I was quite shocked when I learned you could do this! I know that nothing is 'private' on the internet but this is ridiculous..... You would think they would have people's safety in their minds and implement stuff to stop this!

Google.com has implemented a new feature where you can enter someone's telephone number into the search bar and you will be given the person’s name, telephone number and a detailed map to their house.

The danger is obvious. Now, anyone who gets your telephone number has ACCESS TO WHERE YOU LIVE!

We tried it…IT WORKS. Everyone should be aware of this!

To see if your phone number is mapped, go to:

http://www.google.com/

● Type your telephone number (i.e. 555-555-1212) in the search bar. Click on
“Google search.” Your phone number AND ADDRESS should appear.

● Click on the “Map Quest” or “Yahoo! Maps” link and, it will map out the address to the phone number you entered.

HOW TO BLOCK GOOGLE. COM

To BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, click on the telephone icon next to your phone number. If that doesn't work, click on “phone book results” for the telephone number you entered, then click “phone book removal form.” Fill out the form, select “privacy concerns,” and click “send.” Removal takes about 48 hours.

Even if your phone number is not listed in the phone book it is still a good idea to check on Google.

Please feel free to forward this information to friends and family.

I don't see the problem with it. If you submitted your name, phone, and address to a phonebook company it will be on internet as well. Don't want your name and number online? Don't put it in the phonebooks.
There are MAAANY more sites that provide such information.
www.altavista.com (www.altavista.com) has a people finder
http://whowhere.lycos.net (http://whowhere.lycos.net)
www.ussearch.com (www.ussearch.com)

So not cool. That's wrong of google, they don't have permission from people to do that. Mine is on there but with the wrong name, the person who lived here before.

If your name is in the phone book...they have the right.

Thats why phone companies give you the option of buying non-published/unlisted.

You give up your right to privacy when you allow the phone company your with to publish your number.

It works in Canada, too. My old phone number comes, but I don't live there anymore, so it doesn't worry me.

My sister scared me one day by sending me an email with a satellite picture of my house from an email address I didn't recognize.

Kind of creepy, but I don't get bent out of shape, my number's listed, as is my address, if someone is going to find me, they'll find me.

It apparently hasn't been updated in a LOOOOOONG time. I plugged in my phone number and I came up with the address and the name of the person who had the number before, and a totally different address.

I don't see what the big deal is. If you're in the phone book, anybody can go to yellow pages.com or actually look it up in the phone book to get your information. Google is simply making thier site one stop shopping.

Seriously, if you think it's "wrong" for people to be able to look up your address and phone number, then don't be listed in the phone book.

Don't let Google have all the blame. What about whitepages.com or zabasearch.com? I've found info for lots of people that way. Heck, there used to be a site specifically for looking up Alberta phone numbers that I used to find a friend's number.

I am glad of those search services it is how I found some friends I had lost and my cousin which allowed me to contact my grandfather when my grandmother died. Those who say if you don't like it have your number unlisted are right.

I see no problem with it. And it's not new. What do you think mapquest does?

I offer you this link: http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/google.asp (http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/google.asp)

If you look someone up and they have a listed phone number, there you are. Thanks to Google I've found lots of old friends that I'd lost touch with so I'm pretty happy that it's there.

Besides, other search engines and people search sites have that kind of info....it's just the way of the 'net.

All that's come up is my dad's work information (and he works at home). Considering this was on the Net before... well... um... no map shows up! I think...

I have been aware of this danger for a while and don't have a land line in my home. I work as a dancer and it isn't uncommon for a girl to sift through your stuff or "use your cell phone" to get your home line for a price from a customer. That is all they need, 99% of the time your safe with cell phones but even that is becoming dangerous.

There are websites out there that you have to pay X amount to get all kinds of information about a person. DANGEROUS. Watch out giving those cute guys and gals your home line from now on :chattin:
