The discovery of what is almost certainly his tomb reveals that crafty Odysseus, known as Ulysses in many English renditions of Homer’s “Iliad” and “Odyssey,” was no mere myth, but a real person. Plus, passages in the “Odyssey” itself suggest that modern Ithaca and its main town of Vathi probably were not the city and island of which Homer wrote.

That's interesting, but I've never seen such things mentioned. Although the columnist gave reasons as to why...it seems strange.

True, you'd think the international archeological community would be rushing in to verify the mayor's claims. This would generate headline news not just some little article buried in a trade journal if there were any truth to it. Still, it'll be interesting to see if anything does come of it.
