hi all,
im sneaking on here from work right now, and i just had a realization. im living in the movie office space, or dilbert, take your pick.......and its killing me. i hate gray cubicles.......i hate the stupid things the bosses do to boost morale. they send out "insperational" emails every morning, cheesy stuff like, "if you give up your never be a winner"......blah, blah, blah. i just hate the fakeness of it all. i work in a call center for a cell phone company answering quesions about cst bills, ect.......i deal with morons all day, and then everyone around here tries to make it less terrible with all of the fake cheese.
whew. i needed that, but hey, i guess we all sell our soul to the man to pay the bills

Gods, I hate the cubicles! I've gotten lucky over the years, I've almost always had a solo desk and most of the places I worked didn't send out those hinky inspirational emails. We had the pictures framed on the walls though and it used to give me the willies to see them. My biggest gripe about the whole "office" mentality was the whole "team player" crap that the higher ups would spew at us lowly serfs... What was always rolling through my mind was, "you want me to be a team player? Then I want stock options, pension perks and a chance to buy myself a seat on the board".

I couldn't agree more!!!! I do environmental engineering work as an intern. I have a cube, but if someone else needs to use it from outside, I'm kicked out of my own damn cube!!!! Sitting in front of a computer, point, click, ctrl c, ctrl v, repeat process ALL day gets to me! Thanks for posting such a real and true thread!!!!

I don't think most jobs are supposed to be fun
I work in a factory. I don't mind my job. It pays the bills.
I have always wants to be a surgeon but never had funds to go to university.
Take what you can get until you can find something better

*sigh* Right there with you all! Lost in the cube jungle, destined to be chained to a desk for the rest of my life. Stuck going to meetings where you are to be seen & not heard. What I don't understand is why would they tell you that you get to do something in this job so you get all excited & motivated & then they outsource the work! Oh ya...to get you motivated to be productive. And why do they bother to ask you your opinion on a marketing piece when they've already made up their mind & don't listen to you at all!?!?!?

This job, cube, boss are sucking the life out of me. I've been to every website there is known to man & I still have 4 hours left of work. :wah2:

I work in a cubicle farm. I think it is fun because you can throw stuff at others over your cube, and no one knows where it came from. I also like the fact that there is always a lot of yelling over the cubes. And it is usually something extremely inappropriate right when the CEO is walking by. Good times.

My idea of Hell :(

Can you maybe stick pictures on your walls or have plants about your desk or something just to humanise it a bit? I'd have to or I'd go mad :spaceman: :fpcsucks :crazyman: :atantrum: :blech: :grrrrr:  :damnpc: :shaker: :awilly:

lol, yeah, i have a plant at my desk named bob, and pictures of my son everywhere, it tends to help. i just hate all the fake sincerity. one day i want to be able to say "do you honestly think i care!" to a cust, that would be nice. and we also have the inspirational posters up to. the one tht scares me the most is the hang in there one with the cat falling off a limb.....ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
oh well, im still being bad and sneaking on the net.....ha,

You absolutely have to do that! Pictures of family and friends, plants, and I even had little toys all over the place so when I needed a minute to clear my head I could play with my mini Etch a Sketch!

Does it make me weird that I've actually always wanted a cubicle?

lol
Eneyway, you can get past it. Buy some really nice fabric that you like and pin or staple it to your cubicle. Put lots of pictures all over, and get a little air plant or something. Make it your own and it won't make you so miserable anymore.

I know how you feel 'cause I'm right there with you. And we can't tape or staple anything to the walls in ours only hang things from the two slots where walls attatch to each other using paper clips. Aargh!

Ugh. I wish I was in a call center! I am so useless here. >_<; All I do is answer phones (not busy AT all), pick up stuff from the printer and give it to people, and sort the incoming mail. Oh. And they have me do the menial crap, like cleaning desks and packing people's personal stuff up. Soooo bored.

Anybody's call center hiring?

That's how it is at our place. My cubemate and I like to entertain our fellow prison..er workmates with showtunes and sometimes even little dances. You should see us do "So long, farewell..." from Sound of Music.

The managers always walk by when someone is yelling out something rude or when taken completely out of context sounds rude. Usually it's rude, though. Yep.... good times.

LOL...I used to work for the State...hated it, but it paid the bills and it was a whole lot better than starving. We were allowed to dress up our desks, but nothing on the walls. At least in my last job there I had windows to look out of (no cubicles, no privacy at all--just a couple long rows of desks). It was a little better than when I'd worked in the basement of the archives, back behind stacks of archived material, under a single lightbulb. Floors were concrete, walls were concrete. Oh yeah, that was delightful. :)

I'm in a cubicle. :( But if I lean my chair substantially to the right, I can see through my attorney's window and he has a nice view of Mt. Hood.
We call our cubicles "pods" and I don't know why. It's very sci-fi. We can fit four people to a pod, but for some reason, there are only two of us here, so it's not so crowded. It's tolerable most of the time, but my "pod-mate" has a serious smokers cough which makes me want to gag sometimes. I feel horrible about my reaction to it, but it's very disgusting. Maybe that's why it's only me and her in the pod. No one else will tolerate it.

Psy - I worked for a law firm for about a year and they called them pods as well! That was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I've heard them called bays or cubes, but not pods. Sounds like you've got a doozy sitting next to you, hopefully she's at least nice even if she's hacking all day.

I worked in one but there were only about 10 people who worked in that part of the building. I had a small cubicle which was nice since I could reach everything without trying, then they moved me to a bigger cubicle because someone new needed my old one and I actually had room to put stuff, then they moved me into an office because they hired another new person that needed my cubicle. The office was just for guest workers and they knew I would be gone before anyone came around so I had an office with walls, windows, and a door for a few weeks. It was pretty cool.

My ex had a job as a telemarketer...if a customer was ranting on & on, he'd stand up and hold the phone down by his butt for awhile... LMAO ROFL.. the whole office would be roaring...

Weird. It must be a law firm thing.

Funny you should mention it. She is mean to everyone BUT me. She rips people new ones all the time. She's a hilarious old hag. Just b*tchy as all get out. I just stay on her good side. I feel safe knowing she'll be on my team if ever there is an office revolt.

But the phone goes by your face normally. Is that something a person should want to do?
