Sure I believe there is a choice. I dont know why anyone would want to stay though because I also believe you can come back to visit.

I've heard that one has to accumulate a tremendous amount of some sort of energy in order to come back to visit.
I wonder why some don't bother at all...if they've left loved ones behind.
So many things I am curious about...I need to find some really good books on the topics.

Yes we do, but the questuion is:
Is the person who passed ready to make that choice or any of the choices he/she/it can now make?

My beliefs on this are:
Those who are confused about being dead or dont understand the importance of the moment, and miss the moment, have to stay.
I think it is possible that some people would choose to stay if they feel there is a dire need to watch their loved ones (and help if possible).

I believe if you have unfinished business your soul clings on to the living world so until you learn to let go you cant move on. I believe in reincarnation so no heaven or hell for me.

Define ghost -as many ghosts have passed and are just visiting
As for choice -define choice! I believe those who are stuck may not choose to be here but with a simple of change of thought could pass over
But then many living people are stuck at points in their lives and cannot move forward yet a simple change of thinking would help them no end

I have been thinking of this same thing for quite some time.
And the reason for that, is because my auntie NEVER seems to contact us, she seems to have just disappeared (in spirit world)
My auntie died 20 odd years ago, she was stabbed to death by her ex-husband. My nan died a few years later.
Now my nan, tries to make contact, you can feel her pressnece & i talk to her a lot. Also, both me & my mom have had dreams of her visiting us, and i've never even met her!
My auntie, has never made contact. Not through dreams, a medium and we have never sensed her.
I often think if she chose to leave.
Like others said, we can come back to visit. But, spirits can also be grounded to a place for certain reasons, sometimes not by choose (i believe) and they need help in being able to cross over.
I think, my auntie chose to leave this place & she likes it so much there, that she doesn't want to visit. She never did have an easy life, and from a very early age there was many instances where she was on deaths door. Maybe she just has too many bad vibes from this world now.

I believe you do. I don't think anyone is gonna force you to go to the spirit world if you're admant to remain. Some people are very adamant that there is no afterlife, no higher power, etc and actually no spirit? I wonder what happens to them.

Whew, that is (scary). I really wouldn't know what to think... I'd probably have to research it a little bit more in depth.... or come up with my own metaphysical theory that breaks through the occult information world now and forever. ;)

I think we have a choice of wither we want to go or not. Most of the time, there are ghosts out there that don't know their dead or in denial of the whole death thing. But, other than that we have a choice of how long we want to hang around here. Of course staying here takes up a lot of energy and the spirit world can be quiet nice anyway. There can be visits as well but like some body else said they take a lot of work and are quiet draining.

a bit of a yes and no. I suppose you can choose to move on, but sometimes there is things and desires so strong that you can not make any other choose but to stay. Almost like an addict, they can let go if they have the will to, but a lot of them do not even realize they have made the choice to stay addicted. I think it would be the same as sticking around in the land of the living.

I think we have that choice...but not necessarily with each lifetime. Whether or not we have "earned" that choice is determined by how we live, and how we end our lives. Likewise, when we are done learning all we need to learn, we have the choice to remain in the summerlands/heaven/eutopia/whatever or come back to another life here.

Yes, I think we have a choice to leave or come back. Why would we not?
I don't know why that is scary, it doesn't scare me at all. I think if you need to come back you will, even if at the time you don't think you need to. And if you have learned all your lessons and things they you can leave or come back and help people. It's your choice.
Here is my view of Reincarnation...sorry for the cut and paste, it's far easier than explaining it all again:
[The context of the post is over the question of repeating lives and themes]
Here is my view of afterlife and reincarnation-- from another thread:
Well in my POV we get reborn/reincarnated because our soul has to learn/overcome/understand/experience something.
If it is not understood or overcome then that lesson may be repeated.
So if in one a child was lost and the lesson was not learned (say in that life you became a drunk and killed yourself-- just an example) than you might have missed the whole point of that life and that experience and event.
It may happen in many lifes-- over and over and over-- until that is learned and overcame.
I also believe we are reincarnated with family-- that for some reason our souls are linked. The dynamics and relationships may be different-- my father might have been my daughter for example-- but we are connected. I also read that those we have stong hate and attraction to were part of ourpast lives in some form of the other.
I don't see reincarnation as a punishment, rather it is a place where we learn, grow and experience life.
When we have learned our purpose-- it could be as little as 5 lifetimes or as many as 300+-- then I believe we are released from the cycle and become part of the Source (the pure energy and light that is part of all and all are connected to).
So basically to answer you're question, like I said, it is because you have not learned the lesson and reached that goal yet.
Not sure if that exactly answers the qestion, but those are my views.

That is interesting!!!
Thanks :).
It's the one belief that I have as a constant, it's rooted in the beliefs I was taught as a child...as well as Hinduism and some others.
I was suprised when Sylvia Browne taked about the same thing basically. Heh. She's Gnostic. Maybe mine have a dash of that in there too.
But yeah, if you start reading about reincarnation and past lives you can see that there are life themes and it's either that people have to overcome, learn, experice, or right a wrong.
Like in mine, probably the most recent...I was burned. I have a thread about it where I was trying to figure it out: Fire Nightmares...and Past Life?? (http://www.mysticwicks.com/showthread.php?t=106487&highlight=fire)
I also had the theory that I was murdered or the murderer (not 1st degree, but a crime of "Passion" or self-defense-- either as a cop or civilian)... If so than that explains why, right after the nightmares stopped I have such a great urge to become a cop. I wanted to be one so bad. And at the time I was living in a bad neighborhood, stealing, skipping school, and everyone there disliked cops-- including me. But I had such a strong feeling of being one and I've even had dreams that were weird about it too. I might have chose to come back to right a wrong-- either that I did or that was done to me... maybe if I was murdered I couldn't finish the goal of that life. I can't be a cop though because my vison is nearly legally blind and such things. I'm going to be a librarian. Maybe that was what I was meant to do. How knows.
My point is I think we come back and chose to come back to overcome these things. It explains a lot actually. So I don't fear death or the afterlife.

