View Full Version : Ouija and Sylvia Brown

My coven usually use the Ouija board for divination during Samhain. When I mentioned this to my mom, she told me to be very careful. She is a strong believer in Sylvia Brown the psychic who has predicted everything from plane flight terrorism to train terrorism, etc...She has recently advised to stay away from Ouija due to evil souls coming through that do not leave.
Samhain will be at my place this year and I am a little nervous! I have always heard as long as you Ouija with someone else you should be cool.
Thoughts?

the ouija board has had a very bad press, especially in recent years - but used safely and wisely with people who know what they are doing, they can be safe.
The only problem with ouija is that it DOES sometimes attract mischievious spirits rather than evil ones - mainly due to the fact that it 'operates' on the Celestial Plane rather than the Spiritual Plane.
But protection and grounding both before and after a ouija session should ensure the safety of all concerned.
Hope that helps. :)

If you don't feel comfortable with it. Then you don't. Let them know you're not ok with it and try to find a compromise.

I'm a firm believer in Sylvia Browne as well but I also believe that if you know what you are doing and take precaution with things like that...you are okay. The Ouija isn't evil BUT...just like everything else, bad things can happen. I'd advise a stong circle be erected and make sure you ground and everything.

I agree with SafeInTheWingsOfIsis... dang that's a long name, but anyway, you should erect a strong circle to make sure nothing can penetrate that, and make sure your other covenmates know your thoughts on having the Ouija in your home.

I would have to agree. Th ouija board is not bad just make sure that you take percautions. I'm sure that you will be fine.

I agree. I think that the danger comes in when people use a Ouija board as if it was a board game, and have no idea what they're doing.

I won't touch or go near one of those, or online ones!
But, its up to you. I tend to agree with her and bad things. I've known of deaths happening after peopel ask the board etc. I've heard a story of my firend's cousin's board burnign on fire. I don't even remember all the stories I've read and heard, but its enough to stay far, far away

I agree with the precautions others have stated. Personally, I think Sylvia Brown's full of it.

I like the Harry Potter quote:
"Never trust anything that can think for itself, if you can't see where it
keeps its brain."
The truth is you never know what or who you're talking to on those things. I've never heard of anything good coming from them.

I had a bad experience with one close to 40 years ago, Put the thing away, carried it around with me until about 15 years ago. My kids found it in the attic, unwrapped it and I found them playing with it! "bout gave me a heart attack! Needlessly to say it was thrown away then... I don't know if it was that board itself that was bad or all of them, or if it was just something trying to get at me, but I won't have one in the house.
My middle son, who should know better, bought one and took it to his friends house and they played with it...sure enough, I got a frantic phone call from him...they got a nasty spirit who started moving things, stomping around upstars, terrifying their dog.. He asked me to come over and cleanse the house...I did, things went back to normal and they trashed the board.....
I think for non witchy folks, maybe they can't contact anyone..thing?...For people like us...it can be dangerous.......
And I love Sylvia Browne....

My opinion is that it depends on the user. You have many young people (and also many not so young) using it as a 'cool' thing, and they possibly haven't had the experience and ability to deal with whatever comes. Essentially whether you use a board or not, my opinion is once you start doing magic you get the curious coming to have a 'look', some are mischievous and downright troublesome, its how you deal with them that's important. I remember hubby and I being at someone's home and a few of the people there dissappeared for a few minutes, we instantly knew they were up to something (we've been doing magic for a good few years) and came to the room they were in - they looked up at us like naughty schoolchildren that had been caught out by mom! <G> Essentially we made sure that they were in a safe environment. If you get someone who is is dead who comes for a looksee, I generally work with the theory that if they weren't a pleasant person in life they may not be so in death, thus having a good few level headed people that can put a stop to things is a good idea. You shouldn't get any problems then. I remember once being called out at 2am to a mixed faith household as they couldn't get rid of something, our techniques may have been brusque and no nonsense (after all it was 2am) but the house was cleansed of the troublemaker.
Take care and remember to keep a level head.

She comes off like a "big no-it-all" on TV. I'll give it to her that she is well-known and all of that. But some of the things she tells people on TV are just flat-azz mean. It's like when someone on Montel is asking about a loved one..she just blerts out what she thinks about the loved one without even thinking about it. Watch her next time on tv and see how quickly she sizes up loved ones who has crossed over. It's like she has the answer right on the tip of her tongue. People come to her for answers and they get the quick fix. Even if I could afford it..I wouldn't want to get a reading from her.
I think she needs to stick to writing books. Sorry for the rant.

I love Sylvia even though I dont agree with her on everything. But I dont mess with ouija boards because some not so nice spirits can come through and not want to leave. But if you know what you are doing and are comfortable and take all of the precautions then go for it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Quija is nothing to be feared. It's a mind game on yourself at worst, and a very weak conduit at best. If malicious spirits were coming to get you they wouldn't require any board to do so. I have heard tales of terrible happening with quija that I simply don't believe, while others you can rack up to overactive imagination, or self-fulfilling prophecy. Considering that thousands of "unexperienced" people employ these things everyday, I would be unlikely to believe them a threat of any kind until bodies start showing up slumped over their quija boards.
Sylvia Brown. Here is a case of fake it for the money. She is quite skilled in that arena.
My two cents,

I like Sylvia Browne although I don't agree with her on everything and I personally don't find her to be quite as powerful as she would seem. But I don't think she's a 100% fake. Anyways, for ouja boards. I've never used one. Only because I know that I'm not skilled with such things and I rather not take the risk of brining something unwanted here. But I believe with everyone that if you take proper precautions you'll be fine. But I will say this, I don't know if using one with that fear/nervousness in the back of your mind is good. I would think it might be best if you wait to use one when you're more confident. Well whatever you do I hope its right for you and good luck!

Some responsibility and a clear head and things should be ok. But remember that spirits will lie too. :deviltail

I don't see why it wouldn't be safe to use one as long as you are grounded, centered, and have erected your protective circle. I have read an excellent book on spirit communication which includes talking boards, and it states that only one person should work as the spokesperson and that you should have a list of questions ready that you want to ask before you start. Of course, you will want to elaborate on some things that are said, but that is normal. And, if you have a spirit guide that you are familiar with, you can actually speak with them rather than just any spirit that happens to come along. Just a few suggestions.

I havent messed with ouji boards since I had a mirror get posessed. I wont go into detail, but from where I'm standing, its a bad idea to have one in your house at all.
