Currently I'm a junior in high school, and I still don't know what I want to do for a career! I thought about being a photojournalist or possibly (even though it's kinda the opposite) a psychologist. But I don't know what classes I'm looking for in a college or how to start! I need help!

Don't you guys have counsellors that can help you learn about this stuff too? There should be an office with all kinds of college pamphlets, videos, and other info, as well as counsellors who can help you out, or even tests to help you figure out what you want to do in life...?

I'm sure there are plenty of counselors that can help, and I'll ask them for advice too. But I would think that when you're choosing a college and career you would need all the advice you could get.

We have to take a whole class in Freshman year to help us decide what we wanna be. I don't care what they say I'm going to be a cop.

Yup, true, but the first thing I would do is see the experts on it - you should have an office dedicated to it. They'll know what courses are available in your area, what colleges are around there, costs, requirements, and everything. I wonder if there are career counsellors here at MW too?

Yes, definately talk to your school counselors. However, if you're just in jr. high school, this isn't really a question you need to be thinking about or worrying over in depth...you have 4 years of high school too ya know :D

oh btw, you don't have your location set. It might help for us to know that to know what schools are in the area - what courses they offer, requirements, costs, etc.

Actually with the compitition for getting in a good school now is the time to decide if you want to go to college so you can get the basic requirements done. Some schools want language like spanish, german......some more math or science or whatever. Try to find people in the fields you are looking at and see if you can volunteer to help out in thier offices or where they work so you get an idea if this is what you want to do. Above all remember you don't have to be tied to any choices you make now. Stay flexable you may discover the perfect job tomorrow you never know the market is constantly changing. My 10 year old wants to be in medicine she has even taken premed classes and is reading Gray's Anatomy it's all a matter of what feels right to you.

are nice. Also, freshman orientation will help sort stuff out. But, to really succed in college and not just have a blast, you need to be adult about it. A lot of kids just party for the first two years, and totally tear up their G.P.A. That is not something you can fix easily if at all.

Be sensible. Do well in high school, be as active in the clubs you like as much as possible.

IMHO -I am an older college student.

why not check into the explorer program.. there is an organization called the explorer scouts, it is an affiliate of boy/girl scouts... they let you see for yourself what it is like to do certain careeers...

It is for high school students....

also your rotary club should be helpful too

but by all means the answer should come from YOU!
talk to your family, talk to your guidence councelors that is what they are for :)

good luck and keep us posted

Most of the people I know had no clue what they wanted to do when they entered college. Even then, some of the kids who had decided ended up changing majors several times, before settling on one they liked.

It may be a good idea if you're undecided to go to a community college/junior college. That way, you can take a variety of classes, at a fraction of the cost of a four year university, and get your GE out of the way at the same time. You can explore your options, and find out what's best for you. You can even get a degree, (AA or AS), all without having to declare a major.
(You can also enter a university undeclared, however, you MUST, as far as I know, have declared your major by the time you enter your junior year. just a little fyi) ;)

for quite awhile. 3rd or 4th year.
Probably depends on school.

Artemis84, you said you are a junior? 11thgrade right?

Hmm Photojournalist, sounds interesting... as does being a psychologist (I had friends that took psych. courses in highschool and they seemed to enjoy it, but I think they only took it for the credits.)

If you do decide what you want to be while you're in high school, and take courses towards that goal, make sure that it's something that you're going to stick with. I made the mistake of thinking I wanted to be an accountant while I was in high school, and then a month or so before I was going to graduate I realized that wasn't what I wanted to be, and I had crippled many of the requirements for anything else I hoped to be (some of the prereq. courses for the Universities.. stupid U.Vic. ... *runs up and kicks the U.Vic building*... ouch >.<)

Anyway, counsellors are your best bet since they usually have booklets from the college that give you the prerequisite courses for everything. I personally never trusted the tests they made us take to decide our future job ideas. I wasn't too keen on the idea of Cel Painting @_@.

I'm going to stop typing now... I'm confusing myself.. again.
