I just got my copy of the DVD release of the documentary "Legend of the Witches" filmed in the late 1960s. It features the (in)famous English witch Alex Sanders and his coven in a number of the clips. I haven't watched it yet but plan to do that sometime this week.

I've heard about this documentary before and how it was overly sensational, sticking more to the stereotypes of witches common in the 1960s and 1970s rather than exploring the truth of witchcraft and Wicca. Has anyone else here seen it, and what are your thoughts about it?

Were there any bits that you thought they did right? What did they mislead the audience with?

Personally I thought it would be interesting to see if only for the chance to see Alex Sanders, Maxine Sanders, and some of their coven members in action (even if they are shown out of context.)

Oh -- and while the DVD is released in the UK and not here in North America, I was able to purchase a copy over the internet from a UK website. (And while it says it's for Region 2: UK and not Region 1: North America, it seems to play just fine in my North American DVD player. I guess they didn't get around to actually doing the region encoding when they made the DVD.)

Strangely enough it was shown on satellite tv on the 'horror channel' not that long ago (in UK), so we videoed it.

I personally found some bits funny (as in ha ha), especially the initiation part - it was the woman's voice that did it, sorry! Its interesting to watch as showing what they were doing at the time, I must say though, Alex gets all the pretty outfits whilst poor Maxine seems to be wearing the same old bit of chiffon! <WG>

I think you'll enjoy it ... :)
