I just got this in my e-mail from CNN.
-- A levee holding back water sustains a two-block wide breach in New Orleans.
Watch CNN or log on to http://CNN.com
The website doesnt have anything up yet!!! The link they have takes you to a page about Mississippi! Guess they are working on getting it up!

Ok last report. The hospital is down town. They said the storm left no standing water in their area. Now with the levee break they have 6 feet of water in 2 hours and its rising at 1 inch every 5 minutes. They ( some authority people) said plans to evacuate the hospital have been put on hold because the water isnt rising to fast!!
I dont get that at all. It will take a lot of time to air lift everyone out. I think they should start now. One inch every 5 minutes sounds fast to me!

Very fast indeed! What in the world are they waiting for?! The water to be inside the hospital, before they evacuate?! Great gods! :goodgrief

Update:
Ok the mayor said the actual break is 200 feet long. 80 percent of the city is underwater.
Thats all the news so far.
I wonder if the pumps are still working or if they are over loading.
This is awful.
And they are still waiting to evacuate the hospital and there are many areas with people they havent been able to reach yet so who knows whats going to happen to the thousands still in the city.
I just cant believe this happened now! Its shocking. I knew it was possible but I didnt think it would really happen.
The lake is empting into the city. The lake is above sea level. Its the second largest saltwater lake in the country.

One inch every five minnutes is quite fast. And depending on the patients, It would take several hours to evacuate an entire hospital of 100 or so patients.
They would have to move very quickly as if ANY water got into the hospital, you risk damaging the emergency generators that keep life support machines and other things going.

the problem with evacuating the hospital is that the only patients left are critically ill
and to try and evacuate them will kill them
but if they dont take them the power will go out
their generators are on the second floor and the water is supposed to hit that in a few hours last i heard

they cant see to land the choppers or to take them off for that matter. One of the problems was that the winds were still quite high and it was dangerous to take off..some of the light planes tipped over trying to do so. Tulane had contingency plans for this event, because everyone down there knew they essentially lived in a bowl. Yall are right, it will take a few hours to evacuate the pts, but actually not that long. My facility had to evacuate for a fire and it took relatively little time. The key is light..you have to be able to see and with all the downed power lines and debris, it is more dangerous to try and fly in the dark. Cold comfort, but I know the folks at Tulane are doing all they can. The real problem is people still trapped because they could not afford to evacuate or had no means to do so. Poverty is blistering in the area. You may think you are poor until you see how some of the people live..then you appreciate what little you do have. Please send energy to the man, a Mr. Jackson, whose wife was torn from his grasp when they had sought shelter on the top of their house with their children and grandchildren and the house split apart in the flood waters. Her last words to him were to take care of the children. He has nothing but the children left, and they have not found his wife's body.

My heart is with those poor souls. Many of them probably are still stuck at home or in hotels because they dont have cars or a place to stay out side of the city. I know that there have been come casulties but I hope not many and that the storm doesn't wipe out the entire city leaving nothing for residence to come back to :twitch:

thats very true bridgewitch
but i belong to a critical care discussion group and they have been talking about the need to evacuate the remaining patients from tulane.
i dont think u guys realise just how sick these people are
they are attached to ventilators / drugs keeping them alive
they can not live with out them
you can only take one of these people at a time via a helicopter
they are at a loss as to how they are going to do it

I lived in the panhadle of FL. as a kid so I've been trying to keep track of this storm, and I will admit I'm a weather junkie.
As soon as I got to work this morning I turned on CNN to wacth, some of the things I've seen and heard have just about left me in tears. From the man who lost his wife while he was trying to hold on to her... to the lady that has nothing left but a shoe. These people have been through hurricans beforeto be sure, but I think that this storm was much worse then what they were expecting.

Nagin said that about 80 percent of the city was flooded and that some areas were under 20 feet of water.

It is amazing and scary, yet at the same time, not very surprising. New Orleans is below sea level (if I am not mistaken). I guess dealing with hurricanes and flooding is a chance you take if you live there, like dealing with earthquakes are something you deal with if you live in CA.
I don't mean this to sound heartless; my heart goes out to the people suffering there. I guess I am just surprised at the amount of people that seem thoroughly shocked and surprised....

