Actually...one of the first teaching circles we new with new members is a circle on fire safety... including intruducing everyone to the sacred fire extinguisher... where it is during ritual and how to use it instantly. And everyone in the circle also does the teaching circle as a refresher.
We also show newbies the awful wooden candle holder.... partially scorched.. because, of course, an unwatched candle burned down and almost set the place on fire. Don't ever, ever even have wooden candle holders around because if they are there, someone will use them. They are just a very very bad idea.. no matter how pretty.
Does anyone else have any fave pagan fire safety tips? bb talamh

It was Halloween... and I was drunk
23 is a number of power for the Illuminati and its associated organizations. It's power actually stems from the number 5. 23 is derived from five since 2+3=5.
The "Law of Fives" is a basic tennant of the Discordian religion, and can be applied to all facets of existance. Our calendar, for example, has five months in it, and holidays are always on the fifth day of every month. This same cycle can be applied to the rotating of the sacred chao, as order breaks down into chaos, reorganizes and is destroyed again.
23, 5 and multiples and divisibles thereof appear a disproportionate number of times in concordance with the key events that shape our times. For more information, I advise reading the Principia Discordia ('www.ology.org/principia/') and Robert Anton Wilson's ('www.rawilson.com/main.shtml') "Illuminatus Trilogy".

whoah, that "Principia Discordia" is some wild crud! ^__^ kewl. It's so random it makes sense LOL It also probably helps that I read it at about 2am. Very interesting! Or not really that interesting at all. I'll let you know when I decide if I decide to let you know.

Links wouldn't work for me! :(
Yes, good ol' CT
And, this brought back a memory.
I went to Catholic grammar school. The pastor there (he's still there) is very open minded and tried new things to get kids involved in religion and faith in general.
One of the things he did was to change the way he "heard" confession from the students. He knew the thought of getting into a dark confessional and whispering sins to the priest on the other side was not something they looked forward to or found to be the least bit cleansing.
So he had students write things down on paper. He told the kids to think long and hard about things that upset them, and never used the word "sin" either.
He then had a service, one grade at a time, and in a small ceremony, burned the papers the children had written on! He talked about the fire, the smoke rising, and doused the embers with water.
I never thought about that until just now...

Actually, for some people, it's Halloween, not Samhain. Like, for me, I still have Christmas. :)

I couldn't do away with Christmas. When else would my folks send me gifts?
And you're right. Fire's a mean little thing, and last year when throwing away a stub of incense I burnt a hole in the garbage pail. Now, no candles for me. My parents have banned them. They thought I was smoking. (was not!)
