View Full Version : Deletion of some smileys
Twig
March 18th, 2001, 10:51 AM
:uzi::shot: My sisters and brothers. Does this bother you as much as me? I have seen these 2 smileys combined for this effect on more than one occasion. i am calling for the deletion of these 2 smileys for one simple reason......that violence is nothing to smile at.
So, lets hear your opinion.
Peace,

There's no need for them. People should be able to pick others that can still get the point.
Off with their heads!

I do not believe in violence for the sake of violence.
However, I have had to use violence to protect
myself.
Violence is a patriarchal mindset.
WARRIOR GODDESSES and WOMEN
As women it is our task to preserve the balance.
Sometimes we can't, but we have to try. The earth,
our mother, is sick and may die because we haven't
tried hard enough. Men rule us because they are
willing to be violent. They are too stupid to realize
that our capacity to be violent exceeds theirs.
Women have to stop being afraid of that potential,
and learn instead to exercise it with wisdom and
justice.
A few good websites to look into.

I really don't see what the big deal is. I think as long as they are used in a humorous fashion, there's nothing wrong with them. I've used them, but not as a threat towards anyone. However, if that were to start happening, then maybe we should reconsider.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.....

I don't have a problem with the smilies in question, providing they're used in humour. Surely we have to balance the dark with the light, and perhaps not take ourselves quite so seriously, all the time.
No, I don't condone violence, I actually abhor it - it frightens me. However, I know I have the predisposition within me, as surely do most people, male or female if they are given the right set of circumstances.

I personally don't see where insulating ourselves in this manner would really help anyone or anything. If you choose to homogenize your lives to such an extent then what occurs when something bursts that artificial bubble that has been created. Ignoring things, looking the other way and burying our heads in the sand has sadly helped cause a great deal of damage, death, and destruction.
Removing the "offending smilies" smacks of censorship and it makes me wonder what kind of thing would be removed next.

Actually, I think this has been very democratic as we all have the chance to vote on the issue.
3-7 right now (No is winning). I don;t think the smiles will be going away.
Though it vexes me a tad to think there have been 99 visits and only 12 votes.
Should we have a "re-count"???

I recently had a discussion about this with another member on a different thread. I voted no, leave them. But the discussion We had DID cause me to re-think my use of them.
While I am not a pacifist, I am against gratutitous violence, and knowing that some folk are offended by the violent smilies will cause me to stop and consider WHY I am using it before I post.
Sometimes, instead of the machine gun, all that's really called for is a :smash: on the noggin.
Oh, and is there any way we could add a "spanking" smiley? Seen and used it on a few other boards...a much more light-hearted way to get the point across sometimes.

October 18th, 2001, 04:43 PM
Spanking?? Oh my. You just might get more then you asked for. It definately means different things to different people.
i am disappointed that the majority of people want to keep the violent smilies but i understand that i must respect the majority decision. i understand the arguement about non-censorship... but the one about it just being a joke really bothers me. Violence is never a joke. Sometimes it becomes necessary to use violence... but it's never a joke.
It's like - a joke about rape can never be funny to me either.
But it still makes me feel sick to my stomach whenever i see the Uzi icon used.... and it causes me to feel not quite as "at home" and friendly here on the Forum... but that's obviously my problem. bb talamh

leave them cos its the members' responsibilities as to how theyre used. so far, any ways ive deen them used in have been humourous and not aimed towards any individuals. this is one of the things that makes mw such a cohesive community, members know their responsibilities and we are given the choice as to how we handle ourselves. from what ive seen of mw so far, its a great place to be and something for everyone to be proud of cos theyve all helped shape it! and all of this has been acheived without any real censorship, so lets not start now, else this bansidhe will be 8O !!! I disagree with censorhip of any kind.
I personally have been a victim (And I so detest referring to myself in that capacity) of numerous hate crimes for most of my life, some verbally violent, and a few physically so.
However, I would not support removing these. To remove them would be to remove freedom of choice, expression, so forth and so on. People 'must' learn to act responsibility and take heed at the consequences that can occur, not be watched over like children without any possibility to make a mistake. Otherwise, they will simply be promoting propoganda without any sure reason on why something 'is' the way it 'is.

Once upon a time I used to use a smilie that had a cigarette. Someone finally asked if I was promoting tobacco use or trying to tell people to use tobacco or some such bullshit. I said I used that smilie because I liked that smiley.
There are actually times when I feel that I should use the uzi and the shot smiley, too!
Get over your self-righteous selves! If you don't like a smilie, don't use it! Don't tell me what I can or cannot do. There is a coffee-drinking smilie- isn't that promoting caffiene use? Caffiene is a drug. Does that smilie then promote drug use? NO! There is a smilie who is stealing a PC! Does that mean we should all steal from someone? NO! GET REAL! http://216.40.249.192/s/contrib/tweetz/bootyshake.gif
Let's see- first we censor what smilies there are, then we censor anyone who says 'christian', then anyone who uses 'Xian', then anyone who has their hair parted on the left, then anyone with a turned-up nose .... soon this place will be gone because it censored itself out of existance!

