Well it depends on the spell, and what do you mean "good vs bad"? And what are you asking about being the same? The intent is different; do you mean is writing one done the same way? And why do you add "not that I'm going to make one" - if not, why are you asking?

"Dark" is a word that has many shades of meaning.
Some people see things in terms of dualism - good vs bad; right vs wrong... two opposites always warring with each other for 'control".
Others see the world in terms of polarity - in the way that a magnet has two opposite poles that are neither "good" nor "bad".. just opposite, but also dependent on each other for existance... like the yin/yang symbol.
Things generally have the potential for both "good" and "bad"... like fire. It depends on how it is used.
So i don't see things in terms of dark vs light with dark being bad and light beign good. We need both the day and the night. Dark can be the creative chaos of the womb from which new life is born.Dark can be the sheltering cave. Or it can be a howling lostness.
Samhain is a time of dark... but of mysterious dark... of not being quite able to see.. but almost seeing as through a black veil....
But i do know there are entities and energies out there that do not wish us well... that just feel very wrong. That is one of the reasons it is very important to ask the four directions for protection when casting a Circle. It's important to keep those energies out.
So if you are wondering about "dark spells", you should be clear in your own mind whether by "dark" you mean sending out energy patterns that are intended to do harm. i truly do believe that if a person goes mucking about taking perfectly good energy and bending it into something that is intended to do harm, that they harm themselves many mnay times more then the harm they intend. Maybe that is the source of the energies and entities that feel"wrong" and 'scary".... something that could have been creative and beautiful that chose to create harm and must live out the harmful energy created.
And i truly have no idea why anyone would want to muck about with that sort of stuff. Life can be hard enough just as it is. bb talamh

Just to make it clear so that I make my point, WaterRaven, you have made a statement saying that you will not do any dark spells creation so I trust you not to.
Usually in a "dark spell" has different materials needed, but just like a "light spell" you only need yourself do them. A "dark spell" just has different intent and usually a different goal to reach.

Well there are already discussions on the difference between good and evil or what evil is in Theology & Philosophy. So if we want to discuss that, it's there. However, my thoughts are, as usual, your magick is your business and if you want to do dark magick that is yours to deal with. Don't listen to anyone who feels the need to impose their morals on you.

Well, I will probably have to mosey over to philosophy then because I want to know where people are coming from here. I must say that I find it odd that someone could think a 'dark' spell as meaning bad! And what is bad, really? I dont know if anyone can or should answer this question without knowing WaterRaven's personal definition of 'dark' magick.

Nope. Nothing special needed. Just a different intent and different correspondences :)

I agree with Myst, there are no 'dark spells' as far as I'm concerned it's all about intent. I also agree that it's your own business and in my opinion your own Karma.

Just a quick note: Sometimes using 'dark' to denote evil is considered racist, or so I've heard.
