View Full Version : Do you ground?

So, a thread in the newbie forum got me thinking, some people seem to be able to do energy work ungrounded, without getting weak/tired/headache afterword. I am NOT among their numbers, but I've noticed on this board and others that there seems to be a fair number of people who can.

If you can send energy without grounding, why do you think you're able to?
If you can't send energy without grounding, why do you think you have to ground and other people don't have to?
How long have you been practicing?
If you said it depends, could you explain?

No flames please, I'm not saying some people are better than others at energy work or that one set of people are doing it right whilst the other are doing it wrong. I'm just curious about this phenomenon.

Thanks for participating!

What happens when you don't ground when doing a protective shield or energy work or spells?

I dont know about anyone else, but if I don't ground before doing energy work (sending energy, raising energy for spell, ritual etc..) I get very tired, get a headache and sometimes I even get dizzy (but thats really rare). Its been over a year since I did energy work without grounding so it may be different now. On the other hand, I usually don't ground when I'm putting on a protective shield, unless its supposed to be a really strong sheild.

I always ground and center as well. I didn't a couple of times and for about the next 24 hours I couldn't concentrate, I was tired, irritable, I even felt slightly "sea sick" (the best way I can describe it). So, that said, I learned my lesson, Quickly, and now I always ground and center.

Looks like I'm the only no, never vote. I never have and I've not noticed any ill effect. Strangely enough a few times I've grounded and been physically ill afterwards. Which never happens if I don't ground at all. As a matter of fact things like hematite give me the worst headache.

i don't ground before i send energy, yet i do try to ground myself every night. My guess would be some people remain grounded easier and stay that way, where as others get caught up in other things and then need to RE ground themselves. make sense? just my 2 cents

I ground and center without even thinking about it. It just happens.

When I'm tired (physically), had a every emotionally turbulent time I find I have to think about grounding more often. I use it for everything... not just magickal things. If I'm very angry, or depressed, or upset... any kind of feeling I don't want, or aren't useful, I ground them and get rid of them, asking my guides and the god and goddess to take them for me, and dispose of them properly.

I always do, not so much because of after effects (the only time I've had issues is after really major energy work - full coven stuff, for example) but because it helps me make sure I can tell what's me, what I'm sending, and what's related to the other person/people around me. It also helps me weed out stuff that's mundanely affecting me (worries about bills, or schedule, or chores at home, or bad traffic, or whatever.)

It's the functional equivalent of starting out in a balanced position before I start exercise or music, or being prepared to start any other physical activity - a chance to make sure I'm ready to go, have taken stock of myself, and can make any adjustments needed consciously, rather than trusting solely to intuition.

Of course, I also rarely do any lengthy grounding work. Since it's something I've been doing at least once a day for years, now, the process is under 30 seconds, and not at all obvious to most people.

I shield myself more, especially when I'm online. But I definitely ground and center without much fore-thought.

I ground and center before training (energy, not exercise!) because I find it makes me more focused, and I can practice for much longer before my energy fades. It helps me keep up during lessons because i can tap into energy beyond my own "store" before I must concentrate solely on one thing.

But if im just playing S&R with friends, charging stones or light ritual work i usually wont bother. A few deep breaths is enough.

With hard training sessions I will have a headache by the end of it weather I ground or not, and often it's the same with S&R because if the other person/people get a headache they tend to pass it along. I find grounding after ritual more important than at the begining because I usually work alone. In a group though I encorage everyone to ground and center at the beginging as well.

I do just because it helps me calm down and focus on what I am about to do. Sometimes I dont however and either way I am still tired afterwards , no other side effects though.

Wow, these are all such variable answers. Thaks to everyone that particpated so far ;) It seems that it the need to ground depends on the individual and I'm not really seeing any patterns as to why or why not its nec. in some people and not others. Perhaps its just random?

Maybe we'll a pattern will emerge with time.

Thanks again to everyone thats voting and posting, its very helpful!

I sometimes ground myself after doing energy work and meditation. I do find that I like the feeling of not being grounded after and remaining in that state, but at times I like to save my energy and so I sometimes ground.

i suppose it depends on your diffenition of grounding, for me grounding would
simply be finding my "center" within meditaiton, most times that centers found
through a object i visualize.
i rarely ground by its traditional sense though,so i voted "no never ground".

I voted sometimes. I try to but I forget much of the time. As for the people who do not ground, just out of curiosity, why not?

Grounding attaches one's spirit to the ground, to this planet. It's a way to let one's excess energy flow into the earth, where it will be cleansed. I prefer to attach my spirit to myself, while interacting with universal energy. Planets are so limiting.

Sometimes the escess energy from the spell work can affect you in bad ways. Sometimes you can also be drained, get a headache, feel ill etc.

Konnichi Wa to All:

I Voted "Sometimes".

Most of the Time, I like going to my Local Public Pool to allow the Sacred Element of Water to Cleanse me of my Unwanted Negative Energies.

Put what I am at one of my Sacred Groves doing Ritual, I do Ground my Energies as well.

i voted "yes, always" before i noticed that the poll and the topic were not the same. the topic says "Do you ground?", to which my answer is yes, always and invariably. it's important to keep the experience but you must ground the energy.

however, my response to "Do you ground energy before sending?" would be no, of course not! why would i discharge all that energy into the ground BEFORE sending it?

In my view, grounding isn't only discharging excess energy, its connecting yourself to the earth, grounding to the earth. So I have limited energy to send, but the earth has boundless energy. I ground so I can tap into that supply before I send so that I'm not depleating myself. Afterwards I ground again to discharge any remaining excess energy that did not get sent.

Does this make sense? I think I should have been more specific when I talked about grounding, gomen :)

Wow okay.

I don't usually ground. Ever. It feels so unnatural for me to ground before I send energy off to do something. I'll ground afterwards, though, just so I don't have much energy left hanging around me. :0
