...both human and animal. Here are three agencies that can use disaster relief donations. Their sites will tell you how to donate/what to give. There are many more that will no doubt spring up to help, but here's a start.

Red Cross.Org (http://www.redcross.org/)
Second Harvest (http://www.secondharvest.com/)
The Humane Society of the US (animal relief) (https://secure.hsus.org/01/donate/?source=gabahk)

9/3: Edit to add:

The Houston SPCA is taking in hundreds of rescued animals and really needs donations:

Thanks for the links! I've been doing my part gathering supplies to send with the pilots here on base and I sent my own pilot husband to help, but I'm all about promoting the big relief organizations as well.

Local vets are already collecting pet care stuff around here. Several churches and other organizations are starting disaster relief localy as well. I won't donate to the Red Cross or United Way due to personal issues but I have no problem working with some of the local groups to gather food/baby supplies/clothing/money.

Whoever you're most comfortable working with--be they national, local level, or whatnot. If you can help, please do. Right now those people are in dire straits (and the animals too). And it's going to get worse before it gets better. *sigh*

As a community we have to help the people that lost their own because of Nature's fury. Please post here if you plan to support and help the thousands by sending food, blankets, and most importantly to them. They need it more than we do right now.

I've already bagged all of my 4 year old son's out grown clothes , the clothes I can't wear since I lost weight, gone through the cabinets for non-perishables. I'm giving an 18 pound bag of dry catfood and to the local vet's pet care drive. There'll be more as the organizations in the area get going. I went through a tornado 20 years ago and we lost everything, so I've been there.

I started thinking about all the poor animals dead and alone and probably dying and I almost started to cry! It's SO sad. I get images of kittens struggling in waters and stariving to death and dogs wimpering. And the zoo-- Does New orleans have one? I hope not! There are so many endangered animals at zoos, sometimes they are the key to keeping a species alive.
I'm going to be depressed now...
I'm sorry that I come off caring only about the animals, but I have a stronger connection to them then people at times. I am sad for all the people and wish that things were not how they were.
I think I might donate to the Humane Society...

They do have a zoo and NOW I am bawling. Look:
http://www.auduboninstitute.org/zoo/tour_rhino.php (http://www.auduboninstitute.org/zoo/tour_rhino.php)
They just had a cute baby rhino and now the baby is probably dead
They have white tigers, elepants, jaguars, gorillas
:wah:

Does anyone know if it they are all dead???????

http://mystfire.net/katforum/index.php (http://mystfire.net/katforum/index.php) is a new forum that launced like... half an hour ago... that seems to be of great logic to me.

It's just folks posting things--offering shelter, help with pets, food, clothing, other resources, networking to find out if loved ones are OK, and trying to get as much news in and out as possible.

Also DON'T FORGET oneof the most valuable orginizations you can donate to is your LOCAL BLOOD BANK. There's going to be a lot of blood needed, now, and six weeks from now, and possibly six months from now.

If you've thought your'e ineligable, check the criteria again. They've been loosened since the last time I checked a couple years ago, so people that thought they were disqualified may not be anymore.

MCC and I are going in to donate tomorrow. :twitch: (ye gods I hate needles. But it seems like the least we can do.)

I don't know about the animals there but there has been a tremendous loss of animal life down there. One of the aquariums is no longer and they showed, well, I won't say what they showed....but I did read a wonderful story that Yasmine Galoran posted in the Energy Thread: Furble Energy about a woman taking in pets that had to be evacuated and I love the story on the news about the two dolphins who were saved with the help of a hotel swimming pool. :)

By the way just to let you all know: I'm going to be starting my own animal fundraiser that I'd hoped to get up here tonight, but by the time I finished finding some graphics, the place was down for maintenance. It'll be another way to get the funds to the animal groups and also to get the message out for the future. And it actually got me thinking of starting my own non-profit, but I'm going to have to do a LOT of research on doing that before I can make it official.

Love and light to all of you!!! :hugz:

I live in the Dallas,Texas area, if anyone knows anybody displaced by Katrina, get in touch with me (private message) or have them get in touch with me, ASAP. I could have a place for a small pagan refugee family (possibly 2) to stay temporarily, until things get sorted out. Being retired, I can also help with local placement of any refugees, through the local gov. agencies and (if pagan) through our local pagan community.

we had no clue this was going to happen.

You give with your heart, too, Shanti. You care so much about the animals and people down there. Sometimes people can't donate material goods, but you care, and that matters. :hugz: You can only do so much, so you do what you can, where you can.

Also, Lowes will match customer donations to the relief fund up to $1,000,000, so if you donate there, they'll put in money too. http://money.cnn.com/services/tickerheadlines/prn/200508291655PR_NEWS_USPR_____CLM073.htm

And, some corporations will match funds too. Ask your employer if they have a program for that.

Here is a program that's based in Pensacola, but they're taking registrations from people all over to match them with refugees:

Operation Open Heart/Open Home
(A program through Cat Country Cares / Cat Country 98.7 FM)
To participate in Operation Open Heart/Open Home click here

Designed to be a clearing house to match those people who are refugees from Hurricane Katrina, "stranded" in Cat Country awaiting news as to when they can go home, and those individuals in our community who are willing to open their homes to families in this time of crisis.

A hotline has been established for both those in need and those willing to give assistance. Joe Rainey, who may be best known for his extensive fundraising efforts including Relay for Life, has volunteered to oversee Operation Open Heart/Open Home. The hotline numbers to register, for either assistance, or help, are *****850-474-8626***** (or 850-474-8718). Diane Hawkins from the American Red Cross will be referring refugees to Operation Open Heart/Open Home as well.

Operation Open Heart/Open Home is only for those willing to offer assistance for no charge. IT IS NOT A MEANS TO PROMOTE RENTAL PROPERTY, HOTELS, OR RESIDENTIAL SALES. Please notify Cat Country 98.7 if you suspect that someone may be using our operation for personal gain or profit. All information given to Operation Open Heart/Open Home will be confidential.

Joe Rainey and Operation Open Heart/Open Home are also seeking volunteers to man phones and assist in the placement process at Operation Open Heart/Open Home. (Same numbers as above)

Cat Country 98.7 will be out and about in high-profile areas of the city (malls, shopping centers, etc.) throughout the rest of the week, taking donations for the American Red Cross. Listen to Cat Country 98.7 for details of locations, dates and times.

Thanks to everyone in the Cat Country Extended Family for your support!

I was able to donate with no problem through PetCo's website, but the Red Cross's site is being hammered. It took me about two hours to get through. The donations, however, have been made.

I encourage all who have the funds to spare to donate to the organization of your choice. If you can't donate stuff, donate your prayers. Bless you all! _pounce_

I agree! I am SO glad the aminals in the zoo didn't die.
But there are other zoos...I'll have to check them too.
But it is still SO sad about the pets.

In case anyone is curious:

In mississippi there are two zoos listed:
one in Hattiesburgm-- which looks to be in the direct path of the damage. There was no info for that zoo.
And another in Jackson. And I don't know about that one either. It's a smaller zoo.

Alabama has more.
Welcome to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo-- it was really damaged by Ivan too....

Spoke with some higher ups in my company today and they gave me the go ahead to get some things rolling to send down needed supplies to the victims.Them telling me yes made my day.I was ready to argue my point but I did not have to.

I heard from my friends down there and they were able to get out. A co worker with whom I am very close has headed down that way he has family there. They have heard from the Aunt and neice and nephew but no one has seen or heard from his mother.I can not say that I blame him for trying to make sure his Mom is ok.I pray that she is found safe and sound.

Thanks for these links, Yasmine. I wasn't aware of Second Harvest but have donated both to them and the Humane Society. I'm off to Lowe's to donate there, as they are matching donations to the Red Cross, up to $1,000,000.

FYI in case anyone is planning to donate to the Red Cross, check with Lowe's or be on the lookout for other companies (e.g. grocery chains) in your area who may be matching donations.

My prayers are with all affected by this disaster.

