If you are doing a banishing ritual, such as LBRP (which I currently use my own variation of), or any banishing ritual really, would it not make more sense to turn counterclockwise? Instead of starting in the East & moving to South & so on, what about starting in the North & moving West? I know ultimately it depends on what feels right & what gets the job done, but I'm interested in other opinions. Comments? What banishing rituals does everyone here use, if any at all?

Turning widdershins makes sense. There are a lot of threads here on banishing... might give the ol' search function a try...

Honestly?
If a banishing is needed (I'm talking unwanted Spirits of sorts), I simply invoke my Patron Goddess (The Morrigan) and once her energy is within me, I release it all over the room/place where the entity I want to banish is present.
It usually does the trick

In the case of the LBRP, you go clockwise because you're invoking the godnames/archangels in place of what you're banishing. It's the act of invoking, whilst using the banishing pentagrams (of earth, in all quarters because that's where the ritual has its focus) that creates the banished space around you. That takes precedence.
Also, you start from the East because in the Golden Dawn idea of things, East is the lightest element and therefore easiest to "pick up". As you go round, the elements gradually get denser until you get to the densest/heaviest in the north. Having gained momentum from going around the rest first, it's easier to pick up the magical current and carry it round full circle. Starting in the north would give the circle an entirely different quality.
Some people also believe that the north is the quarter of the gods, and it would therefore be disrespectful to start in that quarter because it would imply we are placing ourselves on their level. Starting in the east, where the sun rises - ie in a natural starting place, a place of natural order - is more in keeping with the intention of the ritual. Well, one interpretation of being to align yourself with the natural order and balance, cutting yourself off from the negative Qlipphoth.

Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for. :)

Right on! If it works, you can't go wrong. :)

Instead of starting in the East & moving to South & so on, what about starting in the North & moving West? In the LBRP you start in the east because east = the Holy Guardian Angel.
What banishing rituals does everyone here use, if any at all?I use the Rose Cross ritual for banishings.

Whats LBRP??
Anyway, I use a New Moon Banishing Ritual (anyone who wants it can just PM me) and that seems to work real well, but I strongly agree with Seren bout the direction- in calling on elements and structured things as such, you should follow the sun :uhhuhuh:

I've never used the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. It, like many traditional things, I am very suspicious about. It has certain aspects that seem so illogical that I cannot help but wonder if it, like so many things, is saturated with intentional misinformation for the sake of secrecy or if it was devised by those who were never truly that logical to begin with.
One point I'll touch on to provide an example is the use of banishing pentagrams in the ritual. For me that seems almost counter productive to the matter at hand. Banishing pentagrams banish the respective elemental energy, so why would I wish to banish elemental energy unless it is that elemental energy that I wish to release, banish, or cast aside intentionally? Generally, I don't want to do that. In general I want to bring it in to begin with, not dispel it in the beginning.
I've devised my own methods of banishing over the years, some are simple whimsical ones, others more complex that I use as part of a fierce regimen.

The article posted by Derwin in this thread may answer some of you curiosities & suspicions about this ritual. I found it a good read.

Banishing pentagrams banish the respective elemental energy, so why would I wish to banish elemental energy unless it is that elemental energy that I wish to release, banish, or cast aside intentionally?
Because that is the intention. You banish the elemental energy, and in its place the elemental archangels are invoked. In completing the whole ritual, you're supposed to have cut yourself off from everything except the Sephirotic forces (through the use of the godnames and archangels) you've invoked in placed of the elemental forces, leaving you cut off from negative everyday influences. By doing so, you align yourself with divine energy, which acts as protection. If you want to work with the elemental energy, you perform the invoking version of the ritual, which goes exactly the same except that you use invoking pentagrams of earth at each quarter.
The effect of the ritual is limited by the fact that it operates only in a general sense (but usually that's enough for most practitioners). That's why it's the Lesser Banishing Ritual. The Supreme Ritual of the Pentagram (invoking or banshing) ties up the holes and can be used to get more specific.
The construction and format of the ritual does make sense when you look at it in a Qabbalistic context.
