View Full Version : email message from New Orleans doctor

This is in my email box this evening. I can't vouch for it's authenticity, but it sounds quite real. There really is a Ritz Carlton Hotel on Canal Street, just a short distance away from a Walgreens. Could someone with a lap top computer get a message out?

It must be incredibly heartbreaking to wait for help, but with the roads largely destroyed it must be difficult for supplies and such to get there. I know we are busy loading semi trucks with supplies in our area. One of our news stations did a story last night on a man who was asked to come to Kansas City and drive a rescue bus. But it takes time to drive from Kansas to Louisana. I wish I could somehow let the survivors know that help is on the way, and that we DO CARE.

FYI... the following forwarded message is from a physician who used to work in the Wilmington area as a pathologist, but relocated to New Orleans.

Very tough stuff to read...I am pasting it as is from his original message...

Subject: Re: thoughts and prayers

Thanks to all of you who have sent your notes of concern and your
prayers.

I am writing this note on Tuesday at 2PM . I wanted to update all of you as to the situation here. I don't know how much information you are getting but I am certain it is more than we are getting. Be advised that almost everything I am telling you is from direct observation or rumor from reasonable sources. They are allowing limited internet access, so I hope to send this dispatch today.

Personally, my family and I are fine. My family is safe in Jackson, MS, and I am now a temporary resident of the Ritz Carleton Hotel in New Orleans. I figured if it was my time to go, I wanted to go in a place with a good wine list.

In addition, this hotel is in a very old building on Canal Street that could and did sustain little damage. Many of the other hotels sustained significant loss of windows, and we expect that many of the guests may be evacuated here.

Things were obviously bad yesterday, but they are much worse today.

Overnight the water arrived. Now Canal Street (true to its origins) is indeed a canal. The first floor of all downtown buildings is underwater. I have heard that Charity Hospital and Tulane are limited in their ability to care for patients because of water. Ochsner is the only hospital that remains fully functional. However, I spoke with them today and they too are on generator and losing food and water fast. The city now has no clean water, no sewerage system, no electricity, and no real communications.

Bodies are still being recovered floating in the floods. We are worried about a cholera epidemic. Even the police are without effective communications. We have a group of armed police here with us at the hotel that are admirably trying to exert some local law enforcement. This is tough because looting is now rampant.

Most of it is not malicious looting.

These are poor and desperate people with no housing and no medical care and no food or water trying to take care of themselves and their families.

Unfortunately, the people are armed and dangerous. We hear gunshots frequently. Most of Canal street is occupied by armed looters who have a low threshold for discharging their weapons. We hear gunshots frequently.

The looters are using makeshift boats made of pieces of styrofoam to access. We are still waiting for a significant national guard presence.

The health care situation here has dramatically worsened overnight. Many people in the hotel are elderly and small children. Many other guests have unusual diseases. ...not clear ... There are ID physicians in at this hotel attending an HiV confection. We have commandered the world famous French Quarter Bar to turn into an makeshift clinic. There is a team of about 7 doctors and PA and pharmacists. We anticipate that this will be the major medical facility in the central business district and French Quarter.

Our biggest adventure today was raiding the Walgreens on Canal under police escort. The pharmacy was dark and full of water. We basically scooped the entire drug sets into gargace bags and removed them. All under police escort. The looters had to be held back at gun point. After a dose of prophylactic Cipro I hope to be fine.

In all we are faring well. ... will start admitting patients today. Many will be from the hotel, but many with not. We are anticipating to dealing with multiple medical problems, medications and and acute injuries. Infection and perhaps even cholera are anticipated major problems. Food and water shortages are iminent.

The biggest question to all of us is where is the national guard. We hear jet fignters and helicopters, but no real armed presence, and hence the rampant looting. There is no Red Cross and no salvation army.

In a sort of cliché way, this is an edifying experience. One is rapidly focused away from the transient and material to the bare necessities of life.

It has been challenging to me to learn how to be a primary care phyisican. We are under martial law so return to our homes is impossible.

I don't know how long it will be and this is my greatest fear. Despite it all, this is a soul edifying experience. The greatest pain is to think about the loss. And how long the rebuid will. And the horror of so many dead people .

PLEASE SEND THIS DISPATCH TO ALL YOU THINk MAY BE INTERSTED IN A DISPATCH From the front. I will send more according to your interest. Hopefully their collective prayers will be answered. By the way suture packs, sterile gloves and stethoscopes will be needed as the Ritz turns into a MASH

Hi Lunacie,

This may be true. I checked on www.snopes.com (www.snopes.com) and could not find it. The information matches alot of the reports we've been receiving. The only thing that may be is questionable is that he was able to get a message out...my understanding is there is no power, no phone, etc (satellite? with the generator). It is an incredible story...and even if this particular story is real...it is very accurate as to the reports we have received.

My friends mom and sister are missing...they were in Gulfport, Miss. They have not been heard from since Sunday night. I feel for anyone that is 'waiting' for news...it will take a while as survival is the first priority.

Thank you for sharing that email.

Blessings,
Briana

My co worker got a call from the RED CROSS today. They found his Mother(who is elderly)and she seems to be safe and sound for the most part. Everyone shed a sigh of relief as work literally stopped when the call came in. I have heard from my friends who lived in NO.They made it to a town close to Texas border and are staying with relatives atm.I sincerly hope that others hear some good news soon too.Hearing from them and getting a contact addy or number helps us to help our own as well as donating to the various charities that have gotten involved.

Oh that is so awesome! She must be SO relieved! And I'm glad to hear you have hear heard from your relatives. This is such a tough time. I wish there was more I could do...I live in N. California--I tried during the tsumani to see if there was any local volunteer work...but there was none. I did make a donation to the Red Cross; the company I work for is matching our donations.

Many Blessings,

I didn't bother to check Snopes, it takes time for them to check things like this out and put up a report. Too soon I think to know if this is on the up-and-up. I couldn't find a doctor by that name using MSN search or Google search, but that isn't proof either.

I went ahead and posted the message because I think it does accurately portray what's happening there. I know there are people who are helping others. Local police have sent their families to safety but stayed behind and are going on very little sleep and probably not enough food or water themselves. Some people are going around on foot helping the elderly and the disabled to get to places where they can hopefully get transported out of the city.

I heard last night that someone from Florida (I think) had brought in a dozen of the hover boats that they use in swamps and had brought gasoline for them to use in the search and rescue effort, but had not been given permission to put them to use. I know that there is chaos and pandemonium and panic in many areas, but geeze, if people want to help just let them help. There is no way to coordinate all the efforts, just - no - way. This is too big an area and too big a disaster.

I'm used to seeing video from foreign countries where the people start walking when they need help, when they need to find a safer place. Are there any people walking out of New Orleans? Where can they go? Did the devastation extend so far that it would take weeks of walking to reach help?

It is heartbreaking to sit and watch the video coming from these areas and not be able to do anything physical to help. Tonight a group of people is going to send concerted energy through a Yahoo Katrina group. Tomorrow night our drum circle will be drumming and I will suggest sending that energy as well.

Yes, survivors are trying to walk out of the city.

Hi Lunacie...I wasn't trying to dis you for posting that email. You mentioned you didn't know if it was true so I automatically snopes (I have to do it all the time for my friend's dad). And yes, you're right...it will take time for them to check these out.

I completely agree...maybe it did not come across in my post. I think it is a very good email and I'm glad you posted it.

I imagine the decision to walk must be very difficult. Which way do you go? Are you going to hit an area this is impassable? Is there worse distruction out there? Some of them may have lived in NO all there life (I know people who have never left the Bay Area!). It doesn't sound like anyone is giving them directions. Also, certain areas are blocked off...per the New York Times yesterday...it looks like Rte 90 is the best way out of the city. But we, as a country, are not used to it. Do you choose the known from the unknown? Help is 'supposed' to be coming. I just saw a post this am that apparently there is aide ready but they are not allowing them into the city because it is too 'dangerous'!!!

I've joined and will be sending energy at 8.30 PST.

Hi Lunacie,

This letter is real! I found it on www.bbc.co.uk (www.bbc.co.uk) where I get most of my news. Here's the article:

I was so amazed (and still am) that anyone other than the news organizations are able to get messages out of the city. Gods bless those who are putting aside their own personal losses or taking time out of their own lives and business to help with the rescue. May karma and the Nat'l Guard kick butt on those who are getting in the way and preventing anyone from helping.

I have heard that some people can get a text message out on their phones as long as it is long distance cause the local lines are packed. That is so amazing Im glad there is atleast some medical personell there to help.