I guess I am just surprised at the amount of people that seem thoroughly shocked and surprised....NO is below sea level and the water table is very high. The city is crisscrossed with canals and pumping stations to keep the water under control, even a minor thunderstorm can cause problems. The problems now will be to get the pumps back up and working and where to pump the water to. It will be a toxic stew of human waste, chemicals and the Gods know what else and you can't just dump that into the Gulf of Mexico. Maybe this experience will prompt the local, state and federal governments to apply some energy to finding better ways to protect the city and its people.

Maybe people will start to appreciate the miles upon miles of wetlands they destroyed, as wetlands are our natural filters. Not to sound mean, but that would be a plus, not to mention some of the water would have been sucked in like a sponge, if there were still some wetland that is.

I know people knew the risk but hey there are risk everywhere. I have the tornadoes here and last week we had 24 and still its a mess.
We all do the best we can where ever we live.
But when so much happens, over such large areas, its a sobering awakening.
Things happen but know matter what we all are affected and it will take time healing.
I just hope the people directly hurt will find healing. It is devestating. :(

I've been watching the news. Louisiana's governor has ordered the complete mandatory evacuation of New Orleans. As a side note, gasoline prices at some Central Indiana filling stations have risen to nearly $3 a gallon for unleaded. Glad that we filled up yesterday.....

In New Orleans no help was provided to people who wanted to get out but for many reason could not. Many were poor, disabled and elderly.
Even tourist found themselves trapped as they couldnt get a flight out and no rental cars were available!
Plus people do make mistakes. Some people have been fine through hurricanes before. They never knew personally that it could be this bad. Its sometimes hard to imagine the worse when you've never seen it.
And many faired well in New Orleans, until later when the levees broke.
One Alderman in a small city in Mississippi even stayed. He said he made it through the last bad hurricane just fine. (His home is 3 blocks from the beech)He didnt fair to well this time and admitted he was in error. His town is a total loss. He is homeless with his fellow residence.

All the pumps are under water. Some of them are old and don't work. They say that in some parts the water is 20 feet deep. It will take them about 2 years to get all the water out. But they also say if one more storm hits New Orleans is gone. The storm season just started. Which is so not good.

August 30th, 2005, 11:59 PM
The last news was that the pumps have stopped.
The water will rise another 9 ft if they dont find a way to stop it.
It would take months to fix it all and get the water out.

They may have figured they would call after they got out but found out that may not be doable for awhile. It was crazy down there when people were leaving.
You may want to get there names to the red cross so they can put them on the list. That way when people are accounted for your relatives will know your family up here is looking for them. Be patient hon. It may take quite awhile to hear anything.

I've been watching the cable news off and on these last few days. It's amazing the destruction nature can bring! All those people-- I can't even imagine what they are going though. Up here in Washington we don't get anything except for earthquakes.
Last I heard they were saying everyone had to leave New Orleans. But how! And to where?! And that it would take a year to get New Orleans, back to New orleans... where are all the people going to go for a year? And nothing will be left. All those poor pets and the zoos (all those endangered animals!!) I don't even want to think about it.
I do know from what the news keeps saying is that it could have been worse. At the last moment the storm changed direction and that gave New Orleans a "break" on the massive rainfall.
Oh and this made me sad: A cop was shot in the face by a looter! I really sympathize with cops, because it this we right I would be one. Now this cop lost everything just like everyone else, his family could be dead and everything. And this lame ass looter SHOOTS him. A man that would have died to save his life, a man that was doing his job. That really pisses me off. I can understand looting for bottled water food and necessary things...but TVs? Electronics? No way...
Hopefully things will get better down there.

