View Full Version : Creating one's own system of magic...

I was wondering about what you all thought about someone creating their own system of magic. (I'm thinking more ceremonial magic perhaps)...I'm looking at it, but I don't know enough about some systems of magic as to why they associate some things. I know a lot of it can go back to some of the philosophers (ie plato's thoughts on the elements etc), alchemy, and other systems of magic, but I don't know why the shape they have representing water is as such, why they put the elements around the pentagram in the order they did (I can get basic ideas, but not a "real" hard line reason) and also about the drawing of the pentagrams and why they chose a certain direction to start off with each element.
So, I have my own ideas on how the drawing of invoking/banishing pentagrams should be done, the association of elements and their symbols (ones I've "invented") with each a different point of the pentagram, and (in the works) things on hexagrams. I'm pretty much "inventing" my own system. I know this is almost along the lines of Chaos Magic.
I guess my real question(s) are as follows:
Has anyone else done this?
AND
Have you had any results?
Oh, and why you chose not to follow a "classical" interpetation of everything...
EDIT: Plato dealt with the four elements while Pythagoras dealt with the five-fold composition of man and the association of each of the elements with a point, sorry if I gave incorrect info.

Yes I have and still do. I have created many symbols and signs for my own thought of what they should be. I have also changed existing ones when I felt they needed to be changed for me.
I feel that even the original stuff was still created by a person. Their thought, their perspective.
I feel the best is always created with ones own mind. So thats what I do. It new, fresh and unspoiled as in being unused by anyone but me.
The results..excellent!!!!
My SO does the same and I am teaching my kids to do the same...create your own for you....its your mind, your thought, your energy, your power, your will, your creation! :)
This is my opinion, experience, and its right for me!

Oh, one last question. Why are there two different pentagrams for invoking/banishing spirit? I know one is labled active and the other is passive. Would someone explain what context makes spirit active or passive?
Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing a little with me? I don't intend to steal anything from you, just compare notes, so-to-speak.

I cant answer your last question because I honestly dont remember!
I have tried CM in its usual way. I try many things as they are presented. But then I get ideas to create all my own from scratch and as a result I dont remember what the original was all about. I really am deep into individuality and creativity. I believe 1/2 my magick is done through the creating of the ideas and everything else. Acting with the creation is basically just finishing it all!! :)
As for stealing anything...lol..I dont worry about that because I rarely use the same things or processes twice!! :) You can PM me if you want to talk more.

yes I created my own form of magick and it works way better than any other form I have tried.
2 types of pentagrams because invoking is opening the door and banishing is closing the door. But there are many ways to open the spirit world as well.
A classical interpitation? Im not sure what you mean on that.

It's fine to create your own system.
From my understanding that is the essence of Chaos Magick.
I do it, when it suits me.
I take what I need from where ever I find it.
In this sense magick is (to me) a tool to be used.
I use whatever works.
There is no religion or philosophy involved. (unless I want it to be)

creating your own system of magick isnt very easy but the rewards far outweigh
the problems.
all it really takes is time.
my personal system of using magick is through a combination of being a empath
and aura reader,so i dont use any kind of physical ritual at all.

I wrote my own religion, and based upon a couple of hints created my own energy work system. Because of this, it feels true to me. I took things that felt right, sounded right, and with experience, brought the desired effect.
As for the way other people seem to connect all kinds of attributes to all kinds of symbols: it'll mostly remain mystery to me.

I haven't but then i'm new to the whole pagan/magic scene so i haven't really had time but i don't see any reason why you shouldn't since every other system of magic was usally invented so you should and maybe in a thousand years, they'll books on your system and people practicing it :). Also if it works, you should use it.

I understand the concept of invoking and banishing, but what is the difference between passive and active (when invoking/banishing spirit)? Other than that, I'm working on it. It's hard because even I'm not satisfied but I can't get the creative spark like I want. Maybe I should let the divine help me out instead of doing everything on my own all the time. On another note, I f-ed up my nice black-handled dagger today. I'm really pissed and sad. Maybe I'm not supposed to use it or something. Grrr.... I want an awesome knife and I just can't get one. The flea market isn't open and I don't have any scrap metal lying around (that I can think of)...grrr...I'm so sad. Anyways, that's about it. I think I'm going to go cool down and see if I can't go about making my own ritual dagger/dagger of ouch +3.

The basis of any energy work, that’s what I prefer to call magic, is really up to the practitioner’s visualization. My self I don’t have any need for ritual I can just make it happen with out it, this is called Direct energy control, I also tend to adhere energy work to the laws of physics, the main one being energy can neither be created nor destroyed only altered, then apply that to the realization that everything is energy, from a class of soda to a fire. Then for me the trick is if I can use my will to manipulate my body which is energy, to move a glass of soda which is energy what’s to stop me from expanding on that basis.
In other words, sometimes the best path is the one you form your self, traditional. Ritual is a great launching pad but there comes a time when you have to go past it, and venture into the unlimited.
