A lot of who the masons are and what they do is a mystery...becasue there is so much legend and myth behind them. the best way to ask who the Masons are is to ask a mason, or call a Masonic Lodge and find out perhaps. Although i "think" I know a little about them, I would be the first to argue that what i know is based on other people's accounts...and nothing excusivly Mason. I do know a motto is "To make good men better men." What were you interested in?

First, love your elephant avatar! Cute!
Second, Welcome to MW!
Third, the Masons. I do not know much about them, but I can get you some helpful links to read:

Who are the Masons? (http://www.grandlodgeofvirginia.org/whomason.htm)

A Page about Freemasonary (http://web.mit.edu/dryfoo/Masonry/)

Freemasonry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freemasonry)

Freemasonry symbols and their meaning (http://religion-cults.com/Secret/Freemasonry/Freemasonry.htm) <--three pages

Yahoo's Freemasonry directory with 42 other links (http://dir.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Social_Organizations/Freemasonry/) <--I recommed looking though these, there are a lot there.

List of famous Freemasons (http://www.masonicinfo.com/famous.htm) <--left side has the links to the lists

I hope that helps. The best thing to do is read those links and see if your local library has any books with them in it. Besides that I think it's pretty Hush-Hush. Good Luck.

Also, remember that this is a question like "What are Pagans" - just as there are many different pagan paths, there are plenty of different groups who would all claim part of the Masonic tradition.