Ways to Help:

1. The American Red Cross has mounted the largest mobilization of resources in its history for a single natural disaster. As victims of this disaster begin to rebuild their homes and lives, the Red Cross is by their side to provide safe refuge, food, emergency healthcare, mental health counseling and other assistance. Please either click to donate to the Red Cross. If you wish to donate by mail, send your contribution to:

American Red Cross
Disaster Relief
P.O. Box 37243
Washington, DC 20013

To Donate By Phone: Call # (800) HELP-NOW

2. Volunteer with your local Red Cross Chapter.
Red Cross chapters nationwide are always in need of trained volunteers to help serve their communities. For more information on volunteering for this or future disasters, please contact your local Red Cross Chapter which can be located by visiting www.redcross.org/donate/volunteer (www.redcross.org/donate/volunteer) and entering your zip code in the gray Chapter Locator box at the top of the page.

3. Salvation Army
Currently, the Salvation Army is providing relief to residents and first responders in Hattiesburg, Miss., Mobile, Ala., and New Orleans, La. Additional Salvation Army emergency disaster services vehicles (canteens) are staged in surrounding areas and are prepared to be deployed to other affected areas once emergency management officials determine it safe. The Salvation Army is prepared to serve 500,000 meals a day as well as provide emotional and spiritual support to those trying to recover from Katrina’s wrath. Donations may be sent your local Salvation Army earmarked “Disaster Relief,” made online at www.salvationarmyusa.org (www.salvationarmyusa.org) or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

4. Blood Bank
Make an appointment to give blood. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood. Blood used in an emergency needs to be on the shelves before an emergency occurs. Patients in your community cannot afford to wait for blood to be donated, tested and distributed - it must be ready before the need occurs. Blood is a perishable resource and must be replenished through regular donation. Make and keep an appointment today by calling 1-800-GIVE LIFE or visiting www.givelife.org (www.givelife.org) .

5. Federal Emergency Relief Agency (FEMA)
FEMA coordinates Federal response to this disaster. Find out more information at www.fema.gov (www.fema.gov) .

Also, if you are looking to make a donation and work for a larger company..... check with HR to see if they have an employee matching program. This means they will match your donation dollar for dollar. If your company does not offer this ask friends and family too.

If friends and family can gather say $50 and then donate through one guys company who matches.... thats now $100 that is donated. The only down side and it's a small one, is individual donations would not be tax credited except the for the employee himself. But in some situations that is just not important.

Symantec Corp and Allstate Insurance have employee matching programs.

We don't have to ship anything out, yet, though, because I live in San Antionio, Texas and we're already getting victims sent here for shelter and food.

HHonors Point Donation to American Red Cross

Effective September 1, members of the Hilton HHonors guest reward program who wish to contribute to the American Red Cross hurricane relief effort may do so by sending an email to americanredcross@hilton.com or calling their area HHonors Customer Service Center, detailing the number of points to be donated (must be in increments of 10,000; each donation of 10,000 Hilton HHonors points represents a $25 donation to the American Red Cross).

Whole Foods Market is now among the companies that will match in-store customer donations (up to a total of one million dollars). Yay! We're dropping off our money there today--love the company and they can double our donation. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/company/katrina.html

The Fireman in every town around here stood out in the street and collected canned food, water and money yesterday afternoon. I told my hubby that I'd rather give it to the fireman that I do know, instead of calling in a donation to someone that I don't know. I know that my money will get to the people who need it!
I felt bad yesterday cause I didn't donate any food or water so I think that I'll go back to the store today and get some.

Many blessings, energies and prayers to everyone that's in need in The Gulf!!!!
I wish that I could do more!

And remember, my shop: Don't Forget The Pet!!! (http://www.cafepress.com/no4getpet)

ALL profits will go to the Humane Society while the items will help to get the word out!!! :)

Wtchy, I am doing a "fund raiser." A portion (gotta figure how much I can afford- but it will be most likely 50% of all sales) of my Pampered Pooch line will go to one of the Pet Donation Societies- I m looking at HSUS/Petco/United Animal Nations. If you have input onthe best one, let me know.
Also, I am going to link/banner to your cafe press site.

If anyone else has a banner/link that I can add to my website, let me know.

Added a link to the first post in this thread--Houston's SPCA is opening its doors to hundreds of animals rescued from Katrina's waters, and needs help.

