Just saw this article on Yahoo...it's amazing to read how incredibly generous people are, when they see such a horrible disaster. 587 MILLION dollars raised so far!

That is wonderful....hopefully, it will be allocated in an effective manner! One thing that I thought odd, is that the article, while it mentioned several donations, some corporate, didn't mention that Walmart and the Walton familily have pledged 23 Million dollars...I thought that was pretty impressive, especially considering their not so wonderful reputation.

This is only a portion of the efforts here in Kansas:

When Wichita Dillons store and KSNW (tv station) officials first coordinated efforts last week to send supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims, they figured on filling three semitrailers in 10 days -- tops.

Now that they've filled nearly 30 trucks and are still amassing goods, Su-Ella McKinzie, director of Dillons advertising and public relations, said the response has simply been overwhelming.

"It's huge, and this has all happened in just seven days," she said. "We've had people bringing in products from all over Kansas and even from Nebraska."

12 semitrailers have gone directly to the GulfCoast and the supplies were among some of the first that disaster victims received.

Cash donations through the Dillons and KSNW efforts have ranged from $1 to $1,000. More than $1 million has been raised or pledged from the Wichita area.

The resturant chain I work with is sponsering an EAT OUT AMERICA day on OCT 5th , they are trying to get other companies to join in the effort and donate to the Katrina relief fund too from the money made on that day as by then things will have died down some and funds will be trickling in.The employees of the 3 stores that were lost in the hurricane are receiving help thru our Darden Dimes program. This is a program that employees donate a set amount of their check to go into this fund and any employee can get help from it when it is needed.
