Tomorrow at this time, I will be sitting in a tree stand. Now I know that some of you here are going to become irate, but I am a hunter, and deer season opens tomorrow at sunrise. I ask that those of you who wish to do so, send me energy and luck in the hunt. Please keep in mind that this too is a part of nature.

I have no problem with hunters as long as they eat what they kill.

I won't kill it if I don't plan on eating it. For example, I got a small deer last year, it only weighed 115 Lbs. before butchering. When I was done butchering it, I had 73 Lbs. of meat, the rest was skin and bones that can't be used.

I too am a hunter, and believe if it dies for you, then you should eat it. I am glad you are that type of hunter. May your hunt be successful and may you be protected from idiots that shoot at anything that moves.

The Powers That Are have granted success! A doe (female whitetailed deer) was shot today at about 8:05am. The shot was a clean kill shot (which is actually very surprising with a bow and arrow), straight through the spine and heart. I believe my hand was guided.

Once again I was out in the tree...this time, though I wasn't able to have such a wonderful shot and ended up having to trail this one for about a mile. (!) After dragging it back out, it came up as a 4 y/o bachelor who'd lost a fight for a girlfriend. 3 of his 8 points were broken off. In the picture you see my oldest son (he just turned 7 and is as proud as heck).

wow! That is great! Honor thier spirits, for they have given thier lives to feed your family, and I ma glad that your kills were quick and merciful. Thes animals will sustain your family, and they will not starve this upcoming long winter, leaving more food for the others to survive.

looks like you will be eating good. Where are you hunting? Usually does are not allowed, is it something about your area, or is it OK with bows there? I know in California it isn't usually OK, but they do have special times when they are allowed. All to do with the balance of things.

To put none too delicate an edge on things, I only kill what I am willing to eat...I just haven't figured out a good recipe for flies...:alol: ...anyhow, I have some other recipes for venison if anyone is interested (think Steak Diane, Pot Pie, Herbal Roast w/ baby redskinned potatoes.....)

The hunting laws in Michigan are a little different. During bow season (1 Oct through 31 Oct) a bowhunter may take either antlered or antlerless deer (antlerless being any animal without a minimum of a pair of spikes at least 3" long). From 1 Nov through 14 Nov is muzzle loader season, and standard laws apply, i.e. special permit for antlerless deer, bow hunters may still hunt with their bows, but are required to follow the standard rules for muzzle loaders. From 15 Nov through 30 Nov is Shotgun/Rifle season. During this time, bows, muzzle loaders and Shotguns or Rifles (depends on area) may be used. All hunters in the are are required to follow the "standard rules" meaning basically, no does without a special permit. From 1 Dec through the end of the year is pistol, muzzle loader and late firearm season. The "standard" rules apply. There is a clause in the standard rules that allow for a private property doe/antlerless permit. There are a certain number issued per county. I usually get a combination permit (1 buck or antlered deer of any size, minimium single spike 3" long, and 1 restricted buck, minimum 3 points per side, 3" long each), and a private property doe permit for during the firearms seasons. I like to keep the herd in my area balanced. There are a lot of hunters around where I hunt who take only bucks, since they are looking for trophies. I instead look to take the bachelors who have lost the annual battle (meaning that they will probably not get a doe this year either and are probably done breeding forever....once they lose they are likely to keep losing), maybe a young buck (spike or button-horns less than 3") and a couple of does. This keeps the herd small and balanced.