I don't know if you have a choice. I'm just not sure. Would I want to remain here not able to be seen half the time or able to communicate? No. But what if part of me when I want could send a message? That'd be cool.

I've been wondering about this alot lately. It seems that there are so many spirits still on this side of things that I wonder how much choice we do have.
Are spirits here out of confusion, as if they were unaware they passed on or maybe were mentally retarded or mentally ill?
Out of some connection to their life whether unfinished business, a sense of guardianship to a loved one or anguish or resentment toward an early death?
Could the energy of a violent end actually hold someone here? And why??
Are some afraid of judgement whether deserved from being a rotten person or fear of judgement due to guilt from stern religious teachings?
Are some still here because they are so afraid of new experiences that they can't let go of what they do know?
I don't know how much control anyone has over it but I feel that it's of supreme importance to somehow recognize that you're dead when you die and to let go of all concerns in order to move on.
I do feel that a person makes their own afterlife. Maybe all Christians go to heaven and all Viking warriors went to Valhalla and all witches who believe in the Summerland will go there.
As far as people who don't believe in life after death are concerned, I think they are in for a surprise. But that's just me.

I believe most people reincarnate again and again, especialy if they died early or believed that they want to live again or didn't have fulfilling lives. Some people, especially those who are awakened may not need to come back again. Their souls will pass on to the next phase of almost godlike energy. In other words they may become celestials while their consciousness still thrives just as they were alive but existing in other dimensions. The ancients believed that certain noble people become stars when they die. It all depends on the person.

I don't know. I think it depends on the situation and our knowledge. I mean, is there someone or some spirit that says, "Hey now that you're dead....you can either do this...or this.." You know what I mean?

This is what I believe also. I believe if someone refuses to accept that they are dead or feel like they need to be here yet wont pass over right away. Im not sure if I would call it a choice or not.

putting aside the method of the persons death, wether they were murdered
or died in there sleep,or fully concious in a hospital bed with all there loved
ones around them.
i believe that a person may stick around for several different reasons, but
mostly those several reasons stem from two basic ones.
either they are concious of there death, and have stuck around to see how
there kids grow up to protect them.
or they arent concious of there death and there acting out the things they
did within there living life, which eventually comes to the first reason.
my personal opinion of this is that everyone when they die,are "reborn" into
the afterlife in such a way as a infant is reborn into the physical life.
at the moment of re-birth they loose there memory of there past "other" life
or it becomes fragmented,or in cases of a untimely death,or a death that
might have come suddenly and without warning, there isnt a bridge between
the two and they simply act out there physical life within there dead state.
but at the same time,a person that would have died with loving family all
around them, they're still re-born into this other life with memory lose or
fragmented memories of there physical life, and in this case its a matter of
remembering the ones around them,so that they can eventually come to the
ultimate realisation of being dead, and by this realisation they can choose to
be born again into the physical or move onwards within the more abstract
of the spiritual.
this is imo the reason why many family members within different traditions
"choose" within death to watch over those of family members.
they realise that they are familier to them, but they dont realise why there
familier to them until the realisation comes to them being dead at which
time they choose to come back or move onwards.
the same instance can be used with someone that was murdered or died by
a car accident etc.
they stick around those areas because it is those areas that they had there
last memories of,and most likely there most strongest memories of,they are
frightened and scared and they are acting out there murder because they
havnt realised that they are dead.
i personally dont believe that religion,or religious beliefs play any real part
within there death or there life after death,as there minds and memories
are fragmented, but thats not to say that they dont retain various dominent
parts of there personalities within death, only that those parts become more
amplified and those that can or have percieved ghosts walking around base
there actions and our feelings within the box of "good" or "bad".
now wether there is a heaven or hell that many religions talk and preach about
i personally dont know, but i would vote no.
i believe that each death simply brings about a new birth, and through each
new birth we have a choice to either repeat that stage again,or move onward
into the more abstract within each of the different levels according to the
lessons we have learned or the lessons we havnt learned.
salutations

I look at ghosts as being an imprint of just that one life. They have no knowledge of past lives or anything, just whoever they were in that lifetime. So the ghost of Elvis only knows himself as Elvis, but Elvis had more to him than that, his soul moved on somewhere else. Your soul is a small ball of energy with no shape or form to it. Your energy can survive in anything you've put it into throughout your life. So I guess we can all have ghosts that stay behind, leave certain energy and ideas in motion, as well as a spirit that moves on to better places. So in my perspective, we'll leave behind a physical body, a metaphysical imprint of that life, release our mind back to the universal mind, and have our soul travel back to whatever it wants to do next. As far as sending a ghost back to the Light or God, hmmmm..... I guess that imprint we leave behind changes vibration and rejoins with the universe in some way??
