I have been wanting to learn how to knit or crochet for a reallylong time. I just got the book Knitting & Crocheting for Dummies- got a great deal. $6 for the book, two sets of knitting needles, a crochet hook and some numbered guide-y thingy.

Anyway, I was wondering if I am going to teach myself how to do this, which one is easier? Or is it better to get started with one over the other?

If anyone knows of some websites thatwould also be helpful (videos maybe) that would be great too.

I was taught to crotchet, by a few different people, then went on to learn some more.
I'm not what I would consider 'experienced', as far as lots of different patterns go, but have bought a couple of books and learned the pattern and made some really nice things.

I wanted to learn how to knit, and bought another book.
I read, and taught myself.

And of the two, {imo} knitting is easier to learn and do, than crotchet.

i like to do both...

Knitting is easier, but crocheting is faster. It depends on the sort of things you want to make really. There's no reason why you shouldn't learn to do both simulateously.

As for sites to help you learn
http://www.knittinghelp.com/ (http://www.knittinghelp.com/) has videos of both english and continental knitting (English is easier to learn)

http://www.stitchguide.com/ (http://www.stitchguide.com/) has crochet videos.

We've done tons of threads about free patterns in the past, so a search should throw them up.

To ask for help, the Knitty forum is really good http://knittyboard.com/ (http://knittyboard.com/) as is Crochet Me http://www.crochetme.com/phpBB2/ (http://www.crochetme.com/phpBB2/) both have free patterns too.

for me crocheting is easier, to much coordination needed for knitting although I can do it as well!

I learned crochet first and found it helped when learning to knit. It was much easier to pick up dropped stitches knowing crochet! :D

i learned to crochet first, and i prefer it over knitting, but thats probably because i've had more practice, so its less clumsy than knitting... i'd say do a little of both, and whichever seems better, work on first... i might have to go and get me that book though...

I've found crochet to be the easier of the two.

I can knit but never got my head around crocheting :wah: even though I really tried. Knitting is way easier imo.

well, you all are no help!
I tried the knitting a bit last night, figured out to do the two different cast offs described in the book, then got stuck on trying to actually knit. :p

The first night I tried the crochet hook, and I was able to get a small chain, albeit lumpy, going on.

Thanks for the lionks, I am hoping the videos can get me a better start. I have no -- whats it called?-- depth perception skills? You know how they test you , here is a picture of a flat cube, how will it look when it is folded... that crap. Spatial relations? So the pictures are sometimes really difficult for me to follow.

Are there any stitch 'n' bitches near you? They are knitting groups that meet up regularly to knit and chat. I'm sure someone at one of them would be willing to help with either knitting or crochet. You can find your nearest group here (it's a worldwide organisation)

A lot of yarn shops also run workshops or classes. It helps to have someone show you, although it's not impossible to learn from a book.

There's one in Swindon where we're moving next spring, but I emailed the organiser of the one in bristol where I live now and never got a reply :( Its not impossible to drive to swindon, but it's 45 minutes which is a bit much at 9pm.

They seem more popular in the US though, so maybe you'll have better luck Faery-Wings :bouncybob

what a great idea. There wasn't one in my area at all, but I could swear that I have seen something similar advertised locally.
Thanks!
