Topless Protesters 'Strip-Tease for Trees'
Updated: Sun, Nov 11 8:34 AM EST

EUREKA, Calif. (Reuters) - Nine bare-breasted women briefly halted
logging work near California's contested Headwaters Forest on Friday
in a protest against what they said was unconscionable logging of
redwood trees.

"These gorgeous young women were belly dancing. One logger actually
got down on his knees and kissed the ground," said Dona Nieto, a
California activist who has staged several "Strip Tease for the
Trees" protests.

Nieto -- a poet who goes by the name "La Tigresa" -- said the protest
interrupted logging work for about two hours at a point known as
the "Hole in the Headwaters," an area of second-growth redwood trees
left out of a 1999 deal between Pacific Lumber Inc. and state and
federal officials aimed at preserving the Headwaters Forest about 250
miles north of San Francisco.

"The protesters, who gathered at around 5 a.m. PST, stripped off
their shirts, sang, chanted and handed out chocolates to surprised
loggers, tying up traffic for about two hours until police arrived to
clear up the scene. There were no arrests.

"The loggers and the cops were absolutely stunned," said Nieto, who
launched her anti-logging protests last year with demonstrations of
what she calls "Goddess-based, nude Buddhist guerrilla poetry" to a
number of timber and logging sites in and around northern California.

Pacific Lumber spokeswoman Mary Bullwinkel said the protest occurred
on a county road, not company property, and quickly dispersed once
police appeared.

"They weren't trespassing; they were on a county road. It didn't
cause too much of a delay," she said.

Friday's action marked the largest environmental strip-tease to date.

One of the protesters, a 22-year-old who gave her name as "Maple,"
said she was surprised at how agreeable the loggers were when
confronted by topless women.

I love it ......... and I wanna do it ...... LOL I wish it had more impact on the actual logging.............

Ya know, I never tried that when I was involved with saving the rainforest. I should've. It probably would've worked, atleast for a little while. ;)

:) Great new take on an older Idea.

Up here on the West Coast B.C. people have been stripping for YEARS! Mind you, not in a strip tease/stop trucks kind of way. Most people still do the "Chain Yourself to a tree", or "Squat in a tree" idea.

However those that do strip usually do it infront of a Camera. Those photos, usually of local celebrities, or just locals, are compiled into a calander, or some other device, and than sold to people around the world. The money is than used to directly BUY old growth forest and save it from logging. A pretty good way to do it in my mind. Here is a link to a site talking about those calanders:

Hey UnSolon, my Rainforest group used to work with the Valhalla Wilderness Society up there in BC. The group is defunct now, but i still do bits and pieces here and there. We had a benefit concert a few years ago, all the money we made, we sent up to VWS to help continue the battles up there. I was even on cable TV once talking about it. But alas, real life got in the way, now my role is limited these days.

Lot's of people don't realize that BC has a "rainforest" because they think Rainforest--tropical, not temperate. BC is on my vacation "to do" list. One day, I will make it up there. *sigh*

LdyStarlight...

Nice to hear :) Thats really cool.

And YEP, BC, sure does have a Rainforest.
Infact, where I was living this summer, Tofino, and actually most of the entire West coast is Rainforest. One of the most active groups still around the area, or atleast in Tofino, is the "Friends of Clayquote Sound" group. They were a cherity, but they got their status revoked when they held a Protestor training camp, ie: how to squate in a tree, or build a road block. But hey. Their still fighting.

Tofino is in the middle of the LARGEST Temperet Rainforest left on Vancouver Island (Van Isle has been 75% clearcut & it's the largest island on the west coast of North America)! Clayoquot Sound. It is absolutely BEUTIFUL. I worked there during the summer, and it was funny seeing all the US tourists Sit and gawk at all the bald eagles flying about. I went on one tourist boat ride, and we stopped every few minutes so that they could snap a picture of a nest or one of the birds. Where I grew up, overlooking a large untouched valley, and still live, you can look up on many a day and see 5 different eagles soaring above. It is an amazing site.

Peace

Too bad in Ontario it wouldn't work....going topless is legal here...so it's not much of a protest...
