As any healer knows, meditation and your level of ability with it is one of the most important tools at your disposal. Your ability to focus your mind on one particular goal and eliminate all other thoughts from your mind is important when you are trying to heal someone. Stray thoughts and feelings can influence the outcome of your healing attempt, therefore, it is always good to clear your mind before attempting any method of healing.
Before meditating, ask yourself these questions:
Is the room that you are doing your meditation in comfortable?
Have you removed all distractions? (Such as a telephone, tv, etc)
Do your clothes feel restrictive?
Are you in the right frame of mind?
Is the position that you have chosen one that will put you to sleep, or will you be able to drift without losing your conscious form of thought?
It is important to be able to relax while meditating - even small, seemingly insignificant, things can easily distract you when you are trying to clear your mind.
Before meditating, choose a focal point, such as one of your crystals, or a picture. Something that is calming for you, and that will be easy for you to focus upon without distracting you from the meditation. (I use a clear quartz, as this represents clarity of mind)
Here is a simple form of meditation to try:
Begin with slow breathing.
(This helps calm your mind, and breathing directly influences the body's nervous system. Poor breathing reduces your oxygen intake and impairs your metabolism.)
Place the tip of your tongue behind your front teeth, and try to keep it there. Exhale fully and audibly through the moth. Close the mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a count of three. Hold that breath to a count of twelve. Exhale through your mouth to a count of six. Repeat.
This breathing exercise is a way of helping you center yourself for meditation. Continuing the breathing throughout your meditation will help you keep your focus.
Your position: The most basic of meditation positions is sitting upright with either your legs crossed "indian-style" or with your knees bent and your feet under your bottom. Your spine should be straight, and your hands should be resting loosely on your knees with the palms facing upward and open.
Visualize a goal in your mind. If you are using the meditation in a practice of healing, focus on your ultimate goal with the healing - making the person better.
Stay focused on this for as long as you need to wrap your mind around your goal, and to keep any and all distractions at bay.
When you are done, imagine yourself as being connected to the Earth... this will help ground you, and bring you back to reality. It may also be helpful to have a glass of water handy - doing something practical and routine is one of the best ways to bring yourself back after a meditation.
Good luck! :)
