How many of us have one of those "we were soooooo poor....." stories from parents or grandparents?
My favorite one is from my Dad; " When I was a kid, we were soooo poor that we ate dried apples for breakfast - drank water for lunch - and (dramatic pause) - just swelled up for supper!"

Well, humor aside ... my parents were raised in Oklahoma during the depression and my dad was a 'shiner during both the prohibition days and the depression. Dispensing "liquid refreshment" was lucrative if you were one of the lucky ones to live thru it ... and damn, he was lucky!

When I was a kid we were so poor, and the winters
were so cold, that we had to open the freezers to
keep the house warm. ;)

We had no TV. WE had to go over to other kids houses to watch Batman and Startrek. I tell my kids this and they are horrified. But, right now, WE are so poor that I can't pay the cable bill, and we have lousy reception around here. I LO-O-VE not haveing the idiot box turniing my kids into idiots. If I had my way, we would have gotten rid of the TV when the first one was born! It's amazing how much a kid can accomplish out of unrelieved boredom.
On a sadder note, My dad was soo poor when HE was a kid, that he was emotionally impoverished as well. HE is very very loving to Mom and us two daughters, but he definitely shows the scars of emotional neglect.

That reminds me of that old poem (I forget what you call these);
There was a young girl from Quebec
Who was stuck in snow to her neck
When asked, "Is you friz?"
She replied, "Yes, I is
but we don't call this cold in Quebec." :)

My step-father used to say "When I was a kid, we were so poor that we had to go out in the woods with slingshots and hunt for our next pair of shoes."
He would also say "When I was a kid, we were so poor that dirt cheap was expensive."

When I was about 5 we were so poor that all we could aford was hamburger. When my sister and I asked if we could have hotdogs, dad rolled hamburger into little wiener looking things and put them in hotdog buns. We were very greatful not to be eating hamburger again.
They were GREAT with mustard and relish!
