Oh man, I have been HORRIBLY misinformed then. I was told that pentacle was the 5 pointed star in a circle not inverted. and a pentagram was the inverted. <----Doofus:D

well Mist, the way I stated is the way I have always been told is correct. I will look in some of my books later and tell you what they state if you would like. Let me know either way.

Well here's the fun part sparky pants - I've been told both of those, AND that a pentagram is a 2d 5pointed star and a pentacle is a physical one. *so* the answer is up to the practioner :)

Yet another version: The pentagram is the design itself, the five pointed star with the circle. The pentacle is a physical object bearing that design. And Pentangle is a folk-rock group.

Ahh ... i've heard 2d vs 3d and w/ vs. w/o the circle, but never the thing you said mist!

I was wondering about the pentangle thing ... i figaured it was a Celtic pentacle or something ... but someone said they were wearing a pentangle, so how could it be a folk group?

ok, this is what I know...a pentacle is the thing that you have on your altar to represent earth, which is inscribed with symbols, most often the pentaGRAM. I think. Or is it the other way around?

According to dictionary.com, this is what it said about all of them:

1) pentangle \Pen"tan`gle\, n. [Penta- + angle.] A pentagon. [R.] --Sir T. Browne.

(Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, © 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc.)

2) pen·ta·cle (pnt-kl)
n.
A five-pointed star, often held to have magical or mystical significance, formed by five straight lines connecting the vertices of a pentagon and enclosing another pentagon in the completed figure. Also called pentagram.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Medieval Latin *pentculum : Greek penta-, penta- + Latin -culum, diminutive suff.]

pen·ta·gram (pnt-grm)
n.
See pentacle.

Well, I had a college professor (at the University of Oklahoma ) with a PhD (Piled higher and Deeper) ask me if I was Jewish because he thought I was wearing a Star of David.

I just shook my headand walked away to avoid saying something really nasty. I later told him that it was not a Star of David, he still didn't know what it was.

I think this paragraph on the web link Myst provided is the most concise definition and explanation I've read to date on the Pentagram/Pentacle debate.

Technically, a pentagram is a five-sided figure and a pentacle is a five-pointed star. The older word 'pentacle' has been replaced over time by the less precise 'pentagram.' Today, the pentacle refers to an engraved copper disk engraved with a pentagram used by Witches to represent the element earth in the magick circle; this follows Eliphas Levi's original illustration of the tarot suit of coins, which he called pentacles, as coins engraved with pentagrams.

I've always used the Pentagram = house or home-base shape, Pentacle = 5-pointed star within a circle.

I was taught that what is put on the alter is a Panticle, a Pentagram is a five pointed star*with or without circle*, and a Pentacle is the star in a circle that may have any use.. except for the one used on the alter.