Okay...I realize the smileys' aren't going anywhere..but.. I just had to say this anyway...
Sure..get rid of the smileys..but..if you do that...let's go through ALL of the forums, and delete every post in which someone mentioned a desire to curse someone, slap someone, run over someone, wring someones neck, dropkick someone, or any other violent terminology. And while we're at it, we'll have to delete every post in which we talk about something we saw on TV about those subjects. And then we'll have to delete every post that talks about an animal getting hit by a car, or getting into a fight, or hunting a smaller creature..
Well..why not? We don't want to advocate violence, do we??????
Comeon, folks. Nobody is looking at these smiley's, and suffering nightmares from them (or if they do, they should maybe get their heads shrunk). No children are looking at those smiley's, and then stealing daddy's gun to go shoot someone up. There are FAR greater battles in life, to end violence, than a couple of silly smiley's on a messageboard..
By the way, JUST out of curiosity, how many of you "Non Violent Smiley" people used or use squirt guns, or engage in "Waterballoon Fights" , watch wrestling, (of any sort), practice martial arts, go to the movie theatre for a Bond Movie, or any of that???????? I'm just wondering, because..uh.. those are just some of the bigger fish you COULD choose to fry, and even they, are thought of as rediculous by many........

I want to thank you all for your voice in this. It's opened my eyes. Perhaps I am a little absorbed in pushing non-violence wherever I can. They smileys ARE all in fun [the cute little critters anyway].
Twig, there's nothing wrong at all with pushing non-violence! I commend you for speaking your mind. I definately see your original point, but I think if it's in good fun it's ok. If used in an inapropriate (think I spelled that wrong) way, then it should be addressed.

Peace,

Leave the smileys. Just because some people combine them is no reason to pull an FCC on all the members here. It's not like the smileys are that graphic anyway.

Why on earth was this thread dredged up? :eyebrow: :goodgrief They're just smilies. What, you want to get rid of the wedgie one too? That smoking satan is a great advocate for children! Smoking AND pixellated cartoonness!
While we're at it, how about the guy violently throwing his computer, the one with the phallic devil tail, the "durr" one, as it indicates someone being stupid, the toothless one, as it is discriminatory against hillbillies, the angry screaming ones, as they encourage violent outbursts, the cheerleader with twig arms, as they encourage anorexia, the man falling off the chair, which children may copy and injure themselves with, the "chill pill", as it may insult those on psychiatric medications, the tomato-heaving one, as it is an abuse of fruit, and the java-swim or coffee ones, as they are obviously an abuse of the drug Caffeine.
Seriously, people. Lighten up. They're pixels. Don't get all FCC, Right-Wing Fundie on me. You're supposed to be over 13 if you join this board, anyway. Or have parental approval. If you're over that age, you should be able to cope with some "violent imagery"...
If uzi pixels are the most violent thing you ever see in your life, I really think you should consider yourselves lucky.

I've had to deal with the same thing... there was that job, there was the sewage job, there was Dead Zone... ah, the life of a contractor.
But I still say keep the smilies. They aren't causing any harm. It's balance - dark and light. Who doesn't enjoy mischievous terror? :deviltail

And lets get rid of that troublesome "search" function. I mean, people are going to get on here at midnight am when no one else is around and be totally bored and go looking for interesting stuff and then . . . and then they'll repsond to it without checking the latest post date or reading the other responses! Anarchy! Chaos! Mayhem!

I've used them to vent, but never towards another member, like, "this is me shooting you". Maybe the bloody head is a little much when used with the uzi, but I really like that uzi packing little fella. I hope we don't get rid of either of them!

I know that there's a lot of folks that have been here awhile, and they may be sick of seeing "old" threads, but isn't it really only old if you've seen it before? And new responses could be pretty interesting... I think it's kind of cool that you can look back and see something interesting that you haven't seen before.
...Of course, I haven't seen a thread 50 times yet, either..._whistle_

It's nice to be able to look back, like in an archive, but maybe 'close' the threads after a year or something?
I've been flummoxed a few times too many by reading an interesting thread and writing a response, only to find that it's been gathering dust for eons until someone went poking around in the back room for something interesting to read. :wtf:

Close a thread because it may be old? No, not at all. After all your input on something is important and may bring another insight to something. It's sometimes a very good thing to set something aside for a while until it's answered. New outlooks are "LIFE" to things like this. Granted the subject matter of the thread may be very dated and the action may or may have not been taken, but that does not make your response any less important.
I think I'll go have a sit on the Porch in my rocking chair and watch the best show ever... "Life." I'll drink some ice tea with lemon while I am watching. :achug:

You have a point, but I still think if a thread has been gathering dust for a couple of years or more it's better to take that new perspective and start a new thread... maybe with a link to the original thread. That way posters don't answer someone who hasn't been around in a long time and wonder why they don't get a reply from that person.
