Do you know this symbol?

My friend has symbol given by his mother to hang on his door, and he has no idea what it's for. He described it as a triangle with a sun in the center, with the sunrays crossing over the edge of the triangle. There is another triangle containing the rays that spill over the first one (that contains the sun) except the top ray, which passed through both triangles.

The first thought in my mind of protection, as it brought a picture similar to a ward for the evil eye pendant I've seen.

Has anyone got images of this symbol and information on what it means or is used for?

Well, magickally the triangle is a symbol of manifestation. Ceremonial magickians who are evoking spirits will sometimes use a triangle (placed outside their magick circle) where the spirits will manifest. The triangle is also considered to be a female symbol, representing the generetive force or "the gate through which we all come at birth" (to put it politely).

The sun symbolises prosperity (think sunny days, happy times), wealth, happiness. It's also protective -- many people believe that the sun's rays help cure illness, and will drive away harmful spirits (which tend to lurk in the shadows.)

Putting the sun with strong rays inside a triangle like that is a way of asking the positive sun force to manifest, protecting and blessing the home with prosperity and good health.

What is your friend's ethnic background? Is his mom Italian, Greek, or Portuguese, etc?

He says his mothers background is Chinese.

I showed him the pictures and he says the golden dawn logo is almost perfect, however the beam goes straight though both and the little ones touch the outer triangle (which how it is all connected because there is a gap between the triangles).
