Rune #11 of the Elder Futhark is Isa (EYE-suh, or EE-suh), quite literally, ice. Isa's phonetic value is the letter "I". It corresponds to the color white, & the Element Water. Isa has a feminine polarity, & is associated with the Norn Verdandi, the Giantess Skadi, & Ice Giants in general.

When Isa comes up in your reading, it often means that things are 'frozen'; you 'spin your wheels & get nowhere', as when you drive on ice. If things are moving at all, it's at the pace of a glacier. This can indicate to procede very slowly & cautiously, & to more or less just let things happen in their own time. Be patient. Just as a frozen river begins to break up & move in the spring, so it is when Isa indicates things are at a stand-still. This is temporary (as a time indicator, I read Isa as meaning approx. 6 weeks to 3 months, about the length of time that a river might freeze over in the winter). Isa might also indicate a 'wintry' time in your life; it might do well to be frugal rather extravagant.

In Northern magic, there are sometimes considered to be five Elements-Earth, Air, Fire, Water, & Ice. In this paradigm, Ice is the hardest Element (actually, considered the hardest substance, even harder than steel). From this correspondence, Isa can also indicate strength, toughness, hardness; this is usually refering to having an iron-like inner strength.

PS Can one of you techno-folks post the customary photo of this Rune? If it's more technological than a toaster, I fear it... :D

Thats was great Rick! :D
I had heard about the five element beliefs before, and Ice, it is very interesting! Thank you!

Heres the piccie of Isa ~ a straight line ~ I ~ ~ this stands for attention ~ Stop. & also I as in examination of the self.

I believe it to mean the same things as Rick ~ a standstill, a blockage, cold times, dont do too much, maybe a death of a situation or relationship, maybe a scarfice, a time for reflection of life and self, a time to wait.

You can also use this rune to stop things in magick and for deep personal self discovery in meditation.

:)

btw Rick, I copied out a few of your practical rune magick spells out for a friend of mine who wanted to do some protection magick. Isa was in one, and I think it was part of the reason she feels so much better - kind of stopping their negativity from reaching her, or that it's icey and is "chilling them out". I hope. :)

Is, Iss, Isarz and in swedish isrunan (which sort of means rune of ice)

Stands for: stagnation, stillness, waiting. This is the rune of ice and winter, cold, snow and all of those things. It tells us about waiting and focusing and staying centered. Isrunan wants you to calm down, to take it cool. Welcome the stagnation and stillness to your life, use it, don't push it away. Perhaps you need this time to focus your mind. Isrunan brings back harmony.

wear this rune when you need some peace and quiet so that you can focus your thoughts on important matters in your life.

This is a good rune to wear when one is studying. :)

ok lets see .... i think i got this right .... tell me if i didnt

Literally, the name Isa means hailstone. Hailstones are water transformed for a short while from its liquid into it solid phase, during which time it falls from the sky, sometimes so violently that it destroys crops or property. But when the damage is done, it melts, changing back into harmless, even beneficial, liquid water. More generally, Isa represents all aspects of frozen water that falls from the sky -- sleet and snow as well as hail. Everyone who has experienced a bad winter will know the sudden transformation that a snowstorm brings. Green fields and black roads are transformed rapidly into a sea of whiteness. Equally transormative is the thaw, when the colors of the landscape are restored. In folk magic, this rune is the protective sigil called the lucky star. This is drawn as a six-petalled flower formed of arcs within a circle. It can be seen on many old buildings, still protecting them magically against bad weather. Isa's element is ice, the fifth element in the Northern Tradition, ruled by Rinda, goddess of the frozen earth.
Sorry, you just described Hagalaz...

Along with Jera and Eihwaz, Isa corresponds to the festival of Yule (midwinter). Isa represents the frost giants. Jera is the turning point of the year, symbolizing the return of the sun or Baldur and the lengthening of the days. Eihwaz represents Yggdrasil, the evergreen tree, which maintains the appearance of life throughout the winter. The Christmas tree is a remnant of this belief. The hailing of the returning sun could be symbolically enacted in a ritual involving these runes.