I'm wondering how they're responding to the needs of people's regular medication?

Also, I have a friend in need of a laptop. She runs a site for PTSD survivors/abused women. I found one on the net:
http://www.usa-bargain-laptops.com/refurbished_laptop_used_notebook.php?id=173 (http://www.usa-bargain-laptops.com/refurbished_laptop_used_notebook.php?id=173)

a used one but don't know how to tell if it's in good condition or not. Also, I don't know how to send anything to the shelter she's in. Does anyone know how this works?

Got this in my email from a group:
No matter the situation, there are always some people who want to help, but do not want to send money. I have a solution. Tomorrow you are to go out and buy a pack of underwear. Then you mail it to this address:

CLEAN UNDIES (WOMENS, MEN, BOYS, GIRLS) SIZE ___
ASTRODOME
HOUSTON TX 77054

It is very important you to put the size on the outside of the package. It makes it easier to sort upon arrival. And should the Astrodome get too many of one size (this will probably never happen) they can simply forward the package on to another city housing refugees.

Think about if you've ever been camping or if you've ever been in the car all day on a long trip. Now think about these people, none of whom have had a bath since August 28th. It is a 74 hour bus ride to Houston, where they will FINALLY get to shower. Think how GOOD it will feel to put on a CLEAN pair of underwear, if nothing else. You can make this happen.

In the winter my baby scratches ALL the time! She doesn't scratch like that any other season. I think it's dry skin from the gas heat that we have in the house. I've tried everything on her and nothing helps! Sometimes I just wanna cry cause I feel so sorry for her.
I've used medicated shampoo from the vet.,conditioning shampoos,Oatmeal shampoo,Tea Tree shampoos, and Lemongrass shampoos. I have even rubbed Bag Balm on her(which is way too messy).
Do ya think that you have any shampoos that might help with dry skin,or maybe something that you can create?

DISD TO BEGIN TRANSPORTING STUDENTS, PARENTS FROM REUNION ARENA AND THE DALLAS CONVENTION CENTER TUESDAY AT 9 A.M.
Students To Be Enrolled At James, Anderson and Madison Schools In DISD

DALLAS*Superintendent Michael Hinojosa Monday announced the Dallas Independent School District, in a cooperative effort with Dallas County Schools, will begin transporting parents and students who are guests at Reunion Arena and The Dallas Convention Center to one of three campuses beginning Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Parents will have the opportunity to ride the bus to their child’s school, enroll the student, and then be transported to other schools if they have different aged children, and then be transported back to either Reunion Arena or the DCC.

“We want parents and students to know that school begins for these youngsters in the Dallas Independent School District Tuesday morning and we will provide the transportation they need to get these youngsters to school, and back downtown after school lets out,” Hinojosa said. “The important thing is we get these students to school and help them continue their education, while at the same time getting them the specialized services they need.”

Buses will begin picking up students and parents at Reunion Arena at 9 a.m. and then will make a stop at the DCC. From there, the buses will make stops at Daniel “Chappie” James Learning Center (elementary), Pearl C. Anderson Learning Center (middle), and then on to James Madison High School.

The bus stops will be located at the South/Flag Pole entrance of Reunion Arena and at the intersection of Griffin and Memorial (Entrance C) at The Dallas Convention Center.

Parents who need to enroll youngsters at more than one school will be able to do so throughout the day by boarding the buses and going on to the next stops.

Parents also will not be required to immediately prove their children have been provided the proper immunizations, nor will they be required immediately to provide a school uniform for their students. Assistance will be made for uniforms once a youngster is enrolled at a campus in DISD. All three schools identified, including Madison, require student uniforms.

Citizens wishing to contribute a free uniform or make a $25 contribution to the district’s uniform fund, may do so by calling 972-925-5555. The number will be manned until 7 p.m. Monday, and will resume operation from 8-5 p.m. Tuesday. Students in DISD are required to wear a white collared shirt with either khaki, navy blue or black pants or a skirt. Specifics about school uniforms also are available at www.dallasisd.org (www.dallasisd.org) .

pav's note - I freaking loved how they've called them guests and not refugees or evacuees.
