this summer my marriage ended. i spent the summer staying with a friend in woodstock. there is a housing crisis in ulster county, and i had to leave last week, still unable to find a place. for now i'm staying with my dad until saturday, after that i head to the southern tier of NY state to stay with cousins. i feel fortunate that i have people to take me in, but i am longing for a real home, a place i can belong and call my own. and it seems like it is still such a long way off.
i want to go home!
wish i had one.

Sorry your going through tough times.
I was homeless for a winter many, mnay, years ago....and that was homeless as on the street!
You can look at the bright side, you are not sleeping on a sdewalk.
You'll have your own place again, someday.

I'm sorry that you're going through this... I've been through it myself. :hugz:
I have my own home now, in Ulster county; just 10 miles from Woodstock. It's not much, but if you need a place to rest a while... please PM me.

Yup. I've lived in a closet in someone else's house before and I've lived in my car. I know it sucks. :hugz:

When my parents retired and sold the house, I lived in my DH's parents basement. We had carpets of mold under the bed, it sucked. But even so, its great to know there are people who will help in times of crisis. You'll have your own place someday, if nothing else this time shows you how much your friends and family care about you.

my goal for the winter is to stay with my cousins, get my liscence (i have a car, no liscence), spruce up my resume, and consolidate my debt. then i plan to try again in the catskills in the spring - with a car, i can live further out, in greene or dutchess county, maybe, where rents are cheaper, and work and make my art connections in kingston.
i just am getting sick of all this drifting. it's not just me, i have 2 kids, and their father (my ex) can't take care of them anymore.
nag champa, i am pm'ing you soon - can't do it now cause a little girl needs my attention.

Been there, done that. Twice I moved in with friends because I had no place to stay. It sucks.
I have a nice place now because my foster mom bought a house and I rent from her, for much less than the market value. I would love to be totally self sufficient, but I am on disability and have two kids and just can't do it. I am hoping to get my butt back to school soon so I can get a job and do things totally on my own.

Avoid Dutchess; the cost of housing is outrageous... according to a recent article, the average monthly rent for a two-bedroom, one-bath unit in Dutchess County is $1,091, and rising. Many residents are being priced out of the market as people migrate north from NYC.

more expensive than ulster? day-um!
i have fantasies about the housing bubble bursting, all the rock stars and billionaries going bankrupt, the "no trespassing" signs being torn down and burned, and all the landlords and relators being fed to the bears, after an appetizer of all the people from NY who name their kids "dylan".

Yes I've been without a home before and it's horrible. About 5 years ago I was originally sharing a house with others until the landlord decided to sell up, and he hadn't told us about it until the last minute only because he wanted his rent every week. The courts let us stay there for a couple of months to look for another place, but I couldn't find anything at all. Every place I went to wanted to see my references and bank details, and seeing that I was on low income, they refused to take me in. I ended up staying at a friend's for a few months until I got sick of it. I soon contacted my grandparents and moved in with them. Then my dad got a new place and I moved in with him. I'm okay now but its so easy to end up homeless and people just dont believe this story. I hope you find something soon.

I have never been in this situation but I can imagine it's not pretty. Hugs to those of you who have been in this bad place.
