So I cleaned out my bookshelves again. Looked through them and pulled out a few books I don’t read anymore and don’t really mind getting rid of.
I have about 28 romance novels.
Yup! Romance novels!
7 paper backs and 21 hard covers.
I’m trying to decided how to do this. Here are my options.
1. Individual auctions for each book. It’s better because people get what they want if they only want a certain book. The problem with that there is a .25 insertion fee for each book. $7 in fees. And I can’t be guaranteed that they’ll all sell.
2. Set up lots of like 3-4 books for a higher price. Less in fees, but they might not sell because they’re higher in price and could be people are only looking for one of the 3 or 4 books in the lot.
3. Sell them each in an ebay store. cost is $15. but they can be up until they sell.
4. Set up an auction for 1, 2, 3, 4+ books with a list of books and the winner get to pick the book(s) they want Lower fees. The auction might be too confusing thus turn people off of the idea.
So? What do you think?

I voted lots of 3-4 books.
Good luck ... thing is, though, that if you're going to buy books anyway, you might be better off trading in for credit at your local book swap.

yeah. But I'm trying to purge more than I buy. Since I'll be moving in a yr and shipping my stuff cross country. Book weight adds up!
Thanks!

I don't know.. I'd bookcross them.. but that's me.. hmm.. I'd go with the lots then... I know that alot of people who do the bookcrossing thing buy books in lots on ebay.. (I'm guilty of it myself.. in my case Scifi.. but.. I'd imagine romance would sell too) Difficult.

Maybe you should do lots by author. If someone happens to like a particular author, they can get a few titles at once and save on shipping. And if the books start off as a quarter each, who cares if you already have one or two of them? If there were a lot for four books by one of my favorite authors, I'd happily throw more than $2 at it even if I owned two already.

You have no clue how many are STAYING!
Before this I sold off about 50 more and donated two 20gallon containers that were filled with them! I've been reading them since I was 14 (11 years) and read about 1 a day. Even not counting the days where I had no $$ that's a LOT of books!
Smut or not I've got a killer vocabulary (can't you tell?? ) and it helped correct my spelling mistakes (something LAUSD could never do)

I love reading the back of them when people buy them at Rainbow. They're so funny, although some of them cross over into just... :bigredblu ... and that's just the back!

well my family seems to think I am one. They're all in shock that I'm parting with any of my books considering how long I've been fighting to keep them. But well time passes, one grows up.
Still love the smut and you know cheesy stuff, but I'm broke and need the cash. Going to school's expensive!

Whenever me and my friends go to bookstores if we run into the romance novels, we have to read the backs of at least 10 in overly dramatic voices to each other. :D

You could always give them to GoodWill. You wouldn't get any money for it, but the money the shop makes from them goes to local hospitals and stuff.

what's bookcross?
bookcrossing
n. the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise.
(added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in August 2004)
It's through a site called bookcrossing, you sign up (it's free), then register your book, it is given a BCID #, you put that into the book (front cover normally) and then release it.. you will get an email when someone journals it.. (the journal rate is still kind of low, but it's becoming more and more well known.. )
I enjoy it.. *shrug*

Well I don't like the 3/4 books idea. I'm the type of person who has come accross ebay auctions where other things are included with the item I want and I've passed them by always. Now since it'll cost $7 for the single sales you might as well just add the extra money and go with a store, that way, eventually, they'll all be sold and hopefully you've made your money back and then some.

I am a romance noval freak or used to be anyway...when i cleaned out my collection and we are talking it started way back in my teens,,,,I ended up with well over 100 novels I know I know shut up...lol....I traded a few in for credit but the majority of them i donated. The local hospitals around me take book donations and so do the smaller libraries. Some of my local charaties also take donatioons for book sales to benefit thier causes.

I'd put them up for Mystic Wicks auction first and see if you get any takers. Hard covers can be started for more than the paper backs. Perhaps the paper backs can be a set as one auction.
Just a suggestion! Good luck!

I'd just forget about the whole auction thing and just go give them to somebody else. Try bookcrossing.com.