1 million homeless
If the Levee isn't fixed the water can rise 15 more feet...and N. Orleans isalready 80% underwater
It will take years and years and years to get everything fixed.
And something that never occured to me...besides all the toxins, oil and chemicals in the water there is the threat of Misquitoes with all the standing water. The misquitoes will bring West Nile, Typhoid, Milaria perhaps.
The people in the Super dome will be flown to Texas and live in one of their domes
The were tons of premie babies born and they are trying to save them, they were seperated from their mothers and sents somewhere else
In Louisana looting has a max. sentence of 15 years (larceny only 7) and they will porsecute those looting. There is a law or case that says if you are in a disaster or something you can use the defense of survival...but that doesn't apply to TVs, microwaves, and other things.
Um, oh there was a group of dolphins swimming in the waters. The reporter said something about life going on amongst the death and destruction.
They are comparing the damage to cities in Hiroshima.

When other countries have disasters and such the US sends people to help them out. I can't really think of a time we didn't send or do something.
Are other countries even going to lift a finger and help us? I mean England was airplanes to spare I'm sure..? Can't they send supplies? I know we do have allies.
Anyone hear anything about this?
...Ugh. Bush is giving a speech right now.
And is so far just stating the obvious...
Mentioned a task force to corridinate things
"recover will take years"
Three priorities:
1. save lives...I'm waiting for the other two...ok
2. sustain lives- food, shelter, clothes, suplies
3. executing a recover effort- restoring and repairing-- roads and bridges first
Coast Guard recused over 2,000 people today
Trucks are going in with massive amounts of supples-- ice, food, blankets, etc. They are in the millions and pounds. Probably in the tons.
EPA allowing gas production to go on, but not as strict on blends...?
He thanked helpers-- Catholic charities and Salvation Army
It's important to contribute cash is you want to help to a charity of your choice. MAKE SURE you put "For Hurricane Katrina" on it or it will not be used for it!!
Bush is confident things will be back to normal eventually
"May God bless you" he said.
...speech is done.
That was about it. I typed it as he was talking.
Other facts:
Pentagon is launching the biggest rescue in history
27 thousand (I think) are already in shelters
10,000 National Guard troops called up

Yes, and while most efforts are directed at humans, some people choose to help the most helpless, the animals. That's not a bad thing........Don't look down on those called to help them.
Thank you Old Witch.
In times like these the animals are forgotten. They need help to. Ships, Helicopters, trucks and trucks of food and suplies are being sent to help the people. But the animals are just going to starve and die. With no food, supplies and rescue.

For for the zoos I worry because those animals can be the hope for a species.
The baby Rhino at the New Orleans zoo was born after NINE years of trying! To have that all wasted and a healthy, rhino that can be bred later and keep the species alive would be a sad thing to lose.
In the wild species and species and species of animals are dwindeling SOOOOO fast. It's sad.

Thats what I said in my post...its ok to still feel for the animals. I cant turn my heart off of one thing because of another. I hurt for all, animals included.

Today in school my teacher was worried about the people only. I was highly put off for her lack of animal love.

Feeding an animal at the cost of feeding a human in these circumstances is a criminal act.

Whatever.
For people that have pets and love them they are their children. Everyone I know says just that. Sure if I had to chose between a person (say a baby) and a dog, though hard, I would choose a person-- I'm not disputing that, but I would still find a way to help the dog. BUT look at all those stores being looted, there are CANS and CANS for pet food there. Either people are using it as food or it's just sitting there. If I was stranded and saw a dog in need I would do whatever I could to help it, including finding some pet food.
If they were normal circumstances starving an animal is cruelty to animals and a crime. Watch animal planet. Now I know these are desperate times, but still...I guess we're lucky for HSUS and the small organizations that care enough to go out there and save those in need.
I'm tired of people not caring about animals, and I'm tied of people trying to make others that do feel bad or guilty...

Would I feed a complete stranger before I fed one of my animals? No, I wouldn't....I don't have to explain why and I won't argue the point.......My animals come before strangers.........

Let me restate that somewhat....My animals eat animal food which I have stockpiled, If it came down to feeding my animals with people food and sharing that food with babies...I would share my food with all, but my animals would be fed...........Because they are my family......

I totally agree. Some people just don't understand. Which is why there is a seperate thread for the animals effected by Katrina, I guess.
