude about it.

For instance, the other day my boyfriend and I were laying around and he was fiddling with my pentangle(very pretty, celtic, BTW :D), and normally when people do that I hear "What's this mean?" or "Isn't this the sign of the devil?" or "Are you a Satanist?", so I was expecting him to say something of the like. Instead he just goes "I didn't know you were Pagan", And I just smiled. I think his mom is Pagan, because when I was in his kitchen, I was standing around with him, and I turned to see this stained class pentangle hanging and I pointed at it with a grin, and he's like "yeah, that's my mom's. Her friend made it for her." It's cool that he's cool with it, unlike my ex...in which i won't get into, lol.

Lol, I dunno? Maybe it involves wearing black robes and green makeup, and warts on the nose, and carrying a broom?

Either that or just being yourself!

Once a person saw me reading a book and said "What...just cause your reading this dumb book you think yur a witch ?" and I said "Yep it's an easy 12 step program. Wana see?" They just gave me a dirty look and called me a smart @ss! I told them that my @ss thanked them for the rare compliment!

LOL, Starlight, you're so silly! :p

Whenever MistOfTheSea and I are in the bookstore looking at Pagan books, we get all kinds of looks, especially from older people. I think a lot of people see Paganism and Wicca as a fad, something that teenagers get into for the satisfaction of being different, of being a rebel...

...boy, could they be any more misinformed...

Ive been told i dont look like a witch, as it turns out, that comment came from a wiccan!

I wear a lot of greens and browns so, I'm in earth tones. But, lots of people wear that, So, I don't look like a witch. Being male helps too. Once, I was wearing my pentangle while looking at the pagan book area, and there was a girl next to me also looking. She looked over at me a little weird, and said "I thought all witches were girls?". I know there are more female witches then males, but some people seem to think it is an all girl thing.

But according to the papers I have seen, two of the above statements are me! You guess which? (pun intended) LOL

People asked me stuff like that..

Mostly i get "what's your religion about"... and thats just too long to get into so i rattle off a few books and websites and give very vague description.

Mostly i get asked if im a lesbian or which do i prefer men or women.. see.. THATS annoying.

*grumble*
heh..

I know what you mean...my boyfriend's parents actually know I'm Wiccan when even my own parents don't know yet! I just met them 2 weeks ago, and we're all sitting around talking when he just tells them. And they were so cool about it! :D I guess my b/f's brother's girlfriend is Wiccan too, so they already know a lot about it. But it does make you feel so comfortable when someone understands where you're coming from and doesn't try to condemn you or anything. :D

My husband and I wear black because it's our favorite color. So far the only people that have ever asked if I'm a witch are my childrens friends. Danu, Myst can my kids see that roll of duct tape I have seen you tossing at each other? I think my kids tell people. I do get some funny looks in my cloak though it's blue so far no one brave enough to ask a thing:(

Hehe, when my brother discovered that the lead singer of Godsmack was Wiccan, he was like 'Man, that's weird. I thought Wiccans were like hippies.'

Funny, I was just telling my parents while we were sitting in Walmart's McDonald's last night eating about how I've never had anyone approach me in a wierd way about being Pagan. Well except the one time in class when my friend asked if my pentacle meant I was a Satanist, so I said nope, then a bunch of us had a chat about Paganism during break. Everyone thought it was pretty cool actually. :)

And as I've mentioned before, a good part of my mom's side of the family is Pagan, my dad's side of the family is Atheist, I was raised Atheist with Christian holidays (ie. we still celebrated Christmas and Easter), and my fiance's family includes a couple Pagans (including two of his sisters), and then almost all our friends are Pagan too. :D

Psst von here's the duct tape :)

Ugh.. I've lived through this for most of my gr. 9 year in High School, just cuz I wear alot of black.. Actually, they were telling me I was a witch, so I just sat there, looked at them and smiled. I still do wear black, mind you, but no one bothers to ask/tell me anymore... I think they got the message.

A friend said to me earlier today "I didn't know you were Jewish" *pointing to my pentacle ring*

I said "I didn't know you couldn't count."

He laughed when he looked at the ring more in depth and said "OH!". I guess thats as good as it gets when you've been out of the broom closet for so long.

ROTFLMAO "OH" I like that. I think they hid the duct tape but if they don't let Naillosotarrain sleep he may go buy one that's not virtual! I am lucky my personal views on religion can be discused without ever actually statin what I am so it's easy to stay in the closet. I think my mother's family would be in shock after all my Uncle is now abidextrus because they thought being left handed was a sign of the devil. Christian they could handle Jewish they would love but Pagan I think I would be tarred and feathered.

My uncle is ambidextrous for the same reason, but I think back then *everyone* thought it was of the devil.. Thankfully times have changed for most people.

Yes I run into this problem alot. Especially when I'm with my daughter. PPL just assume that if your a mom or if you don't dress a certain way...............you can't be a "witch". It really urks me.

Haahaa i had a similar experience, yes and its rather bizzare. I was having a chat with a friend of mine and the topic of Christianity comes up. And I go "yeah I'm christian" and he just gives me this horrified look like I just sprouted a new head and goes "OMG YOU'RE christian" it was the single most disgusted look I'd ever seen in my life. I nearly cried.

People are normally quite suprised that i am a witch! i guess they have this in built image in their heads and i don't fit it because i hardly ever wear black unless wiv neon pink or bright red and well i spose to them i look normal and witches aren't supposed to look like normal people!!

Heh, you know its funny, when I was younger I wore goth ish clothes, alot of pretty skirts and what not, and most of it was black. Back then I didn't really care about spirituality. About the very same time I figured out my spirituality, I stopped caring about what I wore.

In high school this group of guys a few grades below me called me a witch once. Whatever that means?

I can add to my long list of things I'm accused of being "witch and pagan weirdo" to go with being a Jew, a Christian, a Taoist, a Baalist, a Shintoist, a Baptist, a Goth, a Hippy, a Metal-head and a hundred other things. I wear all colors of the rainbow over the course of a year. I also an asked if I'm gay, bi, straight, dating, single, neutered, retarded, insane, an ET, and so being a pagan and a witch is not so bad.
I usually answer after listing all these and more as what I am YES I'm all of these.. how about you?