If they're in good condition you can sell them on Half.com. That's what I do with books and CDs I'm getting rid of. It's less hassle because I don't have to build an auction page for them or worry about promoting them.
Can you PM me a link to your Ebay store? I'd like to take a look at them. I've been curious about this romance novel thing for a while... I've only read two my entire life but I keep hearing people say how some of them are actually pretty good. And I could use a little romance in my life these days! ;)

I would try MW, then I would do the eBay store for the lower fees and greater profit to you. And if all else fails, I would take them to a local second hand book store. Those crazy romance novels always seem so popular:lol:
And if you can't sell them, you could always drop them off at a local laundrymat! It always seems thats where old romance novels go to die anyway:p

So I cleaned out my bookshelves again. Looked through them and pulled out a few books I don’t read anymore and don’t really mind getting rid of.
So? What do you think?
Don't know if you are able to, but some used book stores will trade those books for other books you may be interested in. Unless you are just looking for the money, this may be a win, win idea. You could get books you haven't read yet and get rid of the ones you are no longer interested in.
I admire you for parting with them in the first place. My SO has sooooo many in storage right now, and we have no room at the house for them. Seems like a waste. Although I do know some will be collector items.
Good Luck!

Thanks! Do you have any recommendations? I guess I'm looking particularly for historical type things? Or just any that you think are particularly good. I know nothing about romance novels.
MoonDust
August 13th, 2005, 12:55 AM
huh.... most of these are contemporary.... depends on what you're into. If you're starting out the really mushy stuff might just give you a toothache and turn you off of them. (I know I've read some uber gooey authors)
**this gets kinda long. I got carried away**
Sandra Brown writes contemporary stuff but she's good. In the beginning she wrote some uber gooey stuff, but I think it was to get her foot in the door. Now that she's better known she write excellent stuff. She writes Romance/Aventure/Mystery. With her I'd recommend: The Switch, The Alibi, Fat Tuesday, uhhh there are more, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head. If you're interested in her give me a tittle and I can tell you if it's mush or something good.
If you want good historical I'd go with Julie Garwood (Not selling any of hers 'cause I refuse to part with any of hers!) For The Roses is a great story. All of her historicals rock. With her it would be like western frontier times (late 1800's?) either set in England or the US.
Jude Deveraux was good back in the day.... she's gotten pretty bad (I think she's out of it now.. not too sure) Her early stuff's really good. Knights in shinning armor kind of stuff. Mainly medieval England some Scotland of that time too. Her Velvet series is good, historical too, starts a whole Montgomery series off. Kinda cheesy. Not too bad.
Johanna Lindsey writes a good historical set in the same times as Julie. Her stories kinda border on smut, but interesting smut. Not too bad... I don't think... Be over 18. Just in case.
Linda Lael Miller's kinda in the same boat as Johanna, great western themed historical.
Iris Johansen writes really good murder mystery/he’s coming to get you kind of romances. Contemporary though.
The grand dame of the romance right now is Nora Roberts. She good. She tends to write her stories in trilogies. Has some great ones dealing with magick in a respectful way. A bit fantastic, but still she treats it well I think. Anything by her is recommended. But I highly recommend the following
-THREE SISTERS TRILOGY (Deals with a legend of three witches who started/founded an island –really kick ass)
Dance Upon the Air (2001),
Heaven and Earth (2001),
Face the Fire (2002)
-KEY TRILOGY (about some trapped demi-goddesses who need to be saved)
Key of Light (2003),
Key of Knowledge (2003) ,
Key of Valor (2004)
THE IRISH TRILOGY (involes a legend with a ghost and The Prince of the Fairies)
Jewels of the Sun(1999),
Tears of the Moon (2000),
Heart of the Sea(2000)
CHESAPEAKE BAY (oh man this one rocks. It’s about these guys who were adopted by this family after living a horrible life of abuse and they have to help raise this little boy who was adopted under the same circumstances)
Sea Swept (1998),
Rising Tides (1998),
Inner Harbor, (1999),
Chesapeake Blue (2003)
THE DONOVAN LEGACY (more witch stuff. Really good)
Captivated (1992),
Entranced (1992), Charmed (1992),
Enchanted (1999)
I’m currently reading through:
In The Garden Trilogy (deals with a haunted house)
Blue Dahlia (2004),
Black Rose (2005),
Red Lily (2005)

I'm not a reader of romance novels, but that list you just gave sounds like something I would read definitly. My idea of romance novels is limited though...Harliquin...my mom used to read those when we were growing up. You wouldn't by chance have those books above and are getting rid of those? :hmmmmm:
