well my advice is maybe do a mapping out of the area back then, because names change over the course of years. Then after that do a mapping out of the people that lived there. Names of tribes changed too. That could help you. Good luck storm vixen.

I'ce composed my own list of english deites - but basically its down to a lot of research and knowing the right people to ask (offline)
So far as i have never found a website that lists them (although some do list a couple of them here and there)

I would look for research into the folklore of the particular area. Even if they don't tell you the specific details about the deities, you might get some hints from local folk tales (which are sometimes survivals of pre-Christian mythology) and local place-names.
Check to see if there is a local folklore or historical society. And check your local public libraries too as they might have local material hidden away on the shelves.

Speaking about British folklore... there might be some useful material in the books available at Heart of Albion Press (http://www.hoap.co.uk/).
Some cool stuff there on Pagan symbolism in historical architecture, local folktales, etc.

:hmmmmm: that sounds a bit neo-pagan to me, Storm Vixen; not very celticy, which a goddess of the Severn probably would be (considering it borders Wales).

Sabrina as the goddess of the Severn dates back quite a way in British history. She is described by Geoffrey of Monmouth, who lived around 1100 CE. The goddess' name is Habren or Hafren in Welsh, Severn in English, and Sabrina in Latin according to the summary of Geoffrey of Monmouth's account in this interesting article (http://www.whitedragon.org.uk/articles/sabrina.htm) about the history of the Severn and its mythological associations.
That article also mentions that Tacitus, in his Annals, refered to the Severn as Sabrina in the first century CE.
The Severn also has a god associated with it -- often identified as Nodens.

Oh I see - how interesting! Thanks Ben. My office overlooks the Severn so that's interesting to know.
It's a ferocious river - four people drowned here in the space of a week during the summer, on seperate occasions. The tide just comes in so fast you can't outrun it :noway: It would be interesting to know if the God and Goddess are known to be fericious, also. In my mind they would be a typical child of Occhus Necchus - wily and dangerous, beautiful and deceptive. I shall google them tomorrow :)
