View Full Version : Earth Magick/Ritual

I have been brainstorming ways to get more in touch with my element.
I so far have found these types of Magick being connected to Earth:
Tree
Stone/gem
Animal
Flower
knot and cord
Herbs/plants
But I have a feeling there are other form as well that I have not come across.
*Can one do Earth Magick without it centering on money and career and such things? I'm looking to have a wider array of things than that!
*Does anyone have any tips, ideas/suggestions of connecting more to the element of Earth (not just with Magick, but in practice and ritual)...besides the most obvious (going outside-- I do that already)??
*And does anyone here do any of the forms of Magick listed?

I'd go talk to a tree, find a stone, hold it in my hands, meditate by a stream, sit beneath said tree with said stone... take a leaf and study it, look at the viens, think of how something so simple is so vital, so magnificent... take a long walk in the woods. Listen to the birds. Get up and watch the sunrise, go out and watch the sunset. This is how I would say to get in touch with the earth... not really magic, but I believe the earth itself is magic.

Thanks, Shadow :).
Those were some of the things I brainstormed too! (Great minds think alike ;) ).
I plan on doing things like that-- especially because it is now Autumn and soon Winter. Autumn is my favorite season and I feel more connected to Earth from now on...and Winter is the season of Earth :)

Emotional stability is a great gift from earth. I also heard of an interestin all purpose banishing ritual where you commune with the stone spirit ask it to hold your issue and then visualize it going into the stone (if it says yes of course) and then burying it. This really worked for me. Good luck

Have you thought about having/growing some plants inside? It might be a nice thing to do, especially since winter is coming and everything is going away until spring.

Hummm, nice idea!
I just need a plant that needs shade as my bedroom has the crappiest lighting ever-- even when it is sunny it looks like early evening. Slightly annoying.
I'll see what I can come up with...unless anyone has an idea for an inside plant with full shade? :reading:

I use a lot of crystal/stone magick, because it comes naturally to me. *love love love*
hmmm... you could meditate on strength. This is a really good one. Each of the elements has a different type of strength, different ways to acheeve things and ways to protect itself and be used for protection. for example Water's *distructive* strength is erosion (sp). Slow and continual. Where fire's destructive strength can be seen by the way it hungrily devours wood etc. Think of earth in this way. Find the strengths inside yourself that are qualities of the earth. meditate on the links between earth and the other elements, the way their strengths interact, which are passive and which are active... I know i'm not really explaining this very well, so i hope you get my general gist. :)
other qualities of earth other than money, carrer and strength are:
preserverence (sp),
the ability to sit back and observe without being emotional or logical or self-centered,
The home
the physical side of yourself
working with your hands to make things
cooking
physical beauty, as in yourself, your home, art, nature.
Hope this helps. :p

How about working with clay? Not the plastic modeling clay, but with real clay. Or maybe cooking, especially with vegetables that you bought from a local farmers market or something. Just two things that popped into my head.
If you have problems with a light source for you plants you can purchase a grow light bulb and lamp. You can get one at any nursery or any kind of store that carries any kind of plant stuff. They are inexpensive.

Perhaps get a small herb garden going for the kitchen windowsill?

Clay, hummm... cool! I always wanted to make something with in besides a lame "cup" I did in my high school art class. I'll look into that next time I go to the craft store.
When I was little I used to spend hours making mud pies :)
Cooking-- I was thinking that too. I just don't know how to make it...more magickal. Usually I just cook to make dinner and eat, not for spiritual reasons.
Does Kitchen Witchery deal with cooking and things like that?
And I'm going to ask my mom about the house plants tomorrow. We have some Spider Plants that grow well inside. Maybe I can have her clip me a root/bud of one for me. :)
Thanks!:flowers:

Humm, good idea. We have Rosemary (my favorite herb) outside and we had a Basil plant till it died... oh some mint and catnip too...but the cats ate all the catnip.
I think the store sells little herb planting kits! How fun, I'm going to look next time I go to the store

I hope to go back Monday here and that is the nature center. If you can find one near by, I love it. I saw at least 10 deer and I saw a caterpillar and some cute squirrels and birds. Find out about upcoming activities as I am excited for their night time walk where the guids call to foxes and owls. I feel a walk through nature is best. Maybe bring things to give like water for a tree you connect with. I left a stone. I may do that next time too. I also sang to the deer. I would suggest this, even if for fun and not a ritual.

