Senate Republicans on Wednesday scuttled an attempt by Sen. Hillary Clinton to establish an independent, bipartisan panel patterned after the 9/11 Commission to investigate what went wrong with federal, state and local governments' response to Hurricane Katrina.

Interesting that every Republican Senator, with the exception of the one from Lousiana, voted against this.

The roll call votes are here:

It's funny how the Republicans spin this crisis as if it's the Dems making it partisan. But the Dems are calling for bipartisan, independent investigation, and the Repugs burn it.

The Repugs also had a fake reason, that 'we shouldn't investigate an open Justice Dept investigation.' But Whitewater and Watergate were investigated by both the Senate and Justice, to name 2 of MANY.

Sheesh.

It's funny how people assume that any commission proposed by the Dems would be truly bi-partisan and impartial. There should be a truly independent commission, i.e. without the politicians. I agree with the idea that we should get 5 retired generals to review everyones actions and produce a truly bipartisan and apolitical report.

You don't think retired generals would be partisan?

I don't assume that. I assume that a commission proposed by anyone that is specifically designated as bipartisan will be bipartisan, which is what Sen. Clinton proposed, andwhich every single Republican voted against.

Why not? Their careers were apolitical, if told to keep it that way they will do it. They should get Gen. Shelton, Franks, Shakashvilli (sp?), Adm. "Snuffy" Smith, and one more, perhaps an 'in your face' Marine. . Not Clarke (too much of a politician), Maybe Shinseki, but I'm not impressed with him (both in what he has done and what I've been told thru the grapevine).

Sorry, I don't trust Hillary, and wouldn't be so naive. Remember, the 9/11 commission was supposed ot be bipartisan, but that proved to be a partisan and poor investigation (Able Danger anyone?).

people are now so entrenched in blame on both sides that they cant even see the real issues ahead of them because they have to spend all of their energy deflecting accusations and coming back with better ones. The result is...well this.
