My town has this (rather stupid, I think) bylaw that says you can't have more than two dogs. Well, I have two dogs and for the last 3 weeks or so I've been babysitting my mom's pekenese while my parents went on a bike trip down the coast, and then over to Tahoe. Buddy (the peke) went home this evening.

However, this morning....grr....first thing in the morning and it ended up ruining my entire day....

The door bell rings.... It's Animal Control and they've gotten a complaint that I have 3 dogs. I explain that I'm babysitting my mom's dog and he's going home today, and the officer said, "oh, that's okay then." and that was the end of that.

So what made me mad? The absolute gall of someone, most likely a neighnbor, to call Animal Control and complain because I have 3 dogs!! Come on! Do one of two things... either mind your own damn business, or ASK ME about it! A polite, neighborly "I noticed you have 3 dogs, did you know about the bylaw?" would have sufficed.

Instead, I'm left thinking that one of my neighbors is out to screw me, and now (paranoid about pleasing everyone that I am), I'm worried that I've done something to make one of my neighbors not like me. Sigh....

And, since he was going home today anyway, now they're gonna think, "Haha! We made you get rid of your dog!!!"

I hate people.

I'm dkrunk. ) The look on my neighbor's face (bitch!) was priceless when I showed her the kennel license. So, you want to complain, huh? Take it up with the town council or something, because as of now we're stone cold legal and you can KMFA (bitch!).

I hate neighbors.

Hmph. Some people just aren't happy unless they are trying to get other people in trouble. Bastards. I have those kinds of neighbors too. Hate 'em.

My landlord actually tries to enforce a "No pets" policy, but he can't. He only owns the land. The houses are all owned by the residents. (prefab houses) The only thing he can enforce is no pets left outside. Other than that, he has no say over what is kept inside our homes.

You ought to ask your mom if you can "dog-sit" for a couple more days just to see if that neighbor calls animal control again. :rotfl: If they do come back, you can call your mom to have her explain that she got "held up" somewhere or something.
If the neighbors think that you're getting away with having 3 dogs, they'll get mad as hell! _travolta_
Sorry, sometimes I get pretty evil! :hehehe:

they have similar bi-laws here in aus.. you can only have 3 dogs without a license to have more..i guess it stops people taking in strays and ending up not being able to look after them properly..
I hate nosey neighbors especially when they don't have their story straight.. I pretty much hate neighbors full stop though..I always manage to get crappy ones.. the worst one i had would come and tell my how to use my a/c.. i really need to move to a farm or a place with a huge stone fence with razor wire on the top to keep everyone away..

who ever reported you must have been a very petty person.. its not like it was a big dog you were puppy sitting.. maybe they got busted for having too many dogs once so they go around reporting anyone they see with more then 2 dogs just to be butts..

if it was me i would get the kennel license thing and start a dog sitting service just to piss them off or even just a dog grooming/puppy play date service lol

Sometimes those bylaws are intended to combat animal hoarding. Animal hoarding is when somebody takes in strays and ends up with hundreds of animals living in horrible conditions in their house. (Go here (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/cfa/hoarding) for more info on animal hoarding. Warning: can be gross.) So I can see where the bylaws might be coming from.

But calling animal control on your neighbor because you saw an extra dog at her house is just plain bitchy. Some people just hate to see anyone enjoying life.

(Go here (http://www.tufts.edu/vet/cfa/hoarding) for more info on animal hoarding. Warning: can be gross.) So I can see where the bylaws might be coming from.I can see your point, and yes, there was some woman in the next town who died, and when they went in her house, she had like 200 cats in there. People actually had to put hazmat suits on to be able to stomach going into her house.

It doesn't have to be taken to such insane extremes though. Between our two families, my parents and we have 14 dogs. They're all strays. They don't get top shelf vet care because we can't afford it for so many, but their shots are all up, they're in good health except for natural aging-related problems. We give them all the non-mandatory shots ourselves to save a fortune (because we don't need certificates proving they got them.) They're happy, and they're a lot better off here than where they came from.

We get into it with the neighbors over barking though. Our dogs make it difficult for their unemployed 27-year-old son to sleep until noon after staying out all night partying. Poooor baby. Their damn dogs make as much noise as ours do, and they have as many as we do, but they have selective hearing. (Theirs are expensive purebreds they raise for money, see, while ours are just useless mongrels.)

Screw'em. We read the law, and we're on the right side of it. KMFA. I hate neighbors. I'm with that other poster who wants all the razor wire. One of those fences like in Jurassic Park feels about right.

and i thought the USA was the land of the freeIt's the land of the Homeowners' Association, mostly. It's getting difficult to find a house that isn't part of an association. Basically, you pay the mortgage, you eventually get the deed, but you're still contractually obligated to pay dues to this association, and to obey all their rules for what color your house can be, what shape your mailbox is, how tall you are permitted to allow your grass to grow, etc. If you fail to comply with the rules, they can fine you. If you don't pay these fines, or fail to pay your dues, they can actually seize property you own and sell it to the highest bidder, forcing you out of your own home with little recourse but to try to fight an almost hopelessly weak case in court.

It's sheerest insanity to me. I would never sign that contract. When I went house shopping, my unwillingness to be a party to this sort of shenanigans really limited my options. These things are, in effect, mini municipalities, and they are springing up everywhere.

Some real municipalities do the same thing too. I know people whose towns have people who go around with rulers measuring their grass, or counting their dandelions and whatnot.

Land of the free my ass. Although we still have some measure of freedom to live somewhere else. Until this kind of nonsense spreads everywhere anyway.

Well, I'm lucky that the whole home owners association thing has nothing to do with me. :) I've found that those things are mostly prevalent in suburbs. I just live in a really small town, where people seem to think that everything is their buisness. I would never move into a 'manufactured community' that restricts what I can do to my property....I bought my house so I could do whatever I want to it.

I don't like having neighbors for the most part. I'd really hate to live in a suburb.

How is a Homeowner's Association even legal? They are basically the suburban mafia.
