View Full Version : Herbal storage jars?

Does anybody have a source for herbal storage jars? I've looked around, and seem to find two things - bulk containers that are perfect, but way too small (4-9 oz) for 40-60 cents a jar (like these (http://www.specialtybottle.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=18)), or containers that are the right size (12-16 oz), but are sold individually at ~$4-6 each (like the sort you'd buy one at a time in the kitchen department at a department store.)
I'd prefer amber, but I'd settle for clear if I had to. I'd prefer to avoid regular canning jars - I grew up with my grandmother and a shelf full of canning jars has all the wrong associations for me.
I'm wanting to order 40 or so jars, with the option to go back and buy more at some point in the future if I need them.

I just use standard quart sized mason canning jars for storing my herbs; they retail for under ten dollars per case of twelve, and are readily available; I recently purchased a case at walmart for only eight dollars. It's too bad you have bad associations with them; they really are ideal.

That's what I meant by 'regular canning jars'. A shelf covered with Kerr or Ball canning jars brings back all sorts of memories and impressions, both fond and otherwise, of growing up (as my grandmother was a heavy canner), but they aren't related the mental state I want to have when working with herbs, be it for magical or spiritual purposes.

I use the regular mason jars and babyfood jars myself.

I use mason jars, too. The local "Big Lots" carries them really cheap in a variety of sizes, as does my supermarket.
Of course, I can't pass up a good deal when I go to Pier 1 - if they've got some funky bottles cheap, I'll pick some up for "special herbs" ;) And then there's this list of bottle resources that I use (they're for both herbal and oil bottles):

Bail Jars might be something that would interest you. Several of the sites above carry them.

I'm another one that uses mason jars & baby food jars to store dried herbs, but here's an idea I thought I'd share for those who mix and store oils:
At breakfast one day last Spring with my mother (we ate at Cracker Barrel), she happened to order french toast that came with a 2-ounce bottle of syrup....as I watched her pour it on her bread, a little light bulb went off in my head....the bottle was glass, with a resealable cap, and was the perfect size to hold mixed oils! On Friday that week, I hung a notice up in the break room where I work (a manufacturing plant) that asked if anyone ate at Cracker Barrel and got those little syrup bottles and didn't want them, to please leave them in the box that I placed there.....when I came back to work on Monday, I had over 100 of those wonderful little bottles!!! Now, when my supply is running low, I just hang my notice up on the bulletin board! (ask, and ye will receive, lol!)
Plus, I'm also recycling those bottles! :D Maybe someone else can use this idea :)

Thanks to all the dandy links in this thread, I just sent in $130 worth of orders for bottles. Short ones, tall ones, skinny ones.
See how much money you all cost me?
Thanks!

I love going to the Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores around here and also Thrift stores.I have a long time bottle and jar fetish and those places fit my budget and enable me to get different kinds of bottles from cork top to screw on lids and an array of sizes and colors. :drinking:
