:bigblue: without riding the bus for an hour plus ONE way!!!!

The route of the bus I ride everyday was extended out to a small shopping center
where K-Mart has been for years, and Walmart just opened a super store--right
beside it.

Today was the first day of the extended route, and I went out there to check it out.
I did manage to restrain myself and spend less than $70 (but just barely), in Walmart.
I have so missed being able to go to Walmart whenever I wanted or needed to do so!!
They always have such neat stuff.

I spent 2 hours wandering around, and had to slap my hands away from any number
of things I have umpteen billions of already (pens, pencils, sticky notes, paper, ets.)

I had a very good time!

How funny! I hate walmart! I avoid going whenever possible. When they started they were proud to offer only or mostly american made products, but in recent years the american made items seem fewer and far between. I also hate needing one or two things and having to walk two football feilds worth of concrete to get them.
I'm not lazy, but I like to go in, get what I want and get out.
We are getting a new super center close to where I work which is a smaller community where many of the small 'mom and pop' stores are still thriving, but will not last long with wal mart around.
I'm happy for you to have shopping close by now, but I won't be rejoicing the store anytime soon.

I know what you mean. Its a 25 mile drive to get to walmart for me...there are no buses in the rural areas. So ya better drive if you want to go to the city.
I would be jumping for joy if it was closer!!
There is a Target, K-mart, Shopko and a Walmart all in the same area. Walmart is deffinately the cheapest. I would be broke if it wasnt for walmart.
I like Walmart cause at least I can afford them!! :)

I hate Walmart.

I was there yesterday because I wasn't driving, so it's not like I could visit the local store and I got screwed so bad. It took me 20 minutes to get outta there because the cashier messed up and didn't know how to manually count change.

Math needs to be reinstated in school. And just because it's a PUBLIC school doesn't mean they're the exception.

Grr... I am stuck in the midst of the HEB monopoly. Yes, I'm thrilled that they are a hometown store, but dammit, I want more options. There is an HEB on every corner and now they're building them on the opposite corners. 250,000 people and only one flavor of grocery stores, something is not right.

Meh! Sorry about the rant, congratulations to you! I can't imagine having to go that far to get to the store.

Shanti, I'm with you about being able to afford them. They also have
almost everything one needs under one roof, so it's nearly a single-stop
shopping.

Paintedlayde, I do find it disconcerting that the smaller stores are closing
because of Walmart. However, their "American made" selling point was
practically guaranteed to be lost because the world is "growing smaller".

And I certainly will not be shopping exclusively at Walmart. They will be
for things I cannot get at Krogers, Valumarket, Family dollar, Dollar
General, and the dollar store, Deals (nothing over a dollar).

I haven't compared prices (there's an idea), but I wouldn't be surprised
to find Walmart a little more expensive on some of the items I can get
at those stores.

One of the tricks that large companies (Walmart in particular) use is that they get their suppliers to provide them with custom-packaged product that is not available anywhere else. For instance, in a typical shampoo that you buy in a regular grocery store it might be in a 13.5 fl. ounces size, and in Walmart that exact same shampoo is in a bottle that gives you either more or less than everywhere else. If you do the math and figure out what the price is in each place per fl. ounce, you'll find that Walmart's price isn't really any cheaper than anywhere else, or is sometimes actually higher than what you pay in another store.

They've done their research and know what things people are "price sensitive" about and do try to make those products appear cheaper at their stores, but for everything else they do what they can to increase their profit (and aren't really any cheaper than anywhere else.) Walmart is a business that works to make profit -- they don't do it by selling products at cost to their customers.

It depends on the stores, and the products your buying. I am one who counts every penny. So I look at the size and price and do all the math and here by me Walmart is much cheaper! K-mart comes in second and Target third and shopko is the most expensive but they have been lowering prices because they were loosing customers.

Plus selection.... Our Target and K-mart and Shopko all have much smaller selections. None of our stores are very big. Its a small city.
Walmart, I can buy everything I need.I cant do that at the other stores.

Our other stores dont have a craft department nor a pet department...well K-mart does...a very, very tiny one, pet section that is. Target just has a few pet things like our local hardware store carries. Walmart is the only one with a complete pet section. Shopko has nothing at all, not even a squeak toy!

Heck I buy material at Walmart of 1 buck a yard! There is absolutely no place else to get it that cheap.

I bought bubble maker guns for the kids:
Target and shopko and kmart had them for 5 bucks. The exact same ones were on sale at walmart for 3.95...it all depends on what your shopping for.

I know my basic weekly stuff is cheaper at Walmart I check pretty regular because my SO hates going to walmart because our walmart is a dirty pit, literally.

Plus our Walmart has the lowest price guarentee...if something is less at another store, locally, walmart pays the differance. I always watch for the chance to collect from walmart..to show they are not the lowest, but here they make sure they are the lowest. I havent been able to prove it wrong yet.

I love WalMart lol. It's got everything I want in there. I am not really into the whole mall or foo- foo type of store thing. The same thing with Longs Drugs..they got just about everything that I want.

I like wondering around in there too even if I am not going to buy a whole bunch of stuff.
