Does anyone know why this herb causes relaxation in humans, but not in cats? a friend of mine wants to know...since he is drinking an herbal tea at night to try to get himself to sleep....and i offered to look into it for him....
i have searched my books, the internet, everything, and can't find the info i am looking for....
please help....

Catnip, catmint are the same. They're members of the mint family. There's a constituent of catnip that is chemically very similar to the chemical in valarian. This chemical is responsible for the sedatary effects of valarian. Same as catnip.
Catmint is an aphrodisiac to cats. If you watch the cat, they would roll in it & chew it to release the scent. It's the scent that drives them crazy. There's a chemical in catnip that triggers something in cat brains. Unfortunately, human brains are physiologically different so it doesn't affect us. :D Also, catnip doesn't seem to affect all cats the same way.

For some reason, that struck me as hysterical!
I had 6 cats- 3 right now- and they each reacted, or didn't react at all, differently too.
Chris, would love a roll in catnip if it worked LOL!
