I was coming back from the grocery store and I looked up at the sky to admire the moon as I often do on some nights.

Tonight the moon looked huge! What made it even more amazing

was that it looked like a reddish brown! It was amazing!

I tried to see if I could find any info online about it but I just couldn't

find anything.

I wanted to take a picture but when I went to get my camera I found out the batteries were dead :awwman:

So I went to find my camcorder.... those batteries were dead too :grrrrr: :bastard:

oh well.

I think it's dust or something in the atmosphere, ormaybe smoke, like from forest fires (not necessarily anywhere nearby) that can give it a reddish color ... that may be why it looked larger as well, if the view is kind of distorted ... I can easily imagine how it might be seen as a portent though ....

The reason for the orange color is that as we approach the autumnal equinox later this month, the position of the moon combined with the axis of the earth has us looking at the moon through a thicker layer of the dust in the earth's atmosphere, making it appear orange.

Next weekend's full harvest moon often appears orange in color due to the above situation. Also, the moon normally rises about 50 minutes later each day, but due to the equinox, the moon will rise only 20-25 minutes later each day, which in effect will give us what seems to be 4 days of an almost full moon. That's why they called it the "harvest moon", as in days past, the 4 days of that big moon let the farmers work at night bringing in the crops.

Also, about the 21'st, Mars will appear almost right below the moon, making it very easy to identify. The joy of Paganism is its' close association with our solar system, which feeds my enjoyment of astronomy very nicely! Enjoy the skies!

From the first sliver that She shows herself, not a night goes by that I don't see Her. Either for myself, or because my daughter is yelling "Mommy, look at the moon." She seems to be as infatuated with the moon as I am. I want to get a poster for her room of the moon...one that is a view as she sees it.

I had to sleep in my car last night, so I got a great view of the moon. Absolutely gorgeous!

I noticed the moon was a perfect half when I looked up to her earlier.
Now she is a funny yellow from the street lights.
In an hour she will be by my window looking me in the eye.
Then she will sit there till midnight.
I love seeing her in the day as well, nice sight seeing Sun and Moon together.

Couldn't see the moon last night - bad weather, very cloudy. Seems to be the same thing today. >.<

The moon not so pretty tonight I got up early 5 in the morning and watched Venus, Orion think I saw the big dipper and other stars far far away. Fall almost the only time the skies clear up in NY City.

I absolutely love the moon.

I am always in awe of her beauty. Ever since I was a little rugrat I have always admired her. I remembered later that night that when I was a little girl and lived on an island. We lived on a mountain and at night I would stand at the edge of the cliff near an almond tree and there I saw so many beautiful things. She is one of them.

The moon was huge and orange.... she was so close then (late 70's) that I thought I could touch her.

I was rather surprised to see the moon with such a similar color...it was big the other night but not as big as when I was 5 yrs old. I try to make it a point to see her at night but its rather hard. I have a lot of trees on my property and it she hides behind them.
