I've crushed the herbs, but how do I make oils out of them? I tried it before with cooking oil, and it just fired it. :( I should've known better, lol!!! It was quite a site to see, but I was just curious as to what it means when it says: add the "oil base" in my various BOS books I've bought, that could mean anything! Suggestions are welcome, as always. :)

There is a class in our Circle of Teaching here that is about making oils. I suggest you look thru the class.AR is a great teacher and there is a wealth of knowledge there for You to read.

use a grapeseed oil as your carrier oil. You can usually get it at a healthfood store or co-op.
That'll be your best bet without a doubt. I hope that helps!
Good luck and happy mixing!
(oh! Nearly forgot, it will last longer if you use a brown or blue (in other words dark glass) bottle with a good stopper)

For some herbs it's wiser to purchase the essential oil rather than trying to extract the oil yourself from the herb. To get the oil out of some herbs it takes a lot more than just a pot and a spoon to crush them!
Check out this page about how essential oils are made (http://www.ibiblio.org/herbmed/faqs/medi-4-1-distilling.html) for some explanations. It is easy to get the essential oils from some herbs but some herbs are really tricky.

Has anyone ever tried extracting wood salts? I know they make great dew condensers and can be used for oil although nobody else ive talked to has tried it

I like to use sweet almond oil or jojoba oil for my carrier oils. Sweet almond is lighter and is good for floral scents, but jojoba oil is wonderful for the skin and hair. I use it in the winter to get rid of static...put a little jojoba on your comb and comb through your hair. It gives a nice shine to the hair and smells good too. My SO loves it...there's something about scented hair that makes men a little crazy. :heartthro YMMV, of course.
You can get both of the oils at organic markets or even the natural foods section of supermarket. If you want to use olive oil as a base you can, but make it in small batches because olive oil goes "off" after about 3 months. Don't use cooking oils like safflower or canola or sesame: they mute the scents and make everything smell strange. And don't use mineral oil. It's just bad.
I don't extract my own oils--apartment living doesn't lend itself to gardening. Instead, I buy essential oils and mix them they way I like. It's a lot of fun. If you find a scent you really like you can mix it with grain alcohol to make perfume. It's a good (and cheap!) present.

I have simmered herbs with olive oil. It will not fry if you keep it on low heat and simmer for 1/2 h. I have put them on the skin without problems but im not normally sensitive skinned so be careful what type of oils and herbs you use. If your not putting it on the body, pretty much any cooking oil works alright. :dancy:
