This house is old, and drafty.
My fingers are numb. I am shivering.
The thermostat reads 52 degrees.

Brrrrrr.

It's not yet October; I can't afford to turn the furnace on so early... does anyone have suggestions for keeping a bit more comfortable, aside from the obvious?

Is anyone else cold, or is it just me?

I'm freezing my butt off in a new house! :toofless: I'm just about to either go stand in the sun outside where it's warmer or wip out my electric blanket! I don't wanna turn on my furnace yet.

Can you get some plastic to cover the windows? You can buy the kits or even just getting double sided tape and a roll of plastic(the kind that shrinks a bit when you apply a blow dryer to it,doesn't have to be that kind, but I find that to work better and it looks like the window then).

Checking the calking around window sills and re-calking might help.

Making sure doors are draft free by using insulating trim can help...and of course the cute little draft animals that sit in front of doors(or in my case,a rolled up towel :weirdsmil ).

Covering an air conditioner with plastic if you have one will cut down on the cold air entering your home.

Most of those options are fairly inexpensive. The window treatments can get pricey, but worth it if the windows are very drafty.

Yeah...as of yesterday...it's really really really cold here too and I don't wanna turn on the heat yet either. Especially seeing as they are saying on the news that heating bills will be 70% higher this winter~!!!

Well since its still 100 here, (although I think it might only reach 98 or 99 today), we're still running the air conditioning.

Do you have a fireplace that you can light instead of the furnace?

Yeah, we had quite a cold front come through here too. We actually had frost on Wednesday morning. I still had roses blooming but they're gone now.

We may have to buy electric blankets this winter, or new comforters for the bed. We all have fuzzy slippers to keep our toes warm. Something people don't think about is how much body heat we lose through the top of our head, if you're really cold put on a hat or scarf or a hoodie. I wore my hoodie all winter the year after my ex left and I got stuck with the heating bills all by myself.