Plants you might do well with: Bamboo (doesn't require a lot of sunlight) or cacti. I'm about as unearthy as they come and even I can't kill those plants. No, wait I did kill my bamboo. Still, it held on for over a year I believe, so it must be resilient.
Rituals forms that relate to Earth include: Burying, drawing glyphs in soil or sand (even if you must place them in a dish first as opposed to outside) and planting.
I have very little Earth in my make-up, and while one might think it therefore does not play a large role in my life, it's quite the opposite. I find I acquire a lot of green, brown and black clothing (not much yellow though). Took me a few years to figure out why, but all are associated with Earth. Since I was a child, I've been a grain group junkie, shoveling everything with a load of carbohydrates down my throat (examples; heavy, starchy foods like pasta, breads, oatmeal, peanut butter and stews). They're actually my favorite foods (don't even get me started on my love of peanut butter) as opposed to my favorite foods being those associated with Air (my strongest element). I also tend to very much be a night owl and winter happens to be my season of preference (both of which I associate with Earth). The point? Look around, examine your life, you may find you already include a great deal of Earthy things in it unconsciously to try and correct this elemental imbalance.
Moving on...
Try acquiring some tools related to Earth and put them to casual use just to get a feel for the element. Such tools might include hammers, drums, rattles and ordinary stones such as granite.
You might also try to make a point to be awake at midnight or whenever the time is that you associate with Earth. Breathe the energy of the time in, soak it up, like soil soaks up water.
Pay attention to the part of your body ruled by Earth, which is of course the physical body, but each element governs different areas of the physical body. For Earth it could include flesh, muscles, bones, oranges and tissue. Give yourself a massage if you have to in other words, Earth is a very touchy feely element, it revels in all things physical, especially physical pleasures. More than this, the sense I allocate it to ruling is touch, so this has a double-effect.
Earth is the element of silence, it is cold and dry. Try to incorporate each of those into your life more and more for a time, see how it feels. A hour of silence each day perhaps or even days worth of it, communicate in very physical ways if need be.
More on timing, I relate it to the dark moon (often referred to as the new moon) as well as the days of Thursday and Saturday.
You might, if you care at all about chakras, work a good deal with your root chakra and Earth's stage of in our life cycle is old age, so perhaps you could reflect on what your older years would be like or spend time around those who are old, even things which are old (antiques, historical sites and so forth).
If you have any tarot decks (and not necessarily skill with it), remove all the pentacle or coin cards (ruled by Earth) as well as the Kings (with the King of Pentacles being Earth of Earth and the King of Cups being Water of Earth, for example). Study them, carry them around with you, you get the idea I'm sure.
Earth is all about results, completion. Tie up loose ends and finish up projects, take on the behavior of Earth and try it on for size like you would clothing you're tempted to buy (unless you're one of those people who just buys, buys, buys, takes it home and realizes it doesn't fit like I used to be). Speaking of which, acquire. Earth is very much involved in material posessions and in fact all things material.
Pay attention to the Sidereal Month, which denotes the Moon traveling through the various signs of the zodiac, with the signs ruled by Earth being capricorn, taurus and virgo. As with days and other times, set aside those times to involve yourself with the element in any way you see fit.
I could go on and on and on, but this is enough to get you well on your way I'm sure.

Kitchen Witchery would definately be a plus. By growing a small herb garden or veggie garden you could bring the gifts from the earth inside and making cooking/preparing them a ritual itself. Also you could find a stone, stick, feather, etc inside and and hold it, listen to it, be silent with it. This will help you become in tune with the earth

Wow, Aidron, your post was amazingly thought-provoking - very cool ways to work with Earth. Thank you for sharing that.
Cooking-- I was thinking that too. I just don't know how to make it...more magickal. Usually I just cook to make dinner and eat, not for spiritual reasons.

This is something I've been working toward myself, but I usually don't start making dinner 'til kinda late so by that time, I don't have a lot of time to really spend with the food. BUT - the best way to make your meal preparation more spiritual is to just really THINK about your actions as you're doing them. Light a candle in your kitchen as a visual reminder that what you're doing IS spiritual. All of our food ultimately comes from the Earth (ideally!), Sea or Sky. In making something for yourself to eat, keep this in the forefront of your mind. Salads are awesome for this. As you cut the lettuce, thank the lettuce plant spirit. Feel its energy (yep, lettuce DOES have energy, very nice energy at that!), give it some of your loving, grateful energy, visualize it in the ground growing, just focus all of your attention on it. Do that with each veggie you put in the salad. Red peppers are especially fun to do this with! :)
If you're cooking, you can stir whatever it is clockwise and stir an intention into the food or counter-clockwise to stir something out of the food (like if you've had an argument with someone, focus on stirring out any icky emotions you may have. Then clockwise-stir in something nice like healing or love or whatever you want to accomplish).
Just some ideas. Meal-making can be a really good time to connect!

I went to Wal-Mart and got a plant
:dancy:
I was "depressed" last night cause my mom said there were no plants that I could have in my room...and the lack of light and coldness of my room (I like it cooler) would kill it.
But when I got to the store and went right to the plants I immedietly found the perfect one!
It is called Sansevieria AKA "Mother-in-Law's-Tongue" (weird name!). It said it needed partial shade to shade. So it's perfect. When I showed my mom she was like "oh, yeah...I forgot about that one. You can't kill that one" Heh.
Now I have my first plant! (How sad, lol)
:dancy:
Here is a pic of a bigger version of mine [first pic] and my actual plant [second pic]
-- (I also redid my altar area to be Earthy. There are no diety statues or anything there, just simple things to honor and represent Earth....You can see the pics HERE (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showpost.php?p=2142459&postcount=478):) )
